For some reason, the little "flash in the sky" special effect strikes me as the most contemptuous moment on this.

the accent too

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 10:20 (nine years ago) link

So I suppose it's up to me to try to defend it, nobody else seems keen. What I like most about it is those synth sounds - it's like they've taken that witch house drone and pulled it into a futuristic j-pop shape, but you can still hear it there, and it's sort of odd and thrilling. When the chorus kicks in and it all rushes in at once it's incredible (on decent headphones at least, it disappears completely when I listen to it through computer speakers) - it just sounds new and intense in all the right ways. The vocal reminds me of Oh My Gosh by Basement Jaxx, but with this (again J-pop) android vocal processing - it sounds human and alien, innocent and sexual all at the same time. I can see how it could be annoying, but it's like that for a reason. The idea that it's condescending seems misleading as, while it may well be non-pop people playing at being pop (1) nobody owns pop and (2) everyone I know who's connecting with it is doing so in a genuine "I love this" way rather than the ironic "pitchfork overlords" fashion patronisingly assumed above.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 16:05 (nine years ago) link

It sounds super retro to me, which isn't really a problem, but the future / nowness element is passing me by completely. It's like a pastiche of early 90s J-pop.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

One of the reasons this song is so great is because of all the haters, none of whom are remotely close to nailing it.

everything, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

This is what we call sub-Raccoon Tanuki reasoning.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 16:57 (nine years ago) link

liking a song metatextually or something, presumably if we'd kept our mouths shut there'd be nothing to enjoy

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

Well you've certainly not kept your mouth shut Lex. You've made the same "leave Britney alone" argument about how contemptuously anti-pop it is about five times over two threads on ILM and elsewhere on the internet too.

Oh God, Matresslessness - a person who's sick of people oversharing this song at parties etc. I realize the parties and the party guests that Matresslessness is talking about are entirely in his imagination but putting that aside that would otherwise be the definition of successful pop music.

mattresslessness, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

Camaraderie At Arms Length wrote a great post there that is being conspicuously ignored

imago, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

might consider a defense from someone who isn't a pop tourist

if this song is impressing you with it's synth sounds your bar must be extremely low

yes good point except her energy drink doesn't actually exist

the late great, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 18:13 (nine years ago) link

"advertising jingles for products that don't exist" is the new "soundtracks for a film that doesn't exist". Except that there's nothing new about it.

For the record, people reppin for BIPP should've seen this coming tho.

Who do you think this about other than QT?

hey hey hey, bim's on the way

rushomancy, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

no one is "shitting up" this thread; if you want a dedicated thread for only positive remarks about an artist you can make one yourself

katherine, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:46 (nine years ago) link

cool ok well you'll be seeing a lot more of me on the threads of bands you all like that I think are trash, k

imago, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:48 (nine years ago) link

it is kind of wonderful how annoyed the pop authenticity brigade have gotten tho, it's like this music has rly hit a nerve. good

imago, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

you are deeply confused.

K-pop (2014)

no posts from imago hmmm maybe somehow i can begin fathom the depths of his ignorance

mattresslessness, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

idek if 'authenticity' is really my issue but then again i have difficulty putting my finger on it

in either case even if all the pretentious cabbage were trimmed away the song would still be pretty substandard compared to others of its ilk

dyl, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:56 (nine years ago) link

i said some very very nice things abt the k-pop in the 2013 year-end ballot tbf, just never know where to start. might check some out!

imago, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:57 (nine years ago) link

was it 'pink tape'? that was awesome

imago, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 22:57 (nine years ago) link

authenticity is not my issue; my issue is contempt.

katherine, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 23:00 (nine years ago) link

lol these threads are still funny. There's a soft rule that if an artist gets their own thread outside of a rolling thread, people will be having a dumb, protracted argument inside, whereas the rolling threads are for grunts and humphs and other semi-intelligible murmurs. people won't really miss your contingency of the creative class.

song's ok pitched down, but the song's beside the point of the thread at this point. Who knew it was ironic or conceptual until ppl started 6/10ing it and making other important, not at all ephemeral contributions to music criticism?

bamcquern, Tuesday, 16 September 2014 23:28 (nine years ago) link

when did you become such a baby?

also, this song is so transparently someone's idea of a postmodern art project i can't even really get bothered by it.

Treeship, Thursday, 11 May 2017 03:03 (six years ago) link

i had no idea this was so contentious on ILM.

i don't think it is a parody of pop music or whatever lex was saying. i think it is a song that is interested in the way songs can be commodities, and how commodities -- ideally -- have a kind of effervescent unreality. but it's not really trying to take the next step and draw out a sinister dimension to this sort of alienation like vaporwave or something.

Treeship, Thursday, 11 May 2017 03:07 (six years ago) link

bipp is still fantastic this not so much
