I was totally unaware of this song until last night, when a friend posted this youtube cover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyTTX6Wlf1Y
I actually kind of enjoyed the cover, and the original and its video when I tracked them down, in the same way I enjoy most of the referents above (Jive Bunny, Mambo #5, Katy Perry, Glee songs) -- as Sarahell said, fun and catchy pop, which I thought about as long as, say, Rebecca Black, and a good deal more than, say, anything I've seen from Pomplamoose. That said, Hurting2 otm re: racial politics imo.

I mean, they should get their own spin-off group right? Like, Meghan Trainor had a number two record at the end of summer, but then those three eyeless weirdos really shook things up.

I just heard the "cleaned up" version of this on Radio Disney this morning. They replace the word booty with beauty. e.g. I'm bringing beauty back. Somehow makes the song even more ridiculous.

My wife, who didn't grow up here, loves Nicki Minaj but I recently realized had never heard Baby Got Back and didn't know the sample. Playing her the original I was reminded of how it actually seemed like kind of a radical move at the time to have a pop hit talking about a body type not represented in mainstream media, especially one more associated, allegedly, with black preferences. Somehow now it doesn't feel so radical anymore, which I guess is a good thing for the culture. But like the "plus size model" has become such a popular, pat-ourselves-on-the-back thing that it's already been parodied by the Onion, and that makes Trainor's song seem to have a lot less bite. And I really wish I had a writing/posting style that sounded less stilted when discussing songs about big butts.

Senator Mix-A-Lot Sponsors Titties-On-Glass LegislationNEWS IN BRIEF • Politics • Congress • Music • Legislation • ISSUE 38•42 • Nov 13, 2002WASHINGTON, DC—Seeking to stem a four-year decline in freaky Yolandas throwing they titties on U.S. glass, U.S. Sen. "Now listen up, Uncle Sam / I wanna see soul sistas pressin' that ham / Make me say damn / I wanna rear-end 'em / So I'm callin' a Senate referendum / Bounce by the ounce don't make no fun / I'll take 'em by the ton, son," Mix-A-Lot said.
