I've mercifully avoided All About That Bass until just now, and then I subjected myself to Dear Future Husband. In short, Meghan Trainor is now the person I hate the most in the world.

the backing track of dear future husband reminds me of jive bunny

i should have made clear i was making a connection between meghan's soca fixation and ol mr mambo, and avoided everybody smearing their shit on the walls talking about irrelevant novelties

oh god that "Dear Future Husband" thing, jesus

it's like they were trying to make a Winehouse 2.0 car-insurance-ad-ready version of a 50s/60s sockhop vibe but had only ever heard a karaoke version of "Runaround Sue"

dyl, Monday, 8 September 2014 04:52 (nine years ago) link

I actually liked the "bass" song and the video. It is fun and catchy pop, and the video didn't suffer from the cringeworthy racial issues of Lily Allen or that Miley performance.

I also like "Baby Got Back" ... dunno how much it has to do with being a woman who is "endowed," but it feels a bit creepy seeing mostly dudes being dismissive.

my main problem with this is her awful vocal affect, perfectly fine pop song otherwise.

oh come on can a man not support confidence in curves and still suggest the teen going "da booty booty da booty booty" over chintzy retro-pop may be a flash in the pan

as a pop singer, i mean. i'm sure she'll continue to get to write for rascal flatts and whoever. might even sing country too.

da croupier, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:33 (nine years ago) link

the "buyin' groceries / buy, buyin' what you need" bit from "Dear Future Husband" would be great as the pitched-down hook for a mid-00s coke-rap banger

Speaking of the inaccessible summit, here's (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:37 (nine years ago) link

the video didn't suffer from the cringeworthy racial issues of Lily Allen or that Miley performance.

I guess it says something about the racial politics of 2014 that a white girl singing "I'M ALL ABOUT DAT BASS" in an accent that to my ears sounds vaguely imitative of an inexact "black" diction doesn't involve "cringeworthy racial issues" anymore.

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

tbf she apparently learned how to pronounce booty from her mother

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

I was totally unaware of this song until last night, when a friend posted this youtube cover:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyTTX6Wlf1Y

I actually kind of enjoyed the cover, and the original and its video when I tracked them down, in the same way I enjoy most of the referents above (Jive Bunny, Mambo #5, Katy Perry, Glee songs) -- as Sarahell said, fun and catchy pop, which I thought about as long as, say, Rebecca Black, and a good deal more than, say, anything I've seen from Pomplamoose. That said, Hurting2 otm re: racial politics imo.

I mean, they should get their own spin-off group right? Like, Meghan Trainor had a number two record at the end of summer, but then those three eyeless weirdos really shook things up.

I just heard the "cleaned up" version of this on Radio Disney this morning. They replace the word booty with beauty. e.g. I'm bringing beauty back. Somehow makes the song even more ridiculous.

I feel like we've glazed over the youtoob crüt graciously embeded just upthread;

this track isn't merely a " Trinidadian soca " banger performed by her aunt, this joint is also written and produced my meghan trainor herself. however, it only has ~9000 views on youtube, hardly a hit at all!

so what gives? is it a square/rectangle type thing, where all her hits are shits, but not every shit is a hit? or is the world at large just too dumb to realize that "animal" by meghan trainor's aunt is just as much a hit as "all about that bass" or any other?

for my own part, I must concede that this is probably the first Trinidadian soca song I have ever heard in my life, and therefore must cede the judgement to someone more worldly.

counting on you ILM!

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:56 (seven years ago) link

She should call it Meghan Trainor's Greatest Shits and the cover should be a parody of that Millie Jackson album sleeve where she's sat on the pot, holding her shoe and pulling her shit face.
