J Cole is a traditionally skilled rapper and a great diary writer. His kind of middlebrow presence and softserve beats really keep him from connecting with the "cool kid" demo, which is a shame

Agree with this. I actually liked the dopey little brother who just discovered your Souls of Mischief tapes vibe of Miller's early stuff. Now he's just the umpteenth dude not rapping well over zone-out music. The new direction really doesn't fit his persona or presence well at all
