love how specific they are too (!!):"

Any metal band that cites Flux Information Sciences as an influence definitely gets my attention. That Flux record was produced by Gira for Young God records and is sadly overlooked (and quite excellent). The live show was even more crushing. Too bad only about 10 other people in Portland were there to enjoy it...

After all the Amesoeurs talk up thread - and my excitement after the EP and the stunning Alcest album - I got a chance to hear the self-titled new album and my reaction is pretty meh. All over the place; purist black metal a couple of times, one very Joy Division influenced track, a bunch of other chanteuse-y tracks that are almost a French Lush and one that appears to be trying to blend Blondie and Curve. Unlike Ruines Humaines, it sounds like different bands on different tracks; all together a little slapdash. I'll try again - I really like Neige's prior works - and I hope it gels.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 14 March 2009 22:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I think it's more cohesive than that, but yeah, you do get two or three indie-oriented tracks ("Video Girl"), and the one straight BM track sticks out a bit. Neige's guitar work and the girl's 4AD style vocals cinch it for me, though, I'm a total sucker for that stuff.

I think "La Reine Trayeuse" perfectly encapsulates what they're trying to achieve on this record...

Wow. That Static-X is just not good at all.

Mordy, Sunday, 15 March 2009 00:18 (fifteen years ago) link

what a surprise!!

i have been awaiting this new amesoeurs for what seems like forever ( 2 years anyways) and what i have heard so far has not disappointed. i just hope it does well enough that they follow it up with at least one more. although i was getting used to the idea that all i was ever gonna get from them was the ep and the split single.

drone/a/sore, Sunday, 15 March 2009 05:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i just hope it does well enough that they follow it up with at least one more.

The little coded message in the title of track 6 might indicate otherwise...

A. Begrand, Sunday, 15 March 2009 07:10 (fifteen years ago) link

in other words they already split up

SPOILER

Vulgar Display of Flowers (J3ff T.), Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

ya i had read they broke up but so had the pixies and numerous other bands. you just never know :)

drone/a/sore, Monday, 16 March 2009 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I had no idea...it was only today when I did a little searching that I learned of their almost comical girl-related squabble.

>Short version I don't think people who like Loveless should be allowed to make metal

Should be a fuckin amendment to every countries' constitution.

i, grey, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 05:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I saw Mötley Crüe at MSG last night.

unperson, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link

^
Mick Mars is 65? I knew the guy was older when Crue started, but yikes.

Anyway, as for new tunes, I'm really impressed by the new album from Hull. Hull the band, not Hull, Quebec or Hull, England. Best signing by The End since Made Out of Babies...

I don't think people who like Loveless should be allowed to make metal music.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

If people who like Loveless shouldn't be allowed to make metal, then I'm sure people who like Drastus shouldn't be allowed to make plaintive acoustic indie music.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm okay with that.

I adore Loveless, and what is this 'music' you speak of.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago) link

RIP music

Announcing: the rebirth of Music!

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I have never had much use for Kylesa, but I really like what I've heard from their new album. I get really strong Fugazi vibes from several songs, and a few times there's almost a stoney Grails vibe to some of the lead guitar work.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

...and the guy's voice doesn't annoy me like it used to.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i found their earlier stuff reasonably enjoyable, but that's a great endorsement.

gaK! blah, why'd ya have to go and mention fugazi in the same breath as a great band like kylesa.

people who like fugazi should be loveless.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

i like mbv,kylesa and fugazi.

Murderer.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Groups who are influenced by Fugazi are more enjoyable to me than Fugazi themselves. I can't handle their off-key singing any more. I'm on board with the Loveless hate, though.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

All this Loveless hatred explains why I've really been enjoying Rolling Metal Thread.

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

You Loveless haters are all nuts. Nuts, I tells ya.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Metal or 'metal' groups who are influenced by Fugazi Loveless are more enjoyable to me than Fugazi Loveless themselves itself.

Sundar, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

(xpost)

Sundar, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually, Sundar OTM, come to think of it.

Groups who are influenced by Fugazi are more enjoyable to me than Fugazi themselves

Not sure about that (don't think I have much use for either Fugazi or their disciples, in other words), but it's what I always thought about Frank Zappa -- hence, my love for MX-80 Sound, Tin Huey, the Tubes, Plastic People of the Universe, and stuff like that.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i enjoy actual frank zappa music more now than i thought i ever would. i can't imagine this ever being true of fugazi. but, honestly, i just blame that horrible 2nd vocalist dude. i can't listen to him at all. whereas ian is one of my favorite singers of all time. which just makes that band MORE painful to listen to. such a waste.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, but i AM a my bloody valentine fan. i don't need that much MBV in my metal though. a little goes a long way. and it really depends on how people use "the gaze". as i was mentioning earlier about nadja.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

CHUCK, have you heard the new Giant Brain album yet?

i started a thread on it, but nobody on ilx has heard it yet.

OMG! I Can't Stop Listening To The New GIANT BRAIN Album!

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

cuz you would dig it. i think.

scott seward, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

xp I could imagine dogs howling in pain at Ian's attempts at singing in Fugazi, too. He's a great yeller, though.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Not at all sure about the upcoming Judas Priest U.S. tour. Not only will they be performing British Steel in its entirety as part of their set, but the opening band (the only one announced so far, anyway) is Whitesnake. WTF?

unperson, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, that doesn't seem right, even though folks have been saying that the last Whitesnake album was a decent return to form. Maybe they think they'll get better attendance numbers by pandering to the summer classic rawk geezer crowd.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

They are playing smaller venues, though, which will be cool. Doing the same place in Los Angeles that Iron Maiden played on their Dance of Death tour (in fact, that was the show where Bruce fell off the riser onto the drum set). I'm totally going to this.

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Also agree with all the positive pixels spilled about the new Kylesa. They've really come a long way since boring the hell out of me opening for High on Fire in 2005.

Kickstart My Heartwork (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 18:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i just told my friend clay about that priest/whitesnake tour and he's freaking out.

it is basically as if they called him in advance to plan this.

>They are playing smaller venues, though, which will be cool.

Here in NJ they're playing the same outdoor amphitheatre they played with Testament, Motörhead and Heaven & Hell.
