yeah that was a nice conversation. seemed like there was some dark stuff underneath her first marriage, did not sound like a good scene at all

I agree - it did not sound like a happy situation.

As a side note, do you all ever listen to the Longform podcast? It's rapidly becoming a favorite of mine.

Paid $9 for yearly access to the archives, but this proprietary player sucks compared to Pocket Cast (or even the iOS podcasts app).
Listened to Mark Duplass one today - it was really good and pretty surprising because I only know him from The League.

Downloading some Longforms now, I've been having a hard time finding podcasts I like - comedians talking to comedians is boring, even the good tentpole podcasts (WTF, nerdist, etc.) rely on that too much.

I was looking forward to this Jay Bakker episode because, even though I've not been associated with the church or considered myself a Christian in over 20 years, I always did like the Bakkers. Especially Tammy Faye. Jay seems like a good guy too.

I was never on the fence about whether or not Jerry Falwell was an asshole to his core, but it was nice to have that confirmed.

Did you ever see his documentary TV series, One Punk Under God? It was pretty good.

Oh man, I forgot about that show! It was good.

and there's some good stuff where he goes to their old theme-park thing

I have REALLY enjoyed the interview with Jay Bakker. The downfall of the PTL and the other televangelists around that time, as well as the Iran-Contra scandal, are the first two eye openers I can recall, and it's way interesting to hear the stories from around that time from another, more intimate perspective. The anecdote Bakker provides about his dad being catatonic in the fetal position on the couch for several days after it all went down is particularly personal, especially given the over-coiffed nature of their ministry.

And to Maron's credit, he did the touristy thing and asked questions about some of the scandal details, but seemed to keep his questions as being about Jay's role and position during it. It's helped by his chronological approach, and he doesn't dip back in for sensational shit after the PTL goes down.

And he really seems to engage with Bakker on his current ministry and on the question of faith and the teachings of Jesus. I'm pretty impressed by this interview.

Survivalist Compound Row (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 4 September 2014 19:11 (nine years ago) link

otm

I'm only halfway through but I'm really enjoying how good and honest the interview is...but also that Maron has a sort of respectful understanding of Bakker's relationship with his parents, and that they were still his parents at the end of the day no matter how the larger public saw them...

and that Maron is genuinely interested in Bakker's faith. That's a big part of who this guy is and letting him talk honestly about it is awesome.

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 September 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

two weeks pass...

the nick stoller interview is great because maron is being a dick the whole time. the whole 'artisan bread' exchange is so funny. he should interview more people that he has some level of open disdain for.

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 22 September 2014 20:12 (nine years ago) link

I was trying to figure out why he was so weirdly aggressive during that interview. It's not like he's never interviewed Harvard types on the show before.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:17 (nine years ago) link

I kind of felt bad for Stoller, he was trying to roll with it and have fun but it felt like Maron was kind of walking all over him

Brio2, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

Some of those "Maron being a dick" interviews can be pretty funny esp if the interviewee is a bit of a dick to begin with eg. Dane Cook. I have no idea who Eric Stoller is tho.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Monday, 22 September 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

or Nick Stoller even.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 September 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link

Lol yeah him too. Maybe I was thinking of Eric Stoltz.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Monday, 22 September 2014 21:00 (nine years ago) link

seems like a perfectly nice guy but it's still a funny dynamic, like that podcast where kumail nanjiani and maron were going at it. i've been kinda bored by WTF lately so it was refreshing. tim and eric this week though, could be good.

When Nick Frost was talking today about his character on Spaced, named Mike Watt, I thought "Has Maron never interviewed Mike Watt? Maron needs to interview Mike Watt!"

Johnny Fever, Monday, 22 September 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

nick frost is on today? awesome!

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 22 September 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

Ugh that would be awful. Marc would keep interrupting him. Mike Watt needs to just do his own podcast of monologues.

I'd never heard of Dax Shepard before his interview with Maron. Seems like a complete d-bag. He should be in prison for beating down that pedestrian.

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 14:34 (nine years ago) link

Man, I don't know, I got a totally different vibe from Dax. It sounded more like he was fully aware that he was a total d-bag, but has reformed quite a bit. Seemed like a pretty genuine guy that had a pretty decent handle on how he's fucked up in the past and how he's moving forward.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 14:41 (nine years ago) link

yeah that's the feeling I got

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:30 (nine years ago) link

Also, that "pedestrian" threw a full cup of something at the windshield of the car Dax was driving. Dax might have gone overboard, but dude needed his ass beat.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i'm sure the cup throwing was completely unprovoked

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:55 (nine years ago) link

i'm not sure if you're just trolling now or what, but he gave a pretty solid rundown of the whole incident. i doubt that anything deserved a public ass-kicking, but you're trying to make it sound like Dax just randomly jumped out of his vehicle and started beating the shit out of a completely innocent bystander, which was very much not the case from the story he told. again, yes, it's a dick move for Dax to handle it the way he did, but let's not keep pretending it happened with zero context.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

xpost I saw that "Neighbors" movie Nick Stoller made, and it was such a piece of shit. There's like 10 minutes of movie, and then the rest is as if the director died and the replacement couldn't find the script and had to construct a movie out of hours of improvised takes based on the actors getting a one sentence pitch of the premise and just told "action!" You can practically picture the studio going oh crap, the movie's only 40 minutes long, what do we do now!? If I saw "Neighbors" before I interviewed Nick Stoller, I don't think I would be very respectful either.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:27 (nine years ago) link

xpost I didn't say the walker didn't throw anything at the car, but there was something about Dax that made me doubt that he wasn't giving a self-serving version of events. But maybe there wasn't a crosswalk and maybe the thrower was just a prick. But I've had experiences with aggressive cars while trying to cross a street where I'd probably have thrown a Big Gulp if I'd had one handy. Whatever, I guess you guys like him.

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 18:31 (nine years ago) link

I only really know the guy from Idiocracy, don't really care one way or the other about him. Again, not defending him beating this guy up, but I think you're downplaying how dangerous it is to throw anything at the windshield of a moving vehicle - crosswalk or not.

Now you're messing with a (President Keyes), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 18:46 (nine years ago) link

i haven't listened to the nick frost interview yet -- is it good?

and what about Kathy Griffin? is that worth a listen?

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

Griffin was an okay interview, though it made me like her even less that I already did. She definitely thinks very highly of herself.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

yeah, i guess in truth I don't care if he's nice to Nick Stoller that much - and anyone who refers to themselves making artisinal bread deserves what he gets... it's more just why the fuck are you talking to Nick Stoller, Dax Sheppard and Kathy Griffin in rapid succession? The odd odious show biz type is great - and Maron can be at his best in full-on aggressive mode: Andy Dick, Gallagher, Mencia, Carrot Top - all amazing. But these recent ones aren't anywhere near as engaging as those.
