Afaik his style is dirtbag

d40 otm re beat/hook. I really like BJ the chi kid. Q's verses on that are no good tho.

Not saying the Neptunes didn't have a good career but honestly think their first big song (Superthug) is still the best thing they did

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 25 August 2014 11:28 (nine years ago) link

the best thing Pharrell ever wrote was Teddy Riley's verse on "Rump Shaker"

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Monday, 25 August 2014 14:38 (nine years ago) link

always thought "studio" was one of the songs that really propped that album up

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 25 August 2014 14:58 (nine years ago) link

it definitely did. i shudder to imagine an 'uncompromised' album

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 00:38 (nine years ago) link

q is not a very compelling presence on basically the whole album sadly :\ like it is an okay listen overall but the radio-friendly beats on the singles are somehow more interesting than how he comes across in most of his verses

maaan disagree so much lol

I know some of their smoother shit borders on easy-listening but there's so much of that style I'd take over the chintzier sound/more rough-around-the-edges drums of their beats back then. + they got way better at straight-ahead hip-hop tracks

nova, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 04:10 (nine years ago) link

I always feel weird when "Superthug" is such a touchstone for people cause it wasn't a hit where I live and I never heard it til like the mid-2000s. First big Neptunes joint here was the Mase track and then like "Got Your Money" or something.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:08 (nine years ago) link

yeah "Got Your Money" was def. the go-to early Neptunes hit in my world

or "Shake Ya Ass"

take a few laps around the english channel and hit the showers boys

85$ for a concert ticket is infuriating. I really wanted to see him live.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 01:09 (nine years ago) link

when he played here on his spring tour tickets were $25. but there's a whole shady cottage industry of nightclubs who book a midlevel rapper to perform for 20 minutes and charge an arm and a leg.

some dude, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 01:14 (nine years ago) link

It's part of the local festival. All good if it helps the local festival alive, give a chant to emergent artists to perform and whatnot, but there is so little hip-hop going in this city (montreal) it ends up being very frustrating.

one year passes...

https://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/that-part-black-hippy-remix-1

Ab-Soul used to be an actual good rapper, I have no idea what happened. The rest of the dudes acquit themselves pretty well.

Also, Blank Face is out today.

poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 July 2016 13:33 (seven years ago) link

I have just been listening to Blank Face, not feeling a lot of it - maybe I'm just not in the mood for it. I keep waiting for habits and contradictions 2 tbh.

calzino, Friday, 8 July 2016 13:46 (seven years ago) link

"Man of the Year" is still song of the year

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link

^might be right

im liking this though, not sure i heard a standout killer jam but all m/l was pleasing

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 July 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

I had a bit of a stoned epiphany listening to Blank Face last night and have decided it is pretty dope after all.

calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:19 (seven years ago) link

It hasn't got anything to match some of the bangers off oxymoron, but it is still a fine album.

calzino, Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:20 (seven years ago) link

I'm in love with "Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 July 2016 12:25 (seven years ago) link

the tha dogg pound track bangs p good

johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 July 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link

record is good. been pretty hit and miss artist for me but this is consistent

moistest hoist (Spottie), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 00:21 (seven years ago) link

This is amazing. Agreed that Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane is something else. Love the Vince Staples and E-40 tracks too.

Even despite the inconsistency of previous albums I still loved 'em, but this one hasn't got a dud track on it and is probably his best album yet. But still my fave ever Q tracks are on habits.. and oxymoron.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:01 (seven years ago) link

I don't know those albums at all - this is my introduction. I'll definitely revisit older stuff on the strength of this though.

Oxymoron is at least half an alltime classic album, plenty on it to love.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 13:16 (seven years ago) link

John Muir is another cut off Blank Face i keep repeating.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

yep

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:31 (seven years ago) link

JoHn Muir is indeed a highlight, classic rider anthem with crisp live drums

You gotta admire the man's dedication to the capital "H" meme

poolboy skew (voodoo chili), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:51 (seven years ago) link

i don't know what i think yet, it did sound aimless as i've seen said, but strong, likely a grower

j., Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:49 (seven years ago) link

I felt like that at first, it is deffo a grower and has a lot of strength in depth.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:59 (seven years ago) link

good album imo

based stress reduction (crüt), Monday, 18 July 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

this sounds great on first listen to me

can't tell if there's anything as good as 'man of the year' or 'collard greens' but there was a huge gap between those 2 and the next best track on oxymoron, this is way more consistent

flopson, Thursday, 21 July 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

Yeah this was my feeling as well

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

Well I'd put "studio" up there but more for bj the Chicago kid

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 21 July 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

"John Muir" is a serious standout for me

I can't believe how much better than Oxymoron this is, replace THat Part with the Black Hippy remix and drop the (sadly ignorable) Miguel collab and it's even better

amazing video

bunny slopes, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:24 (seven years ago) link

um, album of the year?

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 12 November 2016 17:42 (seven years ago) link

one year passes...

I can't believe how much better than Oxymoron this is

is it possible that oxymoron is not as bad as it seemed

j., Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:26 (six years ago) link

I like all his last 3 albums, none of them are perfect but they are still totally ace.

calzino, Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:32 (six years ago) link

blank face is kinda perfect to me

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

Was just blasting out JoHn Muir and thinking: another new Schoolboy Q alb badly needed.
