tbf there were basically 20 years between EPMD and Schoolboy Q where the only rapper famous for wearing bucket hats was Tony Yayo

some dude - i'm not interesting in being fair
bucket hats are basically becoming the new trucker hat in the post-odd future/yung lean era though

Second after "Los Awesome"
― The Reverend, Friday, 22 August 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link
One of the things I think is really cool about this album is that when it reaches for an "old school west coast" sound, its model seems to be DJ Muggs rather than Dr. Dre
― The Reverend, Friday, 22 August 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link
^^^ agreed
though am I the only one who digs "Prescription/Oxymoron" now?
― Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Friday, 22 August 2014 17:34 (nine years ago) link
Never liked that one
"Studio" still horrific, how was "Los Awesome" not a single instead
― Simon H., Friday, 22 August 2014 20:14 (nine years ago) link
"Studio" somehow feels longer and slower every time I hear it. Relieved that it's finally fading from radio rotation.
― Evan R, Friday, 22 August 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link
"Studio" is a funny song, like few rappers have ever sounded more "the label needs a single, this'll work" half-assed rapping on an R&B track, his verses all end with awkward trainwrecks, but it's still kind of hot. and went #1 a few months after he practically disowned everything radio-friendly on his album and whined that he wished he never signed with a major.
― birdman junior dad (some dude), Friday, 22 August 2014 21:35 (nine years ago) link
I don't think Q sounds good on it, but I don't think he's the problem, either. Every cover or mixtape freestyle I've heard of the song has been a slog, too. Something about the beat/pacing just sucks the life out of whoever is rapping over it.
― Evan R, Friday, 22 August 2014 21:43 (nine years ago) link
I fux with "Studio". It sounds good on the radio.
― The Reverend, Saturday, 23 August 2014 02:08 (nine years ago) link
Q's always done r&b tracks tho
― The Reverend, Saturday, 23 August 2014 02:09 (nine years ago) link
it cracked me up how both of the OMG INDIE SAMPLEZ songs from Habits & Contradictions were on Pitchfork's decade-so-far lists (but not the album or anything else by Q)
― birdman junior dad (some dude), Saturday, 23 August 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link
although "Man of the Year" has an indie sample too, surprised they didn't make it a hat trick
― birdman junior dad (some dude), Saturday, 23 August 2014 02:24 (nine years ago) link
"Los Awesome" has super-tacky synths, surprised cuz I thought Pharrell was a more tasteful synth connoisseur even if he has put out some garbage in recent years
― nova, Saturday, 23 August 2014 06:26 (nine years ago) link
xxp True, I don't really understand the love for "Hands On the Wheel," not that it's bad but there are so many other "Habits" tracks that I'd rather hear.
― voodoo chili, Saturday, 23 August 2014 20:54 (nine years ago) link
genesis sample is where it's at
― sleepingbag, Saturday, 23 August 2014 22:44 (nine years ago) link
Both those P4k-bait tracks are zzzzz
― The Reverend, Sunday, 24 August 2014 03:04 (nine years ago) link
And come on it's the Neptunes, tacky synths are the point
― The Reverend, Sunday, 24 August 2014 03:05 (nine years ago) link
my favorite Neps tracks are decidedly untacky, whether in Clipse, N.E.R.D or smooth-80s forms
actually it's not a word I associate with their good or bad tracks really. I guess pre-'02 maybe but that period isn't 'em at their best imo

― ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 24 August 2014 18:26 (nine years ago) link
lol. Not that there's no earliest-era Neps beats I dig but IMO a bunch of it's just rudimentary/not as melodically-developed as their later stuff, + the drums don't knock as hard as their later minimal stuff. It makes sense to me that they had their commercial peak in 2002
― nova, Sunday, 24 August 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link
they had, like, a dozen indisputable classics before '02 though
― birdman junior dad (some dude), Sunday, 24 August 2014 19:33 (nine years ago) link
Like I said I don't think it's all bad (ODB/Jay singles, some Kelis songs come to mind) I just don't feel their sound in general then the way others do, i'm sry

yeah "Studio" makes a strong case that a year or two from now BJ The Chicago Kid will probably still be making radio hits and Q probably will not

it's really depressing to me that Rick Ross's Mastermind is the one "event" rap album this year I've dug, Schoolboy Q I wasn't a fan of but Future let nova down

Not saying the Neptunes didn't have a good career but honestly think their first big song (Superthug) is still the best thing they did
― ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 25 August 2014 11:28 (nine years ago) link
the best thing Pharrell ever wrote was Teddy Riley's verse on "Rump Shaker"

― rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 00:38 (nine years ago) link
q is not a very compelling presence on basically the whole album sadly :\ like it is an okay listen overall but the radio-friendly beats on the singles are somehow more interesting than how he comes across in most of his verses

maaan disagree so much lol
I know some of their smoother shit borders on easy-listening but there's so much of that style I'd take over the chintzier sound/more rough-around-the-edges drums of their beats back then. + they got way better at straight-ahead hip-hop tracks
― nova, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 04:10 (nine years ago) link
I always feel weird when "Superthug" is such a touchstone for people cause it wasn't a hit where I live and I never heard it til like the mid-2000s. First big Neptunes joint here was the Mase track and then like "Got Your Money" or something.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 06:08 (nine years ago) link
yeah "Got Your Money" was def. the go-to early Neptunes hit in my world
or "Shake Ya Ass"
