ah awesome. as of last night i had decided to just do away w/ using one all together. is that a bad idea? isn't the chance of something actually happening pretty infinitesimal? it also could get stolen or water dripped all over it too or lost

my workplace has a conference room we were using that had a power conditioner (surge protection/continuous power thingy) with all the a/v equipment connected to it. somehow, a nearby lightning strike fried all the hardware.

so uh, a surge protector with a good warranty is probably worth more than just a good surge protector. if some piece of equipment worth thousands of dollars did nothing...

mh, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 23:57 (nine years ago) link

Probably you should just live in a place where there's no lightning

it's time to stop using computers. bye guys.

markers, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 00:26 (nine years ago) link

and thanks for that, mh. i think i'll just go without. maybe i should switch to chromebooks and keep my feature phone forever.

markers, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 00:27 (nine years ago) link

Had a brief freelance gig working IT support at a company which had to replace all of the computers on one floor because of electrical power issues. Turned out the building contractor cheesed out on the electrical and the power attenuations were so bad that stock surge protectors were of no use. Had to use power conditioners at every desk and server plug.

Not great but substantially better than Facebook/Google iirc

Actually exactly the same as Google - 70% male, 55% white: http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2014/05/29/3442514/google-diversity-report/

This reversible USB connector is legitimately the most exciting thing Apple's done since the Mac Pro

, Sunday, 17 August 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link

ha how come no one did that before

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 August 2014 17:31 (nine years ago) link

i would imagine there's greater risk of the connector breaking that way but hey, more cable sales

great take thx

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 August 2014 19:23 (nine years ago) link

apparently these already exist!

Nhex, Sunday, 17 August 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link

A new USB standard (type C) with reversible connectors of both ends was finalized less than a week ago. Ultimately this will not only allow the plug to be inserted either way up, but make both sides of the cable have the same connector. But there will likely be a years-long transition period where existing-style connectors are used on one side so that the gazillions of existing USB jacks and devices can still be used.

It's an iJobs robot that will automatically torment your boardroom and employees

post...aftermath (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 28 August 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

maybe it's new headphones.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 28 August 2014 21:52 (nine years ago) link

it'd be neat, but nah, whatever it is has been in development for years now, longer ago than the beats deal was in the works, and they wouldn't launch headphones that aren't Beats, and they wouldn't have had time to integrate Beats product team into whatever this is, and if it were headphones, and they were gonna be good, they wouldn't have bought beats.

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:42 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:42 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:43 (nine years ago) link

kinda dubious of something that'll have voice as a primary input cause mostly u dont really want other people to know what ur doin

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:48 (nine years ago) link

feel like appletv has like 1mx more potential as a game changer than iwatch but also has major business/strategic hurdles that the watch does not the watch u can just make and thats that

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

a separate internet designed by apple in california

post...aftermath (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

the watch will prob sell ok but not nearly the levels of the phone which is something everyone needs all the time, itll do really cool things that no one really cares abt as far as tracking yr health and body

lag∞n, Thursday, 28 August 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

wouldn't be surprised w/ a wait before the iwatch comes out. the ipad and iphone both had one.

markers, Friday, 29 August 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

i don't know about the ipod. i was, like, fourteen or something.

markers, Friday, 29 August 2014 02:16 (nine years ago) link

istr ipod only had like a week, but it was probably a lot easier to keep under wraps back then because the public weren't too interested

sktsh, Friday, 29 August 2014 08:40 (nine years ago) link

what if it's not a watch
