While it makes the victory a little phyrric, I like the "congrats, someone still cares" aspect

oh yeah I think I got the motivation behind the poll, it's really interesting - just curious about how exactly it works out this way. I wonder what the hard data is on who still buys albums agewise and even regionally.

Seems insane Tom Petty's getting his first number one in 2014, but it kind of makes total sense too. Just seems like a hugely interesting lens to look at how the industry has changed.

Damn The Torpedos hit #2 and so did Mojo, with a few Top 5s in between, so its definitely a bit of a quirk this is his first #1

I haven't heard it, but I thought the consensus on the new Sabbath reunion album is that it's bad.

this poll is best act, not best album, though, right?

It is. I was just making a side observation.

i was thinking best act, but as per usual personally i don't care if you go with best act, album, haircut, whatevs. assuming i don't forget or the chart collapses entirely i'll probably revive the thread any time somebody new gets the honor

da croupier, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:10 (nine years ago) link

Best act would be Sabbath for me, best album Daft Punk.

No idea if I should vote for the former?

Moka, Thursday, 7 August 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

Oh ok best act it is.

tempted by QOTSA but feels churlish to pick them over sab

big drop-off after that for me, to some lifers where a little goes a long way

weird al being the sentimental favorite of that bunch

oddly enough, none of the artists on the Guardians of the Galaxy OST (the current #1) have ever scored a #1 album in the US, with Bowie reaching a career peak of #2 last year with The Next Day.

I can't believe Cake had #1 album in 2011, somehow I missed when it happened.
