1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers
I.Holger Czukay - Movies (FLAC)
II.Jori Hulkkonen - Different (FLAC)
III.Almamegretta - Vulgus (LAME V0)
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
Ratio is a division of downloaded data by uploaded data. The good ratio equals 1.0 and above. If you have ratio below 1.0 you risk to be banned from private trackers.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
I'm not ex-OiNK member.
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).
African American culture began to influence mainstream American music in 1800s and caused appearance of ragtime by the end of XIX-th century. African American culture caused jazz & blues in early XX-th century. In 40s - 50s African Americans developed Rock'n'Roll. And then soul in 1950s. In the 60s African Americans created R'n'B, funk. In 70s — reggae, disco, hip-hop. Techno, jungle, acid synthesized in 80s.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
1. Together through life – Bob Dylan
2. Invaders Must Die – The Prodigy
3. We Started Nothing – Ting Tings
4. Viva La Vida – Coldplay
5. Exotic Creatures of the Deep – Sparks
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
1. Protection – Massive Attack
2. Proof of Youth – The Go! Team
3. Real Gone – Tom Waits
4. Nevermind – Nirvana
5. Tender Prey – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
I don't read pitchfork.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
I would not choose Momus cause its music relaxes. Moby is great. But his music like sounds of faraway lands. Nope. Morissey is good to move on. So I choose Morrissey.
7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: Please post a picture of yourself. (HINT: do this.)

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes (FLAC)
Grizzly Bear – Horn of Plenty (FLAC)
Kings of Leon – Only By the Night (FLAC)

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
A ratio is everything that someone has uploaded weighed against everything that someone has downloaded. A ratio close to 1 is desirable as seeders are what keep trackers healthy. Low ratios are the problem with trackers like TPB, although some individuals will upload and seed files they download at least until they attain a 1:1 ratio, many will simply hit and run torrents leading to torrents with a few seeders but hundreds of times more lechers. Users with high ratios are the upside of private trackers but maintenance of a high ratio is extremely important to the survival of these private trackers.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
Not a Member

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).
African American Culture, has had a myriad of effects on Western popular music, some individuals may even go so far as to say that African American culture has touched upon every genre of music in Western popular culture. African American culture has had an effect on Western music since the foundation of America with the forced immigration of slaves from Africa. Many forms of traditional American music like blues, jazz, salsa, and rumba derive from African musical traditions. For example, the tradition of blues music came about as a result of the confluence of European instrumentation and African tribal and folk songs. African speech patterns and the use of pentatonic scales led to blues notes in jazz and blues and were adapted to these new genres of music when African-American individuals learned how to play European instruments. Rock and rhythm music has its roots in these older forms of American music, so one could say that African American culture has touched all of these forms of music. Rap also finds its roots in African American culture as centuries before the existence of hip-hop, the griots, or poets, of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically over drums and sparse instrumentation.

4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?
1. Animal Collective – My Girls
2. Grizzly Bear – Southern Point
3. Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire
4. Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal
5. Flume – Bon Iver

4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
1. Uncle Tupelo – Whisky Bottle
2. Superchunk – Slack Motherfucker
3. Teenage Fanclub – Everything Flows
4. Yo La Tengo – Did I Tell You
5. Wonderful World – Flaming Lips

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
I don’t really follow Pitchfork and their reviews of music but I’d have to say that the most unfair rating I’ve seen recently is the review of the Kings of Leon album, Only by the Night. After reading the review, it seemed that Pitchfork was attacking the band and Caleb Followill more than looking analytically at the music. They totally ignored the haunting narrative that the album establishes: the album is named after a line in an Edgar Allan Poe short story and the album follows a mystery woman from a spooky town who took Caleb’s heart and soul and the rest of the album quests to get both back. The entire album is surreal and is a great piece of art, it may not have been the greatest Kings of Leon album but it deserved much better than a 3.8 rating from Pitchfork and they certainly deserve such a scathing review.

6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
I would definitely choose Morrissey in this case. Although Moby has an extensive catalog of music to choose from, I find that his music is often bland and repetitive. I think I would go crazy if I had to listen to him for the entire time that I was stranded on a desert island. Momus is a great artist and I am a fan of Josef K but I’m not sure that I would want to listen to his unique brand of quirky pop while stranded on an island. Morrissey’s music is also extremely significant and often contains a deep message about the human condition, it would be ripe for analysis on the island. I am also just a fan of the Smiths and Morrissey’s rich voice. Huge fan of Irish Blood, English Heart.

***DingDingDingDingDingDingDingDingDing*** — looks like we've got a lucky boy in the Waffles waiting room tonight!

here's a special SUPER BONUS question for my good friend Ian:

8) Explain, in 3 sentences or more (hint: do at least 5), why it's incorrect to describe the following songs as releases:

Uncle Tupelo – Whisky Bottle
Yo La Tengo – Did I Tell You
Wonderful World – Flaming Lips

8a) Redo question 4b (hint: ummmm try and get it right this time, bro-heem ;-)

Waffles Admin (unregistered), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 03:48 (fifteen years ago) link

8b) redo question 4b while you're at it. it's even wronger than the last one, imo.

Waffles Admin (unregistered), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 03:51 (fifteen years ago) link

"redo question 4b while you're at it," I should've written. what are you waiting for?

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 06:46 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry, about the mistake, I didn't look closely enough at the previous successful posts as a guideline.

8.) The songs you described can not be described as releases because they were not independently released but were rather released as parts of albums. For example, Everything flows by Teenage Fanclub would classify as a release because it was released as a single track in 1990 and pressings were made of the track as a single. It would have been much more correct and apt to list albums as opposed to individual songs especially because the artists intended for these songs to be experienced collectively. I believe that in our electronic era, people often pick and choose individual tracks out of works to listen to but they do not consider the artists work as a whole. The artists intend to portray a particular message by grouping these tracks together and focus a lot of attention on the order that they put the music together, individual tracks on an album then are not releases.

8a.)
1. In a Priest Driven Ambulance - Flaming Lips
2. Bossanova - Pixies
3. Twin Infinitives - Royal Trux
4. Fakebook - Yo La Tengo
5. Nowhere - Ride

8b.)
1. Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective
2. Veckatamist - Grizzly Bear
3. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
4. A Kid Named Cudi - Kid Cudi - If you haven't heard this mixtape before, don't judge it on the single "Day 'N Nite" I think that song is way too overrated and other tracks on the album are much better. The album has a great narrative and my favorite track is "The Prayer." Hopefully Kanye doesn't destroy this artist..
5.Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

Sorry it took so long to reply, i didnt see the responses until now. Hopefully my answers are alright now, if I didnt answer what you were looking for... let me know...

ichow222, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link

damn "Day 'N Nite" was a total highlight for me... having said that tho, tell me why all my homies are telling me "Merriweather.." owns Fleet Foxes s/t?

WAFFLES irony/life admin (wilter), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago) link

There's no doubt that merriweather is leaps and bounds above fleet foxes s/t. Fleet foxes has managed to put a wonderful spin on traditional folk-type music and has created music that is always engaging. Pecknold's vocals are prefectly complemented by the instrumentation in the album. For example, in the track, "Your Protecter" the usage of a flute in the background only serves to add greater weight to the album. My favorite tracks on this album would have to be "Your Protecter" and "White Winter Hymnal." I have just found that although I love the album, the originality of Animal Collective's album totally blows Fleet Foxes out of the water. Animal Collective on Merrweather, has managed to create a perfect balance between their electrosynth background sounds and the poppy lyrics that Panda belts out. Animal Collective just has a completely unique sound that can not be. Although Animal Collective has mastered their unique sound in this album, i believe the relationship created between tare and panda is amazing as Panda's straightforward melodies are perefectly complemented by Tare's bridges and choruses. I also dont really miss Tare's blurting vocalizations, although it was used as a sort of punctuation, I always thought they were sort of jarring.

You also can't beat the album name. I live quite close to Merriweather Post Pavilion and I have very clear memories of going there when I was younger and I can imagine myself having quite a few similar memories to the band members.

i was the user banned above, i'm just curious as to why I was banned. If it was because for the last question, i did read a pitchfork review for reference and focused on the points that caught me when i listened to the music but I answered every single question I was asked truthfully. Honestly, the only reason that I looked at another review was because I couldn't explain why I liked Merriweather Pavilion more than i liked fleet foxes s/t, i just do. I think plain and simple that the music just sounds better and that it flows a lot better... I cant say that one album has intrinsic merits over the other one, i'm not a professional reviewer and I was just trying to join a valuable sharing community, I would definitely say that my bittorrent and seeding experience as well as my ripping experience would make me a valuable member.
