Now, see, "Baby's On Fire" is all about the solo. "St. Elmo's Fire" is all about everything - lyrics, arrangement, singing ... just gorgeous.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 July 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

I wonder how many/if any other people actually bothered to vote for any Scratch Orchestra stuff in the end.

emil.y, Friday, 11 July 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

great #1 and #2

guwop (crüt), Friday, 11 July 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

Thank you to everyone who voted! I thought there were 27 ballots, but I guess there were 28. At least there are 28 #1 votes in the spreadsheet.

Honestly, every time I see one of my kids perform horribly off-key in anything, I think of this:

This either had to be my #1 or my #30, it just seemed odd putting it anywhere else on the ballot. #30 it was.

"Baby's On Fire" is all about the solo.

For me it's all about the super-deep "bommmm" bit juxtaposed with the sneery whine. But then I'm not a big solo fan.

Voted high for both 'True Wheel' and 'St. Elmo's Fire' so I'm happy anyway.

emil.y, Friday, 11 July 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

I like the lyrics of Baby's on Fire at least as much as the solo. This kind of experience is necessary for her learning.

La Lechera, Friday, 11 July 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

emil.y, there was one other vote for Paragraph 7.

Here are the full results -- all three parts in one file, note the 3 sheets down at the bottom.

'St Elmo's Fire' is all about everything but the entrance of the solo is an all-time moment of anything ever, Fripp just saying "spit ions in the ether? Sure, easy".

Merdeyeux, Friday, 11 July 2014 19:27 (nine years ago) link

Catching up...

Forgot "Everything Merges With the Night" – forgot to include this. My second favorite vocal song on AGW after "St. Elmo's Fire." It just embodies that pic on the back sleeve with him sitting in some flat somewhere.

"On Some Faraway Beach" has always been compromised by a piano part that reminds me of Bob Seger's "Still the Same."

"Needles in the Camel's Eye" was my solitary vote from Warm Jets. he never bettered the VU-meets-glam template he set here.

"By This River" – another one that could've been my #1 but just a hair behind "...Julie With" and "Spider & I" which probably says more about my feelings for Side 2 of BaAS than anything. Also, another Roedelius solo song stretched out:

yay that's the winner I wanted.

One of my all time 5 fave gtr solos, but the whole package is brilliant.

Neil Sekada (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 July 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

"The True Wheel" inspired at least two band names: 801 and A Certain Ratio. Also, possibly, The Modern Lovers. Has to be some kind of record.

I love this Manzanera solo more than most things – this kept creeping up my ballot until it finally landed at #5.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 11 July 2014 19:42 (nine years ago) link

had i been in condition to vote I would've given the palm to either St. Elmo's or Mother Whale.

True Wheel is a deserving #2

if 'The Big Ship' isn't top ten then I'll kill all of you.

I enjoyed doing the poll! I hope everybody was ok with the lowkey no-bombast rollout. They can't all be big parties, and basically the data collection is worthwhile in and of itself, imo.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Friday, 11 July 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

I didn't vote for any Roxy. They are among my favorite bands but I just couldn't in good conscience credit Eno with their early success, esp. since he didn't write any of those songs.

Speaking of "The Big Ship," Eno pretty much owns that sort of wistful chord progression, doesn't he? Kind of his own variation on the doo wop progression. He comes back to it a lot in various projects, and explores a similar sort of ideas in "Spinning Away," or even the beginning of "Where the Streets Have No Name," say.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 July 2014 23:10 (nine years ago) link

the big ship is the one we're all on, no?

La Lechera, Friday, 11 July 2014 23:22 (nine years ago) link

Descriptive?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 July 2014 01:47 (nine years ago) link

Like I want lots of description, I dunno? Facts, local color, things of their time, correspondence, things I wouldn't otherwise know unless I read this book.

La Lechera, Saturday, 12 July 2014 01:51 (nine years ago) link

Indeed, as in "An Ending (Ascent)," too.

Jazzbo, Saturday, 12 July 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

I would like an Eno book that goes into lots of detail about studio sessions and different approaches and techniques used.

Neil Sekada (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 12 July 2014 02:29 (nine years ago) link

Best for those may be I want to say the Eric tamm book, or maybe More Dark Than Shark? Or Geeta's book, for that one album. a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff, the making of stuff, has come out in bits and spurts over the years, usually anecdotally.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 July 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, just pulled it out and the Tamm book is the most detailed about the actual process. Very technical/musicological at times.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:02 (nine years ago) link

Still, it's disappointing in terms of really saying much about his actual working methods.

For all his theorizing on Japanese gardens and such, honestly, I would be far more interested in a master class on how he processes sounds or programs his DX-7.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:17 (nine years ago) link

What's the difference?!

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 12 July 2014 03:32 (nine years ago) link

Apparently Eno and Jacques lu Cont are like the only two people in history to master programming the dx7.
