Whenever I hear this I always imagine a light bulb going on over Angelo Badalamenti's head. (re Becalmed)

Haven't been able to follow along today, but looks like a bunch of good stuff so far. Will try to catch up properly tomorrow.

Coming up is the only real logjam, three tracks with 199 points each. But # of votes broke the tie.

Mother Whale Eyeless!! A song that makes me feel good every time I hear it, which is 3x/wk. Never sick of it!!

La Lechera, Thursday, 10 July 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Briefly considered putting Mother Whale Eyeless as my #1 (it ended up in the top ten). Love the bridge with his falsetto vocal in it.

once again, i regret not voting. i just ran out of time and had a deadline for a freelance GIF project. :(

on my abandoned, barely started ballot, Discreet Music was my #1 and Mother Eye Whaleless was my #2

sad ambient trombone

Love the bridge with his falsetto vocal in it.

otm. i've remarked on it elsewhere but that bridge is my favorite eno moment, and i wish there was some song that took that brief feeling and extended it for several minutes

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 July 2014 20:43 (nine years ago) link

somehow i sense the sad ambient trombone, but i don't really hear it

I love this one so much -- another great one to sing along to. It missed my ballot somehow.

that's my #1 vote - not sure why but this song evokes nostalgia like no other. reminds me I need to check out everything else Paul Rudolph has done.

I should have mentioned upthread with the "Ladytron" result -- one vote for that specified the Old Grey Whistle Test version.

Side 2 of BaAS is my favorite thing ever but I've never liked Here He Comes at all.

Brian Eno - "No One Receiving" - from Before and After Science, 1977

http://youtu.be/77G0xF45weg - not an official video I don't think, but a cool montage of freaky clips.

I'm always happy when I'll Come Running starts but by the end of it I always find myself thinking I wish he'd stop repeating the title. Don't even think he does it that many times, but it seems to always bug me slightly for some reason.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 10 July 2014 21:16 (nine years ago) link

No One Receiving was the last song I cut from my list.

I've liked "I'll Come Running" a whole lot more since a friend pointed out that the lyric could be taken to mean: one day you'll come to visit and I'll come running to see you on your merry way again. an "I vant to be alone" song.

still I knew someone who hated it so much he'd immediately flip the album over and never get to hear innocent little follow-up track and side-closer "Another Green World". yes, I'm the one quoted in Geeta's book!

Paul, Thursday, 10 July 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

Just wanted to say that I've been listening to B&AS as a result of this thread, and while it's not quite TTMBS, it's pretty fucking great :)

"No One Receiving" my #1.

even though it was my first Eno vocal album and contains my 2 fave Eno songs ever (Here and Julie), over time I've found Before And After Science less exciting and convincing than Tiger and Another, because it's not as well-integrated as the latter and not as solid as the former.

there IS a structure to it and side 2 is one of the best Eno sides as a whole, but I feel that Energy Fools The Magician would likely be a weak to average tune on a Brand X or Weather Report album and ultimately Through Hollow Lands can't hold a candle to Harold Budd. overall a really good album by anyone else's standards, but as Eno goes a grab-bag of greats and also-rans.

Paul, Thursday, 10 July 2014 22:20 (nine years ago) link

i wish there was some song that took that brief feeling and extended it for several minutes
i think it's possible to make this happen with rather minimal effort, if and when you have the time!

also discreet music my #2

This deserves a response I am too drunk to deliver right now.

Spotify playlist for those who are al inclined. Missing a few items that aren't in their catalogue. But if anyone wants to add in placeholders from their local library, I've made it collaborative:

Somehow didn't make but ballot but I love Fripp's solo in this.

I always thought the "ready Freddy" line was a reference to "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" but that song didn't come out until 1979.

Another one that didn't make my ballot somehow. Tho I will admit that Eno's Dadaist tendencies and flat delivery at this point in his career can sometimes put me off a bit("I'll Come Running" is another victim here).

Much prefer the Van Dyke Parks-esque whimsy and flow of couplets like this:

The killer cycles, humdrum, the killer hertz/The passage of my life is measured out in shirts

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 11 July 2014 13:21 (nine years ago) link

I love the impossible to figure out Phil Collins drums in this.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 July 2014 13:42 (nine years ago) link

"Evening Star" was in the top half of my ballot. I love that style of soloing from Fripp.

I wonder who picked it as #1.... :P

15 year old me asking record shop staff to put on AGW + "Sky Saw" blasts out = :-O moment for all concerned

Jeff W, Friday, 11 July 2014 14:02 (nine years ago) link

I love how on "Sky Saw" and "Kurt's Rejoinder" the basses seem to TALK to each other; it's like eavesdropping on inanimate objects.
