Cool list!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:15 (nine years ago) link

I geeked out looking at credits to see which tracks were the most Enoised, hence my high placings for Lemon (keyboards and backing vocals) and Low side two. Can't argue with the top two.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:30 (nine years ago) link

I've been long fascinated by the making-of method behind both James' "Wah Wah" and "Zooropa:" the band and engineer in one studio, and Eno in his own, second studio, generally messing with things.

Another fave Eno studio story. Apparently one of his mixing methods is to keep some of the tracks off-kilter, bits mixed too low, or too loud, or too hot or too generally not correct, to get the right mix of wrong sounds in there. There was one track during the making of "The Joshua Tree" that Eno had mixed all screwy, so much so that when the engineer showed up he thought it was a mistake and made sure all the levels were right and proper, like a good engineer. Then Eno comes back from tea or whatever, sees what he's done, and yells at him never to mess around with his mess, basically.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:36 (nine years ago) link

That engineer must have been a noob to not know Eno's rep for experimentation by 1986.

I'll start Pt. 2 in a little while -- I'm still tabulating Tracks data and transferring it to the spreadsheet that everybody will get to look at when this is done.

Awesome stuff so far.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

Lemon was my number one and is an incredible song. I know everyone has made their mind up about U2 at this point but that song really stands out in their back catalogue as being totally unique. Shame they've never managed to get that level of greatness (or even come close) again.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 19:00 (nine years ago) link

I totally missed that we could vote for Heaps of Sheeps. I would have given that some points. Possibly my favourite Robert Wyatt song.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 19:01 (nine years ago) link

Zooropa is their best album.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 9 July 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link

And a classic Eno Onnichord song to boot. Was high on my list.

Lemon has a bit ("Driftin'/Driftin'/Driftin' from the shore") that sounds like Berlin-era Bowie.

(X-post -- was referring to "Heaps of Sheep" above)

Xpost I always thought the Omnichord was one of many things Eno shared in common with Chris Knox.

No Line on the Horizon. Besides, Surprise is mostly Simon-produced.

As a huge Eno fan, and a big Lanois fan, and a pretty big U2 fan, it never ceases to amaze me that I repeatedly forget "No Line on the Horizon" exists. I mean, it's not terrible. Just ... worthless?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 July 2014 20:42 (nine years ago) link

No Pussyfooting: by far my favorite Fripp album (have time for occasion Fripp songs of course)

I know it's a rare instance of a band being unsatisfied with the Eno treatment, even if Eno was apparently pretty hands off. I guess he took too many rough edges off? Similar to this, I suppose:

bumpin this bc i bought the only eno book available on my kindle (on some faraway beach) because i wanted to be able to highlight stuff and actually find it again
and i have some thoughts/questions

for starters, what a fortunate man he has been! stumbled into the right place at the right time in his life, allowed so much creative freedom (and all sorts of other freedoms). i'm only at the part where he starts working on the warm jets, so there are a lot of things i'm looking forward to reading about
also the writing is a little corny but whatever it was the only one available and it seemed ok

one of my favorite parts was when he went to see aguirre
the thought of young eno sitting and watching that movie makes me want to squeal

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Monday, 11 August 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

haha I downloaded that book too! But first I am reading the other one, the one by Eric Tamm, which is available as a PDF online for free with the author's blessing. I can't remember if Kindles will render PDF or not?

i should embrace technology for eno

I didn't find the writing corny at all. Good book. Alas it wasn't available on Kindle in the States.

The way Eno embraces technology, you should download it onto a DX7.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 14 August 2014 02:19 (nine years ago) link

i'm totally loving this book
i'm reading it really slowly so i'm just on the part in 1975 when he gets better from his car accident and starts working with television
today i looked up what he was doing in august of 1975 and he was finishing up the recording of AGW
does anyone know the order in which the songs were recorded for that album?
next year will be its 40th bday!
