On the indie/rock/songwriter side I've heard a lot of great tracks and good albums but none have hit me in a truly special way. My favorite albums of the year so far are much more on the ambient/instrumental side:

xelab, what's the eyvind kang like? i've only heard narrow garden and i adore it.

It is my fave Tzadik release this year and there have been some great ones. It is Kang's interpretations of tunes from Zorn's monumental Book Of Angels series and it is beautiful. If you liked The Narrow Garden no reason why you won't love this. Kang is such a great arranger he makes these fuckers sparkle, some really gorgeous stuff on here.

i will check this out post-haste in that case. Not familiar with that much of Zorn's stuff, so I hope that doesn't matter too much.

i don't think it matters. i've been curious for a while about the extent to which the book of angels releases come directly from zorn's compositions and to what extent the artists/composers on the albums can improvise/rewrite pieces. each of book of angels release tho is so different from one another that i don't think you need to have heard any others to appreciate this one (tho there are plenty of other amazing ones that are worth checking out). also iirc zorn is starting the 3rd volume in the series soon? 1. masada, 2. book of angels, 3. ?

The new Horsemeat Disco (vol. IV) compilation is excellent. Deep cut disco compilations are often pretty light on gems but this is 100% quality.

I suppose that after a while it can feel like a joyless gimmick, but I remember a while back about how many great albums have already been released this year...? Really feeling that new Dimitri From Paris mix, although the house disc is far better than the disco mix. What is the Bottin like? I loved "No Static" from a few years ago but everything I've heard since has been nowhere near as good.

Funny, I vastly prefer the disco mix - which, BTW, is great for working out, too.
