"Alphie" Allen - really?

nashwan, Thursday, 3 July 2014 22:01 (nine years ago) link

During the chaos, many old grudges were settled, sometimes under the guise of overdue justice. A man called Iron Herman took the opportunity to charge Guy of Steenvoorde with participating in the Flemish count’s murder. Guy turned immediately to a trial by combat, and in this case, both men did their own fighting.

This actual fight has more than a few echoes in the Martell-Clegane duel.

From the beginning, Guy had the better of the fight, unhorsing Herman and toying with him for awhile. Eventually Guy lost his mount as well, and the two men got down to a slugging match with their swords. The sheer exhaustion involved in such an effort quickly wore out both men, who both willingly threw away their heavy shields to devote their remaining strength to the fight itself. Eventually, Iron Herman was on the ground prostrate and seemingly finished. As Guy prepared to deliver the coup de grâce, Herman saw and took a brutal path to victory. From his place on the ground, he reached up and grabbed Guy’s testicles, held on to them tight, and then shoved Guy aside without loosening his grip. With all his "lower parts broken apart," Guy admitted defeat, an admission that saw him hanged a few hours later for his (now proven) treachery.

OK, so I had really avoided this whole thing because I never read the books, and we cut the TV cable long ago in my house; as a phenomenon it was totally passing me by. Then, as more people whose taste I trust started talking about it, I decided, "May as well give it a shot, starting with the books" and . . . man, I am ALL IN. Since the last week of July I've read A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, and just downloaded A Storm of Swords today. I also d/l'ed the first episode from iTunes to see how it translated, and was so impressed with the production and casting I went to a used place and bought Season 1 on Blu-Ray.

It's not often I come across a sci-fi or fantasy world builder who seems to have fully thought through everything before s/he even puts pen to paper, but this is definitely one of the times.

lol, oh Phil, I get what you are saying, but as you get further in, you'll quickly realize that GRRM is very far from having thought everything through.

yeah this only applies to the first 3 books unfortunately, after that it starts to unravel so proceed at yr own risk. or just watch the show which will likely do a better job with the later material using the power of hindsight

ciderpress, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 18:47 (nine years ago) link

Be aware that the show introduces a fistful of other problems, though.

first three books are a tour de force of plotting that would be hard to match. they're also Act I so imo it's way too soon to tell whether or not grrm's flailing.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 21:54 (nine years ago) link

yeah it's only been nearly 20 years - way too soon!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 21:57 (nine years ago) link

not sure how the start date's relevant? high point would have been ten years ago, low point would have been three years ago. we're in the baggy middle now and we'll find out soon enough whether it all pays off like it did in book three or goes pear shaped.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 12 August 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

OK no spoilers but for fuck's sake is Sansa ever NOT a moron?

Welcome to my spooooooky carnival! Hope I don't... blow your mind! (Phil D.), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:40 (nine years ago) link

She has been entirely moronic up to now but I sort of feel she has the potential to get the better of Machiavellian genius Littlefinger if only because LF clearly has a weakness for Stark girls.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:45 (nine years ago) link

I've always felt sympathy for Sansa because she's the character that was most invested in the fairytale idea and then had it ripped away again and again. Like a viewer who thinks "oh fantasy and knights and princesses this will be fun oh god oh god"

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

I think it's uncharitable to call her a moron, she's a child at the mercy of horrible events beyond her control. She's just not a total badass like her sister.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:06 (nine years ago) link

seems like the obvious course of sansa's arc is for her to keep being dragged along until she suddenly snaps and does something badass at a key moment using all the knowledge she's absorbed while in pseudocaptivity

ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

I read that as paedocaptivity.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLEEE (Leee), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

you're not wrong

Yeah, I guess "moron" is uncharitable, but she seems to be horrible at both practicing and reading the courtly manners she's so concerned with all the time. Like, Tyrion didn't ask for ________ any more than she did, but yeesh, girl, come on.
