^^this

makes all those "oh i took a rap acapella and put it over some indie rock band, aren't i a dickens?" seem even lamer than they already are.

Yeah, this was the first time I've ever really thought YouTube and/or "mash up" has lead to anything truly beautiful.

Remind anyone else in a weird way of Specials AKA if they made an album today instead of '84? Something about the confluence of styles/influences, but even somehow the production.

Good stuff. Posted my immediate-response thoughts a couple weeks ago here.

Should release the "Just a Lady" track as a single. . .

the videos are great but if you handed me a cd of this stuff I'm pretty sure I'd think it was kinda boring

it's all about watching the vid / knowing how it was made

DMR, i disagree; i've been listening to these tracks as mp3s for about two weeks now and still loving it.

WOOKIE JOHNSON (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 21 March 2009 18:12 (4 years ago) Permalink

forks where can you get them as MP3s?

though i could see it losing something w.o the video editing, which is really sweet.

i find these all very moving, dunno if i would if they were 'real' but who cares!

Yeah--I disagree too. I mean, the editing/searching/technique/gimmick is cool for the first track or two, but I found that by the third track or so I was just enjoying them as music, which is what made me want to blog about them. In fact, I'd buy them as a CD if such were available.

populist commie in me loves the fact that these have no real financial value to anyone! Just music and love and craft.

WOOKIE JOHNSON (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 21 March 2009 18:50 (4 years ago) Permalink

True, they feel very much "of and by and for the people"--first time YouTube has felt that way to me, as opposed to just being a grotesque of vanity and narcissism.

Soundslike, Saturday, 21 March 2009 18:56 (4 years ago) Permalink

"no real financial value to anyone" excluding google o'course

impressive

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Saturday, 21 March 2009 20:01 (4 years ago) Permalink

like these a lot

the first person I remember cutting up video of musicians playing and making them into stuttering drum kits was Emergency Broadcast Network in the early 90's, but at the time (early 90's) their source material was mostly limited to geeky VHS instructional tapes of studio musicians sharing their tricks. so while visually the aesthetic is identical to EBN's videotapes from 15 years ago, youtube epxanding the source material into living rooms the world over takes this idea to whole new level

I hope Drew's Soft Pink Tube project isn't just lost, he got busy with other things I know but I love those (music-only) tracks

Fabulous. Vocalist sounds a lot like Erykah Badu.

Also has a Cinematic Orchestra mood, thanks in part to the modal sax.

His technique in arranging/composing this is very impressive. And the sourcing is incredible. The sax solo video has only 257 views. I'd love to see some sketches or interim versions (must start with the vocal and the chord change and build out from there).

This would go over beautifully even out of context, as a cosmic-soul-jazz-dance record or an Erykah Badu album track, etc. Given the process, that's just incredible.
