Oh come on now, are those two games so different as to have required separate noms/votes?
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:08 (sixteen years ago) link
I wish KD and We <3 Katamari had been reduced to a single nom. Should be way higher than this.

Not getting into this argument, but American sports are based around the draft system, which seems to me to be the only currently existing example of full-scale Marxism in the Western world. Football, on the other hand, is straight-up capitalism: the team who has the richest Russian oil magnate/Italian media mogul/faceless Saudi investment group bankrolling it wins the most trophies.

ha i like this! someone write a paper stat. btw you left out salary caps and revenue sharing which make american sports even more communistic. (tho baseball doesnt have a salary cap)
― jhøshea, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:09 (sixteen years ago) link
I was going to say the same thing as Dom about UK football - particularly the 'false consciousness' that there is some meritocratic system in it. I don't know shit about that foreign football.

why are sensible soccer etc condensed into one nom and these others split up?
― DG, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link
Arbitary decision to make sports games series and non-sports games not.

When we do this again in a few decades, I vote for things can only be condensed if they are self-evidently the same game AND the same engine. So Katamari is one entry, but the various sports series or King's Quest or whatever aren't.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link
when we do this again zelda and metriod should be in the top 10
― jhøshea, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link
When we do this again the top 20 should just be C64 games with digitized speech.
― Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago) link
Super Metroid and Link To The Past still have their shots. I would argue that both games are basically the NES games, but with better grahpics and a lot more depth.

haha buy speed.
What kind of game is this? I'm imagining you are managing some kind of team of "speedball" players? Futuristic arena sport? What do you do?

Dom do you have these in an xls for doing plots of rank vs year etc
SB2 was good game apart from the megadrive version had some weird bugs
― DG, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:35 (sixteen years ago) link
It's basically Rollerball: The Game. Endlessly captivating, probably the first game it was ever fun to play through an entire league season of. Lots of wacky power ups and opportunities for bank shots, bonus points for crippling opponents.
xxxxp

glad my nomination made it, didn't think it would
best Bitmap Bros game easily - they pretty much dined out on this as all their other games were meh at best. always intricate graphics and excellent music...but only with SB2 did they get the gameplay bang on imo (nb never played anything they did after Magic Pockets)

Like, what was the lowest "highest position"?
So far #13 for Maniac Mansion and Wolfenstein.
Ok, I'm going to complain about the rank of the original Legend of Zelda.
I limited myself to one vote per series and had to give it to Link to the Past but... yeah, seriously.

did any British games really work it over in the American market? i'm thinking Lemmings will be the highest ranking here
― blueski, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:39 (sixteen years ago) link
I have _no_ idea why Speedball wasn't big in the US... wasn't M.U.D.S. popular over there? Similar game, except more fantasy than sci-fi obv.

Most overrated game of the 90s? That screenshot says it all - four hideous deformed freaks in a completely undifferentiated space. My friend Matt and I played this a couple years ago, and every deathmatch ended with us running out of time before we even found each other to try and shoot it out. Like, "OK, I'm gonna stand still in this room. You come here and shoot me." "Fuck, how do I get over there?" This game sucks.

really all about getting 4-5 players in on it. completing the game in 1 player mode was great fun too tho - and the Amiga version played a really great italo-ish tune at the end over star warsy credits
