"It's time to make a parking lot — put a flag in the ground and call it the United States of the Middle East."

A friend of mine had some Israeli co-workers who when asked about the goings-on in the Middle East said the exact same thing about "turning it into a parking lot."

That said, I'm really sensitive to the ILX witch-hunting when it comes to 'racism' around here.

I've always thought that witch-hunting is a term best used when talking about ppl accusing and condemning others for stuff that they haven't actually done/views they don't actually have, as opposed to accusing and condemning ppl based on actions that they have taken and views that they have endorsed.

But which one resonates with more evil in our current political climate? Which ideology is more dangerous right now? Communism or plain old American bigotry?

Roger, are you a time traveller?

Phils on something lately. hes been throwing up on stage and nodding off during interviews.

he's been an on-and-off junkie for along time i think.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:43 (nineteen years ago) link

He technically 'died' for a few minutes when he overdosed didn't he?

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

One of my editors interviewed him when Ozzfest hit Ohio; he said there was a roadie sitting next to Anselmo for the whole interview whose job seemed to be to literally kick Phil awake when he nodded off. So he may well be back on the smack.

A Lethal Dose Of American Hatred is a very good album. So's Ted Nugent's Craveman. I listen to both all the time. And when I saw Nugent at Irving Plaza in January 2001, I wished he'd shut the fuck up between songs, too.

Look, as much as I love Pantera's second album, Phil Anselmo -- and his former bandmates would invariably agree with me -- is, was, and always will be an utter fucking moron. To stick a microhphone in his gob and ask him to sound off on current events confirms as much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 23:25 (nineteen years ago) link

agreed. But that should go for all musicians / actors who feel the need to sound off.

Has anyone here actually heard any of Pantera's old indie hair-metal stuff? I bet it's pretty fuckin funny, considering...

1983 - Metal Magic
1984 - Projects In the Jungle
1985 - I Am The Night
1988 - Power Metal (Phil Anselmos 1st)
All 4 hair metal albums on 'Metal Magic' Records.

Haven't heard any of them, but I expect it's like the indie White Zombie albums. they will be all over soulseek.

Rock bastard, Sunday, 8 August 2004 00:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"I Am The Night" - what a great title, a real 80's title

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 8 August 2004 00:16 (nineteen years ago) link

If you look on AMG you can see the album covers. THATS REAL 80's STUFF!

Rock bastard, Sunday, 8 August 2004 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know the new way to post pics. Could someone please post the 4 album covers for me? They really are worth showing.

b-b-b-b-but Roger YOU ARE A MUSICIAN!!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:15 (nineteen years ago) link

ah, but I'm a vigilante first.

No, seriously - if I was making a living in the way that, say, Alec Baldwin was making a living, I'd shut the fuck up on the subject of politics, because I'd fear the imminent (and justified) resentment from normal folks. It isn't like there aren't any celebrities who know to not make asses of themselves - Harrison Ford comes to mind as an example I wish others would follow.

I'm disenfranchised, that's all. And I'm not performing in front of a million screaming fans nor am I lobbying for anything or trying to get people to sign petitions.

Hey...waitaminute...are you trying to say I "sound off" too much, assfuck? :)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I think those covers are amazing in their crudeness. The Projects In The Jungle cover looks like it could be Fela Kuti: The Metal Years.

But Metal Magic is a work comparable to the best of Vermeer.

That's Dave Vermeer, kebab chef from Hilversum.

x-post - Rock Bastard, thank you, that is the funniest site I've seen in a long time. check out their pages for Rage Against the Machine and Weezer (Rivers Cuomo was in a hair metal band called "Avant Garde"????)

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:39 (nineteen years ago) link

We need Ian Christe back here to talk about all this. Rivers was and ALWAYS is a hair metal cockfarmer, his 'genius' was finding a different way to channel it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:41 (nineteen years ago) link

My pleasure, joseph. Thank Ned for giving the link to ILM sometime last year.

Have you seen the Ronnie James Dio one yet? Or Fred 'vanilla ice' Durst?

Rock Bastard, Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:42 (nineteen years ago) link

cheers Ned. I just think "Avant Garde" as a band name is atrocious. However Tom Morello's drama club photo is pure gold.

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Very much gold. And yes, it's a lovely site -- there's some (I think extremely OTM) worry that Metal Sludge has this week changed for the worse, but as an archive site for the past six years at least, it will always be brilliant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 02:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh my days! I always knew he was a racist tosspot, but this article just goes to show what a fucking hateful bastard he can be. Plus the only good thing he ever did was that cover of "Gloves of Metal" with Anal Cunt. Otherwise he never did a decent bit of metal in his life. And he's a fucking cuntarse.

catgreek (dog latin), Sunday, 8 August 2004 02:10 (nineteen years ago) link

haha Roger, I getcha, was just baiting. I don't agree w/ your stance re: celebrities mouthing off, but have read your take on it in other discussions, and don't really think I can change your mind on it or anything...but, y'know, does wanting celebs to be apolitical *really* necessitate dumping every single one of them that isn't into the same category? Is obnoxiously screaming "vote democrat!" or "vote republican!" or whatever really comparable to mouthing "white power"? Is there REALLY no difference between Stevie Wonder lobbying to make MLK's birthday a national holiday, or the Dismemberment Plan dude voicing his opinions on the war on Iraq, and "I mean, if you know the facts about the al Qaeda, they come across like a bunch of paranoid homosexual fucking Arabs, whatever the hell they are"?

track 1 of Metal Magic is titled....(wait for it)....Ride My Rocket

LYRICS:
in this day and time of metal magic
we need rock and roll
we need PANTERA!
I didn't wanna touch you
since we were both sixteen
didn't wanna take you down
and show you what love means
now is the time
this is the place
get ready to take a chance
we don't have a minute to waste
ride my rocket
wear me out
ride my rocket
make me twist and shout
ride my rocket
give me all of your love
ride my rocket
I just can't get enough.

You leave me breathless
when you walk by
the way you move it girl
makes you satisfy
You might be the best
that i've ever had
it's gotta be good girl
cuz it looks so bad

ride my rocket
wear me out
ride my rocket
make me twist and shout
ride my rocket
give me all of your love
ride my rocket
I just can't get enough.

*guitar solo*

feels so good
makes my heart break
every time you touch me
i explode into flames

ride my rocket
wear me out
ride my rocket
make me twist and shout
ride my rocket
give me all of your love
ride my rocket
I just can't get enough.

Actually, they're tough to find, but Celtic Frost's brief "glam" period (circa Cold Lake) boasts photos a thousand times as tragic.

Queensryche in their spandex and make-up daze were pretty silly looking. I also remember Discharge putting on metal gear. That didn't look so hot either.

I think really where the use of the rebel flag or Confederate flag with us really came from was from our love of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and whatnot — shit like that, you know. There was never a time when it was okay to promote hate without a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek. It was never this blatant thing, unless I was completely out of my mind, which I was at points in time. I’ll own that for damn sure, but that was a long ass-time ago.

I’m coming up on 47 years old, and I think that if it’s upsetting enough to people in general — this is tough to say without taking any side — I can see where if people see it as a symbol of hate these days. I wouldn’t want anything to fucking do with it. I wouldn’t want much to fucking do with it at all. You see a Confederate flag out there that says “Heritage, not hate.” I’m not so sure I’m buying into that, you know?…

In hindsight, you know what, I would have not used it.
