I'm sure all the people screaming in "A Hard Day's Night" wouldn't have said anything smarter. So I suppose they were wrong too.

Phil Collins was in there, so by definition, yes, they were.

hey! I just wrote a review of the new AFI album for Blender where I said the exact same thing about the sadly generic Davey Havok. So I guess me and Alex agree on something (unsurprisingly it was about music and not fashion or categorization).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 February 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also, AFI has surgically removed everything Danzig-esque about them. They're strictly ATDI-Refused prog-punkers now.

Well, there wasn't much of a precedent for the Beatles. Good Charlotte is about the, oh, 2,815th punk band to traipse down the pike since Johnny Rotten told off Winterland.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you read those user comments, you see a lot of people saying they never liked punk but they like Good Charlotte. If you pretend those 2,814 other punk bands were Chuck Berry et al and Good Charlotte's the first punk group to incorporate Power Ballads effectively the comparison makes a lot more sense.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

point remains that screaming teens doesn't necessarily negate artistic quality either way.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, but it's FUNNY!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Well, at least teen hyperbole is. Then again, I'm bitter in my "old" age.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

(there's a lot of that going around, it seems)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I also loathe how the lead twin (Joel, I believe) insists on gesticulating ala gangsta rap from the late nineties. It seems to be impossible for him to sing a verse without waving his arms about as if he were Dr.Dre. This irritates me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I guess you'd prefer he bugged out his eyes, made a fist and marched in place right? That's what bugged me about Killing Joke when I saw them play live on 120 Minutes around '95-'96. Good thing I could listen to the music, and you know, judge them on something other than their fashion and choreography.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Though to be honest, those badass photos of KJ you put have made me more curious about their music despite the fact that on the one album of theirs I own, the first, every song sounds the same. So sometimes (or at least some band's fans) are right to judge music by everything but the songs.

But I'm just playin', dawg. *gesticulates a la Fred Durst*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

i have a feeling id hate GC even more if i were 15 and had to go to school with their fans everyday.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

"despite the fact that on the one album of theirs I own, the first, every song sounds the same"

...if you've got ears full of spooge, yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

"I guess you'd prefer he bugged out his eyes, made a fist and marched in place right?" ...well, it'd be nice if we didn't feel he was OBLIGED to do ANYTHING. He's just singing, right? I do some dopey things when I'm singing, too, but at least I'm aware that I'm repeating myself, and I try to stop. Because I don't want to look fake or stupid.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 17 February 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jaz Coleman may indeed look loony sometimes while in the throes of performance, but I guarantee you, the psychosis is perfectly -- and worryingly -- genuine. He completely loses himself.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Suddenly Good Charlotte seem oddly attractive.

I don't know if "Anthem"'s chorus is really lifted from Jay-Z but otherwise I'm really getting into this song. What's the riff stolen from that leads into the chorus? Baaah bop ba ba ba duh da. That one. Its really bugging me.

Also "Out of step while they all get in line / I'm just a minor threat, so pay no mind" is a great lyric but otherwise I'm really waiting for it to break into Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle".

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 27 April 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jay-Z said: "That's the anthem get'cha damn hands up...Not guilty ya'll got-ta feel me"

Good Charlotte said: "This is the anthem, throw all your hands up, y'all got to feel me, sing if you're with me"

I wonder how Ian MacKaye feels when he hears the "Out Of Step...Minor THreat" line.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was looking at the Good Charlotte Rolling Stone cover and the only word that popped into mind was "asshats".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

wait, do you want to stick their heads in YOUR ass or do you want to stick your head in THEIRS?

I don't want to hear this bullshit from a Phil Collins fan (the man looks like a penis possessed by a demon).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

this kitten has claws...grrr.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dude, PAY ATTENTION: I have stated over and over that I detest Phil Collins BUT I really like some Genesis songs. You can say whatever you want about Phil Collins!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

heee heee heee. I was just being snarky. That everyone is determined to point out how ugly my boyz are reaffirm that the music is getting to you all. Submit! They are the young and YOU ARE THE HOPELESS! bwa ha ha ha haaaa!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

But it wasn't an "Oh, they're ugly" thing; I just looked at them and thought to myself, "Hmmm, asshats." There wasn't even any rancor!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

and the day I write a grammatically correct post will be the day that I will RULE YOU ALL!!! Bow down before me, son of Jor-El! Bow down!!!

You make me laugh, Dang Perry...I will rule you last!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh and that red polka-dot die job Benj repeatedly gets is QUITE asshat, I'll admit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wonder how Ian MacKaye feels when he hears the "Out Of Step...Minor Threat" line.

I'm sure that, like me, he's struck by the urge to eat his own vomit and go on an all-twin killing spree.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

the music is getting to you all

Nah, more like the dull itch that you scratch by moving lazily against a couch rather than bothering to use your hand or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Anthony, you're making me actively dislike Good Charlotte instead of just mostly ignore them like I did previously--I dunnae think this is what you intended??

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Joel and Benji should be punched repeatedly in their respective necks.

so he tells his mom he loves her, takes give you respect for trying so hard to justify liking shitty musicthat Rich and Famous or whatever song how the lead twin (Joel, I believe) insists on gesticulating ala gangsta throwdown!
-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), January 20th, 2003.
the way he turns into Eddie Vedder during the bridge
repeatedly in their respective necks. Is that a Battle Royal pic??

how the lead twin (Joel, I believe) insists on gesticulating ala gangsta throwdo, Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

right -- the line isn't exactly like jay-z, so maybe i think its roughly inspired by at best. the meter is totally difft, for one.

but really WHAT'S THE RIFF?

this is bugging me so much.

Also, anthony how do you think it compares to Blink's Anthem Pt. II?

the music yeah blah whatever but PLEASE STOP HUNCHING YOUR SHOULDERS AND BENDING YOUR ARMS AND MAKING HAND SIGNS IN YOUR VIDEOS. PRETTY PLEASE. SIGNED, AMATEURIST

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

I must say, the hand signs do really piss me off for some reason. As do the 'male cheerleader' spinning guitarist moves. And the choreographed synchronized jumps. And the fact that they're twins. And the fact that they're alive.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:20 (twenty years ago) link

punks are SUPPOSED to piss off old conservative fogeys, remember?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:28 (twenty years ago) link

WHY ARE THERE TWO GUITAR PLAYERS IF THEYRE BOTH GUNA PLAY THE SAME THING.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:57 (twenty years ago) link

ROCK, AND ROLL.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

because the other twin needs something to do?

the non-benjijoelunit guitar player is amazingly pretty tho, almost enough so for me to sit through that new video where the ugly twin (oh wait) (fnar fnar) tries to be missy elliot

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Friday, 1 August 2003 16:02 (twenty years ago) link

hopefully their reference to MBV will cause hordes of 13 year-olds to flock to their local record shops and buy Loveless, so Kevin Shields can have even more equipment to screw around with but still never actually do anything.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 1 August 2003 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

when I found out that
they are into PETA stuff
I lost all my hate

still don't think they're much
of a much of a miccio,
but no more hate

Haikunym, Friday, 1 August 2003 16:38 (twenty years ago) link

I always wondered why Chris Rock didn't call them on the swipe rather than say "Good Charlotte? more like mediocre Green Day!" when they performed on one of his VMAs. I'm guessing he never noticed the McDonalds line.
