everyone who's bought a dave matthews cd today has sported this look

...has been the most compelling case made by any member of the anti-flipsquad brigade so far.

However, I can't really wear a t-shirt by itself, it feels strange to me to be collar-less.

holy shit, me too!

also, pink rules.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:34 (eighteen years ago) link

It takes real panache to pull off the big-red-circle-with-a-slash-through-it look.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

hey i do this and im not gay nor in a frat.

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

British fashion is backwards though.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:38 (eighteen years ago) link

E.g., dudes wear skirts, young people wear sock-garters, etc.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

hey i do this and im not gay nor in a frat.

But you DO use the word "nor" correctly! STONE HIM!

The Ghost of Haha Sigh (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

my least favorite fashion look is the ugly, long-sleeved patterned shirt w/faded jeans look. usually worn by beefy bros who are out nightclubbing in hollywood

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:43 (eighteen years ago) link

tough to pull this off with real polo/lacoste shirts cuz the collars are floppy and don't stay up, i can respect that

bros-post

jones (actual), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

this has nothing to do with old men and gay guys. i love old men and gay guys.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't like polo shirts, they are kinda high school.

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:05 (eighteen years ago) link

in britain this means two things to me: "chavs" ie kids hanging out with trackie bottoms and ellesse polos, or coversely, upper midle class hooray kids who go sailing etc. and play rugby. leeds uni is stuffed full of them. (and they all say "uni" ulp)

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Tough to pull this off with real Lacoste shirts because they inexplicably cost $80.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:16 (eighteen years ago) link

there was a guy charging $100 cdn for them at the big street sale here last summer, and he only had two on display – if you wanted a different size or colour he had a runner who would go and fetch them from an undisclosed location. sketchy!! and they were selling like hotcakes anyway.

jones (actual), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Lacoste of living.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

real lacostes are $90 apiece in canada. i don't think i've even seen a more bootlegged brand of clothing.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Flipping the collar up just seems strange. (I wear shirts with collars about, oh, ten times a year maybe.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:55 (eighteen years ago) link

i almost bought lacoste shoes the other day.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:57 (eighteen years ago) link

im surprised it's taken ilx this long to complain about this. it's been annoying me for at least a year now.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

penguin shirts = teh best

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

i want some lecoq shoes so bad

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a Penguin shirt that Sarah got me a year or so ago for my birthday or something, and I wore to see my friends' band the other night, and I was talking to her and her coworker, and I was saying that I wouldn't normally buy a Penguin shirt for myself because I have trouble spending money on clothes and the coworker blurts out "...AND BECAUSE THEY COST $70!" I was like "I don't think it cost $70" but he said "THEY COST $70." Penguin shirts don't cost $70, do they? It's just like a short-sleeved polo shirt. What an ass.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:20 (eighteen years ago) link

eyes on the cost

ralph lifschsitz, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:21 (eighteen years ago) link

ditto on the penguin shirts, i have way too many.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't even know this place anymore

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

hahahaha old navy.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

some of us do not attempt to dress beyond our station

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:38 (eighteen years ago) link

In order to dress beyond my station, I'd have to wear ermine-lined cloaks and carry around a royal sceptre (and I do not mean my cock for a change).

The Ghost of Big Pulsating Ego (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:39 (eighteen years ago) link

my dad has penguin shirts, so no way do they cost 70

Ermine-lined cocksocks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i wear shirts from the thrift store. old navy's too pricey for my blood.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

(Actually an ermine-lined cocksock sounds nice.)

The Ghost of Warm AND Luxurious! (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

no thriftstore has capri pants of this quality

strng hlkgntn, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:51 (eighteen years ago) link

i think this can look pretty good.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

actually, thrift stores are great places to find Izod shirts. Those things don't wear out.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

this is like an epidemic around my neighborhood, I'm seeing it everywhere. and not just w/ preppies, but lame-o-indies too...all sorts of uncouth hipsters. it's terrible.

Vichitravirya XI (steph jam), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd love to see the pro-flip "appropriating the working class" arguments now.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

the best is seeing the underside of the collar have a deep clean color and the rest of the shirt is all faded. way to paw thru the racks, dude.

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway, i might turn up the collar on my jean jacket, but never a shirt. i mean, jesus.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:31 (eighteen years ago) link

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHA!

It's not exactly back to the days of poodle skirts, penny loafers and varsity jackets. Rather, the retro look is freshened with a touch of hip-hop.
