That's Spalax, isn't it? (Dotcomming Spalax gets their official site; this is a link to Forced Exposure's online store page.)

Wasn't there a Harmonium-related release from Rykodisc in recent years?

it was really layered guitar sounding...very ambient, but I don't know what the albums are

Sounds like either Zuckerzeit or Sowiesoso. Actually, Zuckerzeit was also produced by Michael Rother, and I think it sounds very similar to the first Harmonia album.

Re: Kluster. First two records are trying at best (though I think the worst I could pan them is as "Stockhausen lite"), but "Eruption" is pretty scary. This was originally just a Conrad Schnitzler solo record, but is now credited to Kluster as all three play on it.

Yes, it's Harmonia 76, which is them + Brian Eno.

Harmonium (as Dave typoed) are also nice, if you're partial to mid-seventies French-language folky stuff. I find Harmonium likeable in the same way I enjoy some of Daevid Allen's solo stuff from the same period...

Damm here I was thinking this was a Rheostatics thread and wondering just what would happen if Dr Drumstien was to lose his touch.

Harmolio were also very good in their time ('78 / '79) v.difficult to get a hold of though. michael rother with the cluster boys and jamaladeen tacuma of ornette coleman's prime time band of that period just recorded one jam sesion in paris nobody seems to be aware of ?/!

What about Hormonia (Lemmy's side project with Rod Stewart)?

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 11:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

or michael rother's other side-project HARMA PAM where he just sings songs about MEAT

pardon me for digging this up...

"geeg" you should also look for "deluxe" by harmonia, it's just as great as "musik von" but has a touch more epic-ness and cohesion to it. and honestly it's perfect driving music

and look for grosses wasser and zuckerzeit by cluster, soweisoso is ok

and while I'm making suggestions, la dusseldorf's first three albums - la dusseldorf, viva, and individuellos - are all classics. if harmonia did the soundtrack to the 1980 olympics. cheeky and fucking brilliant

I've been enjoying the recent Water reissue of Michael Rother's Flammende Herzen (I can't tell from the liner notes if Sky released it in 1976 or 1977) and Sterntaler (1978). I looked at their site to see what else they've done lately and it hasn't been updated in a couple years, oddly.

I also noticed that Cluster's Zuckerzeit and both Harmonia albums were reissued on Revisited last summer. Does anyone know how the remasters compare to the German imports from the early 90s?

Musik Von Harmonia is one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time. It's perfect, to me (although 'Ohrwurm' is rather tedious).

I listened to some Deluxe on youtube, and the other albums, and didn't really care for them at all. I didn't care for Cluster, either.

I think that when it comes to Kosmische stuff, there's a point in the 70s where it all starts to sound a bit too crisp and too predictable, and then it starts to sound like New Age music.

Other tracks that might appeal to fans of this album: Phaedra, from Tangerine Dreams' Phaedra album, and Sunrise in the Third System, from TD's Alpha Centuri album. Neither are beat-driven, but they have a similar soundscape.

This Library album might also be of interest to you:

I think part of what I find appealing about these tracks are the lo-fi/hauntological aspect. It's electronic, but it sounds like they're using mic'ed amps and spring reverbs, so they have a very 70s Sci-fi weirdness to them. If anyone had other recommendations in this vein, I would be interested in hearing suggestions.

You know what, on second liste, that Roger Davy record isn't much lik Musik Von Harmonia, at all.

I've been finding the No UFO's release on public information = mind controls the flood, has some very Harmonia sequences.

I'm starting to warm up to Cluster. Zuckerzeit still sounds to me like 'Musik Von', but incomplete. I tried going back through old Tangerine Dream and found most of it pretty drawn out and tedious, but I would love to find more stuff in the vein of Musik Von Harmonia. Was anyone else using rhythm boxes this far back? I guess Kraftwerk was.

I should explore more Eno. I think my main criticism of Eno stuff is that it's usually in the Ionian mode, just straightforward, typical western scales. It sounds like his Ionian style dominates the Eno/Harmonia and Eno/Cluster stuff too.

'On the Run' by Pink Floyd just came to mind as being Harmonia/Cluster-esque.

Cluster '71 and Cluster II are highlights in my book. I enjoy Zuckerzeit's pop aesthetic, but always find myself drawn to the way-more spaced-out, alien textures of '71 and II.
