I enjoy ...Plays the Blues (the 1994 comp album), but it's the only Shuggie album i know. I'd suspect all his stuff is worth a look.

get "freedom flight", i think about half of which is on the cd reissue of "inspirtation information"... it has "Strawberry letter", the soaring title track, and some bluesier numbers.
i bought a repress of "inspiration" on vinyl about a year ago and it sounds like absolute shit. beware of cheap soul/r&b vinyl reissues. the don blackman reissue i got sounds just as bad.

Shuggie only had three albums under his own name in the first place. I'm not so hot on his straight blues stuff (as heard on his debut, HERE COMES SHUGGIE OTIS), but his "progressive soul" (for lack of a better term) on INSPIRATION INFORMATION is alright with me.
His second LP, FREEDOM FLIGHT, was like a halfway house between the two styles.

huh, so that lost album is totally unheard? interesting. someone on some other thread was saying that shuggie live in the last few years was ... not great.

New album Wings of Love (well new to us anyway - it was recorded from late '70s to early '00s) out 16 April - and is streaming now on NPR.
CD will inexplicably include a second disc with yet another reissue of Inspiration Information, an album 95% of ppl interested in the new one already have, this time with four previously unreleased outtakes added but not the four tracks from Freedom Flight.
Will be performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this friday nite.
Also on tour over the next month. Stoked!

Funny this thread should pop up (and maybe not the best thread for this) but I was just trying to track down these 70s recordings Johnny Otis and Shuggie did with Louis Jordan. They're like the 3rd or 4th time Jordan rerecorded his hits, so the performances are certainly not definitive, but they're interesting. (There are other volumes with Charles Brown and Joe Liggins.) They're on Johnny's own label, available as mp3s on Amazon, but I have never seen a physical copy.
