Prince will win this, but I voted for Two Tribes.

No, this is one entire year, but in chart record terms it is still one of the greatest year of UK chart history, beating several records for sales and longevity in one year.

That's Livin' Alright (From 'Auf Wiedershen Pet') by a country mile

I think that's the only one in this list (and in fact in all of the 1980s year-end-list polls I have posted) that I haven't heard at all.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 November 2007 12:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd probably choose to hear White Lines or When Doves Cry before any of the others but my 13 year-old self would have been torn between Two Tribes and 99 Red Balloons and would probably have gone with the hairy-pitted German.

Howard Jones - 'Like To Get To Know You Well'

My mate had a 12" version of this that had him singing in multiple languages.

"Time After Time" then and now.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 November 2007 12:12 (sixteen years ago) link

He did? :) I remember the single sleeve had the title printed in several different languages.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 November 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

And btw. My 13-year-old self probably would have gone for "Against All Odds" as well. That song has stuck with me.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 November 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I've got the whistly bit from Street Dance doing a headspin in my brainz right now.

NickB, Friday, 23 November 2007 12:40 (sixteen years ago) link

He put out a The 12 Inch Album of all the extended versions of his singles that had it on as well.

It's weird knowing the words to a song but not knowing what you're singing (I do this with Xmal Deutschland's 'Qual')

The Smiths, Zen Arcade, Let It Be, Double Nickels On The Dime, Ocean Rain, Stop Making Sense, Reckoning, Hatful Of Hollow, Treasure, How Will The Wolf Survive, Medicine Show, From Her To Eternity, A Walk Across The Rooftops, It'll End In Tears, Brewing Up With Billy Bragg, Climate Of The Hunter, New Sensations, I Often Dream Of Trains, Eden, Cafe Bleu and The Wonderful & Frightening World Of The Fall were released, and that is what made number one in the singles charts?

I think I may have just identified the point at which I stopped buying singles and started buying albums....

is this the top 50 sellers of that year?

pisces, Friday, 23 November 2007 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

careless whispers no doubt!

"'It's Raining Men'?!"
"Yeah, not no more it ain't!"

Sara Sara Sara, Friday, 23 November 2007 15:41 (sixteen years ago) link

is this the top 50 sellers of that year?

It must be some kind of calculation based on positions and weeks together. Or Band Aid would have topped.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 November 2007 22:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Though Careless Whisper was WHAM! That is like my favorite song ever.

I thought "Automatic" was by a man for years.

Abbott, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:50 (sixteen years ago) link

"Careless Whisper" was George Michael's first solo single, even though featured on a Wham! album. In the US it was credited to Wham! feat. George Michael, but in the UK (and the rest of Europe) it was credited to George Michael alone.

"The Reflex"

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Grandmaster Flash of course has to do with all the hip-hop fans at ILM, but "99 Red Balloons" as the runnerup is madness!

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 08:49 (sixteen years ago) link

But, Geir, the runner-up is a six-way tie!

JN$OT, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:38 (sixteen years ago) link

And why is it madness? (It's not anyway, it's Nena)

Mark G, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Geir Hongro (Don't Do It)

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean, it's a list full of great songs, and then a cheesy Europop number at number 2.

I wish the top 50 today was even remotely this good. What an amazing time for pop music that was.
