(okay, also for seeing miss lucy down around the tracks, and she lost her home and her family and she won't be coming back, i guess....)

Yeah, I might definitely have to pick long train runnin'. they all sound so good on the car radio though. i heard black water a couple months ago in the car and i almost started crying like a baby. what can i say, i'm a 70's kid.

Even though it's a cover, "Jesus Is Just Alright" with me.

"Ukaiah"

I have a huge soft spot for another cover of theirs: "Take Me in Your Arms." A rilly great L.A. pop stab at the Motown song.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I've always loved "Long Train Runnin'," but if I have to pick only one, it'll be "Another Park, Another Sunday."

Betting this scans 8:1 in favor of pre-Michael-McDonald tracks.

Scratch that. I'll take the song that they play on The Simpsons when Homer takes Mr. Burns' yacht into International Waters and the guy from the Coast Guard says, "But we only want to party."

Ah, I forgot about "It Keeps You Runnin'". I'm sticking with "Takin' it To the Street", though.

"Long Train Runnin'" deserves to be their theme song - especially since as a youngster, I thought they were singing "Well now look/We're the Doobies now!"

HYSTERICS.

I hate to say it....but could it be that the Doobies actually had a fair amount of decent songs?

I must be losing my mind. Time to go listen to some Venom and jab myself in the trachea with a rusty fork.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I literally grew up on the Doobies best of, there are very few songs that are burned into my brain more indelibly than theirs. the Doobies fucking rule.

Rockin Down The Highway, good driving tune.

I like "Another Park, Another Sunday," for some reason. I don't mind "Takin' It to the Streets," as far as their Steely Dan period goes.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:22 (eighteen years ago) link

"Listen to the Music". What can I say, it's one of those songs I'll stop everything and listen to if it comes on the radio.

Vic Funk, Saturday, 23 April 2005 18:28 (eighteen years ago) link

A song that I used to hate with great exuberance, but must begrudgingly tip the hat to... "What A Fool Believes"

I still don't understand a fucking thing he sings in it, but that verse lead melody is just killer.

A bit on the side of the thread, but it's been 7 years, so I don't care. How the hell did Led Zep get away with Trampled Under Foot? It basically is Long Train Coming, as you guys are of course well aware. I've never found any info on those two songs. I mean, the Doobies must have been big enough to sue, right?

Mule, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure that manager with the baseball bat had a word with Doobie Freres and worked it out.

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

Valid point. But still.. It's just too obvious. Both songs are great though, so it's not really a problem. I just wondered if there was any story on them.

Mule, Sunday, 29 April 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

Really surprised Kid Rock hasn't done a mash-up of these two songs.

It's absolutely What a Fool Believes - few bands that have walked the earth can claim a song that good

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 15 February 2021 03:36 (three years ago) link

Sticking outside their big singles, "I Cheat the Hangman" is a favorite of mine. That tune has a bit of everything in it, it is probably as close to prog/krautrock as the Doobie Brothers ever got and it's got some top harmony singing on it too.

earlnash, Monday, 15 February 2021 05:24 (three years ago) link

My favorite non-hit is probably You're Made That Way

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 15 February 2021 05:35 (three years ago) link

1. China Grove, which at 14 is where I decided "this is what they mean by 'riff rock'." (Riff rock runners up: Every other Tom Johnston song.)

Honorable Mention. Without You, which at 14 is where I decided "this is what they mean by 'a rave up'."

"What a Fool Believes," by a nose over "Long Train Running." It's a coin toss for me, though.

ok i did a deep doobie dive last week and my answer is "Losin' End" off Taking it to the Streets

I came to the conclusion that I'm not really a fan after doing a deep dive a few years back, but "Losin' End" was the one non-single album cut that stood out for me. (I think McDonald re-recorded it as a single years later.)

"What a Fool Believes" is the only track I really play anymore.
