I think he's just doesn't like giving interviews.

ps the new Syclops release is great - favouring "the E ticket" at the moment.

ah... i love that syclops 12... and by sentiment that seems pervasive here, i really like the heartbeat remix more than most and kind of imagine a club full of pillows where people dance wearing that linen business from p.m. dawn videos.

according to a friend he's got three tracks on the upcoming future of jazz comp, but i haven't investigated further.

i didn't want to start a thread for this. How can you base your album around Kate Bush's music including her vocal samples but not only including them...and not mention her? Is that normal/legal?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 29 December 2005 06:02 (7 years ago) Permalink

which album is that?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 29 December 2005 06:25 (7 years ago) Permalink

'Boof'. I figure there must be something I'm missing. 20 seconds in..oh this would go nice with some Kate Bush! 40 seconds in...oh wow that sounds like a Kate Bush song!...60 seconds..is he sampling her voice really low? then switch to another song and hear her "oh ohhhhhhhh oh" from 'This Woman's Work'.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 29 December 2005 06:36 (7 years ago) Permalink

With the B'more Basement Boys, he did produce Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman" and some fine deep house -most of which I do not have- 15 years ago. My absolute fave MF choon is this kraftwerkian electro-tech nummer with rising key stabs called "Space" that came out on Transfusion. So good I must YSI it at once :
http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1XWG6H86WSHU22ITK2BR69OW0M

Also search : "Down In The Dungeon" and especially "Moo That Rocked The Electric Chair", both are spectacular and can do serious dancefloor damage if you know what you're doing. In a lighter vein there's also "You Changed My Life" with killer fl00t s0l0 & disco cuts, speaking of which, Susan's prolly right about the heavy-handed sampling on some tracks - then again Moodymann has built a career out of Chic samples and nobody told the duder to stop.

Basically I recommend anything released for Transfusion and the "Up" 12'' on Discfunction (he lives in Britain since a while). The downtempo side of his production used to be dark and rich, like sitting in a life-infested jungle at sundown. I guess the Syclops releases indicate it's getting ruffer in that dept. It's fine retro-sounding future-shaped music anyway.

Remix search : I-Cube "Vacuum Jackers", Walter Jones "All God's Children" (Carl Craig-style genius), Minimal Compact "Happy Babouge"... Fulton = live(-sounding) drum breaks, warped funk bass, more cowbell. Sometimes formulaic but it ends up being enjoyable most of the time, hello again Mr. Kenny Dixon Jr.

let's turn this into a YSI thread then, as moo rocks but i know little of his non-wifey joints

Beta (abeta), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:50 (7 years ago) Permalink

Is that a challenge, Beta? I think the Eddie and The Eggs LP is really good. My Gigolo 12" is great too. His Walter Jones remix is my favorite of his remixes. It sounds....sideways, in a good way. It was my favorite remix for so long, i think it is from 2001,but it is hard to play out cause it is so long and weird, it would probably kill a dance floor.
Here is the new aforementioned Syclops 12" he produced on Tirk + Walter Jones remix.

Absolutely love Maurice's mix of Ost & Kjex's "Have You Seen the Moon in Dallas?" - actually from 2004 but it's on the great Permanent Vacation mix. It achieves the unlikely feat of almost overshadowing his remix of I:Cube's "Vacuum Jackers". So so pretty.

additional tah for the YSI.

+ Speaking about "Permanant Vacation" mix (which is great, but then I love anything in which the first adjective involved in describing it is "pretty" - see love for any Ewan Pearson set as well), Vahid, you have to check out Permanant Vaction's Kathy Diamond 12" "All Woman" (produced by Fulton) which is the first single of her coming album "Miss Diamond To You" (which hopefully includes "Sunshine" and other Fulton productions).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 16 November 2006 16:00 (6 years ago) Permalink

Yeah I definitely get a Ewan Pearson vibe off of Permanent Vacation (the first half of his Resident Advisor set is like a proggier version of the same). The Joakim remix also is absolutely stunning.

Reasonably late response, but there are some quotes from Fulton regarding Ladyvipb here http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-retail-stores-not/4645368-1.html On the other hand I swear I read him saying somewhere that Ladyvipb stood for Lady V.I.P. Bitch aka ex-girlfriend.

listened to syclops "the fly" the other day, still gives me the chills when that pad synth sound comes in, turns this slightly grating, gimmicky track into something else entirely.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 29 February 2008 15:47 (5 years ago) Permalink

I was looking for that thread, when this one got revived. What was it called? Maybe not a specific Fulton thread?

I have Stress, the second Mu album, Where's Jason K, the I:Cube, Rapture, Hot Chip and !!! remixes (and I only just found out that he produced that !!! album) and the RA mix, as well as some of those Bubbletease Communications things. Oh, and Kathy Diamond All Woman and Alice Smith Love Endeavour.

I LOVE all these things - but especially the last two. I saw him DJ at that Lovebox weekender thing last summer and it was great. It all sounded like the Alice Smith remix. Gospel piano house-type stuff. It was amazing.

Erm, so what else do I need?

been listening to the stress record a bit lately, it is fantastic. i need to hunt down all the singles from it - chicken lips did a pretty mental dub of 'my gigolo'!

still yet to see syclops record in the shops unfortunately.

haitch, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 02:38 (4 years ago) Permalink

would really like to hear that chicken lips version. i should listen to them more.

got syclops today. it's amazing. like he figured out how to accentuate every good part of all his old albums while simultaneously ditching the goofy aspects (flute solos, aimless ambient interludes, creeping un-tunefulness) that held albums like "boof: life is water for gerbadaisies when they're dancing" back.

really, really hard to believe that it's a band, though.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 06:43 (4 years ago) Permalink

he was pretty insistent upon it, even in person

jaime, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 06:48 (4 years ago) Permalink

i think syclops is not very good. it's like an untuneful IDM album. reminds me of Squarepusher's "Music is Rotted One Note". lots of cool sound effects with no substance. no songs. no melodies. the only 2 songs that are any good are The Fly (when those keys come in near the end is really nice) and Where's Jason K.

then again, i'm not a fulton fanboy. didn't really like the Mu album and thought the Kathy Diamond album was just ok. never heard anything else.

jaxon, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 06:57 (4 years ago) Permalink

if you think this is untuneful you should hear older fulton songs. it gets annoying at times. incredible production, amazing beats, but the synth squiggles are just all over the place.

maybe it's a concept thing. on a certain level it's not so different from ornette coleman's "free funk" albums, where dudes are just vamping all over the place with no regard for anything like a hook.

syclop at least has some hooks?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 07:51 (4 years ago) Permalink

The Bubbletease podcasts are packed full of incredibly tuneful, melodic and hooky stuff, supposedly all Fulton originals (I've rarely noticed a sample at least). Most of that never sees a release, so I wonder if he just thinks the skronky, squiggly style is what the world wants from him?

jng, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 14:06 (4 years ago) Permalink

God, reading back through this thread has reminded me how badly I want an ID on that awesome fuzzy ambient techno track that comes before the Streisand edit on the RA podcast.

jng, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 14:10 (4 years ago) Permalink

on a certain level it's not so different from ornette coleman's "free funk" albums, where dudes are just vamping all over the place with no regard for anything like a hook.

jaxon, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:44 (4 years ago) Permalink

Definitely hear the Music is Rotted One Note, Jaxon, but in a good way, for me at least.

Great variety to the productions, more than I was expecting. Holds up to multiple listenings in a variety of contexts.
