I absolultely and utterly agree. Best band of 2003 as far as I'm concerned. Saw them play live twice. Have their heads screwed on absolutely the right way and know exactly how to take the piss. Can't wait for the third album.

neil simpson, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic. Brilliant lyrics, huge hooks. I think my favorite is "Alan is a Cowboy Killer."

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Love them to a frightening degree. The live shows are the best kick in the arse (and I live in Brooklyn, so I've been dealing with the art-punk onslaught for the past year and a half). McLusky Do Dallas was easily one of the top albums of 2002.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Heard the album, preparing to be underwhelmed. It was good, reminded me of the noise rock salad days when ever Touch & Go and AmRep band sounded somewhat like that. Then I saw them live. Coked up, hoarse, sloppy, ugly, like a drunken version of Supergrass. Not good. At all. The crowd sucked too (this was at Luxx, though, so what more could I expect).

mosurock (mosurock), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just don't get. I really feel I should.I wanted to. Where are the toons/ the power? I've been back to'does Dallas.' half a dozen times and it fails me. The song titles had me in stitches but it's just not snotty enough...

panico (panico), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Love 'em. Like the second record better than the first, seems a little more rawk powerful. They're amongst a handful of bands that are doing OK mostly aping the Pixies. It's still an awful bandname though.

wl (wl), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 04:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can't stand them. They make me yearn for Yatsura, on the slightly dated 90s rock tip. And that's saying something.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why would anyone think they sound like the Pixies, that's what gets me.

And it's a great name, all those harsh 'k's. And you gotta respect Mrs Mclusky or you get detention, right?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why would anyone think they sound like the Pixies, that's what gets me.

'Cause they do. To me. I think about Surfer Rosa most every time I hear 'em. Not a handicap to my enjoyment 'tho. But I could be wrong.

wl (wl), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I own Surfa Rosa but not actually got around to listening to it. Best do that then. I have heard a lot of other pixies stuff mind.

How can a band with one singer who plays very simplistic (but v v good) guitar sound like a band with two guitarists with very different styles? Also the bas is a lot different i reckon and the pixies aren't half as frantic.

It will be interesting finding out.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 07:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

easily one of the best things i've heard in a while...

edde, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

listen to "surfer rosa" then throw away all your other pixies records made afterwards. then throw away your mclusky records.

mosurock (mosurock), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Surfer Rosa is good in a sitting back and enjoying the noise kind of way. However, I do not find it good in a jumping on the bed yelling "your heart's gone the colour of a DUST! BIN!" kind of way. Mclusky wins.

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

four years pass...

The new album by Future of the Left, which is the singer + drummer from Mclusky plus another guy, has leaked and it is very very good. Like Mclusky but maybe a little poppier? It is called "Curses."

DJ Mencap, Monday, 6 August 2007 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link

(I still think Mclusky Do Dallas is easily better than any Pixies album)

mclusky are fairly awesome, aren't they?

one thing, though: the similarities between the otherwise wonderful 'support systems' and mercury rev's 'hercules' are startling. i'm sure you could do a fine cover of the one mutating into the other and back again.

"seamus..." has one of the most perfect build-ups i can care to name. "collagen rock" is mega catchy. "day of deadringers" slays. "Slay!" slays. "1956 And All That" tortures, maims, and then slays. etc.

Just got offed, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Absolutely one of my favorites. God, "the World Loves Us and Is Our Bitch," "London Whine Company," "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues." So glad I got to see them before they broke up.

Mclusky lovas would be making a good choice listening to the new "Future Of The Left" album mentioned by n/a above. It's great.

I'd heard that. I got their album a while ago, thought it was meh, probably should listen to it again.

John Justen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:42 (sixteen years ago) link

def. wasn't as "oh shit this sounds like mclusky hooray" as Future of the left.

John Justen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link

In the same way that Klaxons skewed the possibilities of pop, FOTL are attempting to do the same for rock.

lol NME

"London Whine Company,"

fuck yes! the ultimate end-of-the-world chord sequence and drumming combination..
And yes the FOTL album is, dare I say it, just as good as any Mclusky release.

Simon H., Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:41 (sixteen years ago) link

the more i listen to the FOTL album, the more i'm growing to love it. i was ever so slightly underwhelmed at first.

but mclusky ... ho wow, what a band. WOT A BAND.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Really? The FOTL just showed up in the mail about a week ago, and I'm still kinda undewhelmed.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

it isnt as good as more mclusky would (might) have been, but it's as good as we're likely to get. anacademyblahblahblah was the one that did it for me. When the EP/single/whatever came out however many months ago, that didn't leave much of an impression, though.

John Justen, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:30 (sixteen years ago) link

"Alan is a Cowboy Killer" remains unstoppable these many years later. I think it sounds like Spare Snare and not one bit like the Pixies.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 7 December 2007 02:43 (sixteen years ago) link

ahhh spare snare. now there's a secret treasure

electricsound, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I live in an alternate universe known as Earth-SS in which Spare Snare is not secret. Actually, most of "Do Dallas" doesn't sound like Spare Snare at all, which is probably why, while I like it, I like it only 15% as much as I like "Alan is a Cowboy Killer." Seriously, all lovers of "Alan is a Cowboy Killer" should run and go listen to "As a Matter of Fact."

I got that 3cd collection of McLusky a few years ago. Jusdging by this thread I need to find my copy. Think that was pretty comprehensive for what it was, but I'm not sure if there is a great deal of their catalogue not included or not.

I actually about half knew the earlier band The Cowboy Killers back in my hitching the UK following bands days. Not sure who was in both.

Yeah, definitely need to find that set. Very good band.
Nice to see they got something into that NME 100lps you should hear thing around Xmas time. I used to use things like that as buying guides to some extent in my late teens/early 20s so hope that's still true for youth now.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 12:58 (thirteen years ago) link

think you might have some crossed wires there dogg - Cowboy Killers were from nearish where McLusky come from (which I assume you know if you knew them?) but there's no member crossover, afaik they have no relationship at all

I bought my tickets for the December Philly show because I happened to be at the venue last night for a show but now I have to wait eight months and that will seem like an eternity!

Having seen them again last week (6 since they've been back I think?) absolutely nobody should be dismissing this as a heritage act or reunion cash cow even if they are filling venues bigger than they (or FotL) got a couple of hundred in.

They're better these days than the last time I saw the Chapple lineup.

They've also reprinted shitrock t-shirts although without the Saddam Hussein backprint.

Was just listening to a Christian Fitness album. Falkous always on the verge of greatness, which is probably good enough
