I wish someon ewould blow her up I guess. When I saw that ancient, sagging buttock creature on the Navy vessel... I was enraged. She is th e epitome of unsexy.

Thanks to "Believe" all is forgiven. And I do think she did "The Beat Goes On" which was worthwhile as well.

Well, didn't she do "Half Breed"? I seem to recall that the song was used in the movie Dance Me Outside during a driving scene, but maybe I'm hallucinating.

Not to mention the great Beavis & Butthead appearence - songs kinda suck, but the image is a fucking hoot

She did do Half Breed. And much hilarity ensued.

Then there's the time she harangued someone filming her as she came home on her mo'bike. "Can I not have a life?" she pleaded. Driving around on her Harley, wearing a German Stormtroopers helmet, she was confused as to why she should attarct any attention.

Classic for 'I Got You Babe' (esp. in 'Groundhog Day') and 'Believe', and also for singing backing vocals on lots of Crystals/Ronettes recs.

Dud for 'Walking in Memphis'.

Wrote the classic text for reinventing yourself. Madonna and others have followed suit. (The only problem that she didn't give any back- up plans for when one's career spirals in a the wrong direction - Lori Davis Infomercials notwithstanding)

I love Cher. Or rather, it's one of those things where I just like the *idea* of Cher. When I was a girl, Cher was pretty much the only dark-haired Barbie-like creature for miles. Dark, ethnic and totally glamorous. She was so cool and deadpan on the Sonny & Cher show. I love many of her records with Sonny, there's a sad quality to her voice.

I also love Cher because she defies such notions as "respectability", "good taste" and grace. It's because of people like Cher that I can stand to live in this country - fuck that Jackie O. bullshit. Cher is redneck exotic royalty. I sincerely believe she doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks.

Later records - not so much, but I think it's fabulous that a 50+ whatever woman could score a huge disco hit. And that song is growing on me anyway.

I guess the plastic surgery is kind of sad, it's not the Cher I knew and loved, but Cher as a myth is classic.

Cher is a terrifying creature. CLASSIC.

Cher then - CHOICE. Cher now - doesn't even exist. Britney's the new Cher anyway (Metal Mike said , Village Voice ??-??-01).

Apparently she writes songs too. She even penned a song about Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain.

Inextricably linked with my near-fatal road accident some three years ago. "Believe" was number one for the entire length of my stay in hospital (seven weeks!) and just reminds me of dodgy World of Leather ward beds, no sleep, tasteless breakfasts at 5:30 am, TV on all night to distract from pain and inability to sleep, such that "Carrie" mutated into the "Learning Zone" into "News 24" into "GMTV." Could swear that I lay there and watched Penny Smith interviewing Anthony Braxton. If only.

Call me a sexist pig, but Cher is definitely classic. She's been looking a bit plastic over the last few years, but she's still a reminder of a time when celebrities and starlets were truly attractive, not carved and augmented rubber sex dolls. Kind of the anti-Britney.

Jim Jones, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Why does that make you a sexist pig again?

Ally, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

Well, I guess I didn't make it that clear. But what I meant is that she's only a classic due to her sexy appearance. Her acting and music are generally quite dreadful, though she was okay in "The Witches Of Eastwick."
