I am making rigatoni with leftover/spare lasagne sauce later. Matt and I spent last night singing Auberg(in)e by Chris Rea as we cooked it. Oh the larks.

Highlights of weekend eating: POPOVERS! (I take back everything I sneered about American cheese etc, because clearly you invent the BEST food ever!) And torte caprese which is the most ridiculously artery-clogging cake. It doesn't even have flour in it, just chocolate and almonds and gallons of eggs and sugar. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 September 2003 15:48 (twenty years ago) link

I always thought popovers were British! (Because they're so associated with New England cooking in my mind, which seems to have taken the most boring and stodgy of English cooking hundreds of years ago and dressed it up with molasses, lobster, and the worst of Irish cooking. New England cooking, that is ... not my mind.) But James Beard says I'm wrong, so get in.

I haven't cooked anything today - but I ate half of a very nice pork pie.

I will most likely do this:
Take thinly sliced politically incorrect mean (pork, boneless) and.....

introduce it to olive oil, garlic, and shallots in a sizzling pan.

when they are properly acquainted they will come into intimate contact with...

---the herb salad, resting plurshly on top of the soft bed of greens.

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper will drizzle from on high,

and the fork will dance.

I had a crapload of basil around yesterday, so I made pesto -- kind of. Macadamias instead of pine nuts, and I used the food processor; so sue me. (I'm normally a pesto rockist.) It's very, very, very, very green. And I've put some on pasta for the girlfriend just now, and it's really pretty good. And very, very, very, very green.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 September 2003 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

Cooked nothing today.

Started the day with a little biscuit left over from yesterday morning and some water.

Spent most of the day at the hospital, so I had a hospital-grade hamburger, fries, more water, and a candy bar from the vending machine.

Went for a couple of hours to a cousin's 20th birthday party, but took along some grape-flavored Hawaiian shaved ice with me because I wasn't feeling up to eating anything heavy, e.g. the barbecue they were going to fix.

Am currently debating whether or not to fix anything to eat now; wish I had some popcorn, though.

Am looking forward to eating leftover homemade lasagna for dinner tomorrow, though. Yay!

Lately I've had to economise, and this means back to cooking lots of my own meals that'll carry over for lunch as well.

This week's was a flan/quiche thing, filled with onion, roast capsicum, mushroom and brocoli. Makes 4 large slices, plenty for lunch and dinner, with some rice.

I just ate a sausage roll with my last bit of the flan. I feel a wee bit ill now.

I can't decide what to make for dinner, but I'm thinking some kind of stew or stroganoff or something I can make with the steak and veg I have.

Flan=quiche. Pastry shell, eggs&cream fillinf with veg and cheese on top, baked... is that not a flan? I call it a quiche... I dunno... my brain hurts :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 03:13 (twenty years ago) link

Flan=mexican creme brulee at least in the US

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 03:16 (twenty years ago) link

yes, flan is a mexican desert, custard like.

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 03:25 (twenty years ago) link

Well a quiche is custard as well, just not sweet :) I have seen flan used in that context as well as dessert... but then I am very tired today so excuse me if I'm blathering... ughr can I go home now?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 03:37 (twenty years ago) link

Here in California the deciding factor is the presence of cheese and sugar, A quiche is savory, and involves egg and cheese as the base.

A flan is a custard-like sweet dessert in California at least.

But you can call it whatever you want!

And you should find a comfy bed to retire to ;-)

Asparagus and chorizo risotto sounds heavenly. How do you ensure you don't have those horrible gristly bits that puts me off most chorizos?

mark, if you cook chorizo a lot less than you would think (ie only a few golden/black bits) then it's way more tender. Assuming you're using the softer cooking chorizo that is. If yr using the hard stuff then you'll always get the hard bits even in the best.

try and get to Brindisa for their own brand, it's blooming marvellous.

srsly amazing Chinese BBQ sauce (making this ahead of time for some lamb meatballs) (i used a nice mango honey from whole foods and it really makes a difference):

4 tbsp. rice vinegar
2 tbsp. honey
2 tsp. sriracha or hot chili sauce
1/2 tsp. five-spice powder
