Yeah, the real sad part of this topic is that Scharpling and Tompkins aren't on friendly terms anymore, because they were great together.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 19 May 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

I could listen to RuPaul for forever.

Yes. Listening now. Has to be one of Mt favorite of these.

how's life, Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

Aasif Mandvi is a person I like, but I could not get into this interview at all for some reason.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:23 (nine years ago) link

maron seemed disinterested or something. but yeah the conversation was a bit boring

the glimmer man (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:28 (nine years ago) link

i suspect maron has pretty severe ADD and probably cant medicate it due to being sober? i also feel like his getting off track is sometimes an effort to steer the conversation towards drug stories because that where is the most lively and focused and connected with his guest.

These are just poorly informed assumptions, of course.

Wow that Stephen Malkmus is a chatty one, no?

get up in this twerk cypher (sunny successor), Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:37 (nine years ago) link

Well yeah, where regular people will bond over shared experiences relating to pop culture or personal history or other benign topics, Maron has very little interest in things like that and will dig for darkness or dependency or turmoil because I think that's the only outlet where he feels like what he has to say if of any worth.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:42 (nine years ago) link

really liked rupaul's unapologetic pro-acid stance.
great reveal after the first half of Ru asserting "I have no ego! I have no fear! I am open to the universe!" and then "Oh by the way I did five hits of acid a day for a decade."

brio, Thursday, 22 May 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

I think Mike Birbiglia is great.

banjoboy, Friday, 23 May 2014 01:50 (nine years ago) link

rupaul's "do you have another shirt?" was loool

that interview was a good listen but i'm kinda bummed out to learn rupaul is such a stereotypical delusional hippie

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Friday, 23 May 2014 23:44 (nine years ago) link

Yeah Ru is made of selfhelp koolaid.

It was offputting for me when I first encountered it. I dunno that I'd stand for THAT much bullshit in anyone else. But as an avid drag race fan now I give him a pass because he genuinely helps sooo many queens find their way on the show with that exact koolaid. It's nutty as hell but it seems to work? idk

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 24 May 2014 00:54 (nine years ago) link

but it's funny how almost everything he says is this kooky collage of metaphors

the matrix!
the projector!
the wizard!

this part of the interview caught me off guard

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Saturday, 24 May 2014 00:57 (nine years ago) link

Yeah he got really vehement really quickly...I wasn't expecting that level of a reaction from Ru on a popular podcast like Maron's, even though I had a pretty good idea of where he stood already.

The Steve Brill interview in the 500 episode is really something - much more like the early episode.
You hear about all the shit that's gone down between them, and the 'old' marc and you're thinking yeah wow he's changed a lot AND THEN you hear all the stuff that has gone down just within the last few years and it's like omg he still is kind of this walking nightmare of insecurity still

the stuff about the Mighty Ducks scene that got cut; 'You scared some of the ducks' was priceless

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

the fact that Brill is even talking to him still is kind of a miracle

Hollywood's such a weird place

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

His tv show seems like it should be better than it is but it just hedges its bets too much.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 20:59 (nine years ago) link

I haven't watched since the first couple of episodes of the first season

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

It hasnt really gotten any better. He has good people on the show but the stuff thats supposed to be farcical just doesnt go far enough.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

yeah it just felt like I didn't really need more Maron - the podcast is enough and he's already way too much as it is, lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 21:08 (nine years ago) link

I was skeptical about the "the special topic for the 500th episode is... ME!" but the Brill interview was kind of great.

brio, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 21:18 (nine years ago) link

i felt a bit awkward about the brother and the mom interviews, but Brill is def worth it

halfway into the Chris Cornell interview -- he's really chatty, it's actually pretty good!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:30 (nine years ago) link

I loved how Cornell was bold enough to call bullshit on Mother Love Bone being the pivotal act in Seattle's 1988-92 boom, instead saying with no humility whatsoever that Soundgarden was the band that turned the tables. (For the record, that's how I remember it happening as well.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:53 (nine years ago) link

yeah I know it can lapse into massive ego but I do like how he was like our band fucking RULES and we melted faces

and I liked that he pressed how their Led Zeppelin/Sabbath riffage got serious gasface from everyone else at the time, and YET they still melted faces

god I fucking loved them. I went to the last reunion show thinking it was probably going to suck and Cornell just wasn't who he used to be anymore and then they melted MY face and I was happy again :D

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

but there's some awesome Maron facepalms

Cornell talking about cleaning up fishguts & Maron's all WAS THAT AT PIKE'S MARKET?

Soundgarden are so loathsome I'll be deleting this as soon as Maron's intro is done

feel better?

relentlessly pecking at peace (President Keyes), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

I wish Soundgarden had more fast songs like Rusty Cage and fewer dirgey Sabbath homages (and I wish Black Hole Sun had never been written), but they're an okay band for what they are.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

I believe the phrase is "Are we good?"

Soundgarden were deadly, you fules. I haven't listened to a WTF in a while. Is the Vince Vaughan one any good?

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 19:46 (nine years ago) link

no, Maron too scared to ask him about Glenn Beck

relentlessly pecking at peace (President Keyes), Tuesday, 3 June 2014 19:56 (nine years ago) link

the Vaughan one is great

Can Marc interview a single woman without flirting his balls off?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

No. Marc is sleazy.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 5 June 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

yeah, it's not great

don't remember him flirting with Lena Dunham or Judy Greer or Annabelle Gurewitch or, obviously, Morgan Murphy, top-of-the-head-ing recent ones
