Teenage Girl Crush on Deceptive Fifty

that gallery won't open for me, what a devastating tragedy for nostalgic sexism

rage against martin sheen (sic), Monday, 19 May 2014 08:18 (nine years ago) link

If you can't open it, how do you know it's sexist?

I just remembered Fluffy.

Xps You just remember Angelica - 'why did you let my kitten die', possibly a cover of Ice Ice Baby...

the singer is now in indiepop meets comedy duo The Lovely Eggs

ha i am/was into both and was unaware of this

stiff alboner (electricsound), Monday, 19 May 2014 10:10 (nine years ago) link

also in what sense are the popguns britpop? other than their prodigious smack intake

I remember Fluffy

۩, Monday, 19 May 2014 13:28 (nine years ago) link

had no idea fluffy were regarded as part of britpop as the 'black eye' album is more punk/garage r-n-r.

mark e, Monday, 19 May 2014 13:42 (nine years ago) link

then again, it has been a long long time since i actually listened to it.

mark e, Monday, 19 May 2014 13:43 (nine years ago) link

anything on the evening session = britpop afaic

now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Monday, 19 May 2014 13:56 (nine years ago) link

if it was a british guitar act it got labelled britpop. Just like during grunge top of the pops called the spin doctors and the lemonheads grunge.

Much (not all) of the Lovely Eggs stuff is pretty wonderful. They might have been my favorite old band discovered last year.

dlp9001, Monday, 19 May 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

one year passes...

Okay, 20 years on from that stupid chart battle:

Blur
Pulp
Radiohead
Suede
Super Furry Animals
Supergrass
Verve (pre-A Northern Soul)

Fuck the rest.

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:19 (eight years ago) link

surely we can move on from this list of standards ?

mark e, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:21 (eight years ago) link

That seems, to me, pretty much it for what has endured in terms of '90s British guitar pop. The rest of the stuff I listen to from the '90s these days seems to be electronic/dance music and US alternative rock.

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:27 (eight years ago) link

i realise ILM hates them now but surely any list without Oasis is somewhat skewed.

ps. glad you made the difference re electronic/dance - hence my original miffed groove !

mark e, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:34 (eight years ago) link

Being from the US, I didn't get any of the negative press/attitude that seemed to hang around Dodgy, but I loved their Homegrown album. Haven't listened to it in 20yrs, but it sure was fun in 94/95.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:37 (eight years ago) link

did you know that the Bluetones have recently extended their 20th anniversary reunion tour by 18 dates due to popular demand? I'm not going because I don't like going to gigs, but I love the Bluetones

soref, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:41 (eight years ago) link

here's what the 'tones have been up since the band broke up

Four years ago The Bluetones, one of the last surviving foot soldiers of Britpop, took their bows and went their separate ways, spitting up - we assumed - for good. Singer Morriss became a wandering troubadour, on a never-ending solo tour, acoustic in hand, playing old hits and new tunes. He’s just put out his third record, The Taste Of Mark Morris. They’ve all been very good. His brother, bassist Scott, moved to Japan to utilise a nifty skill for graphic design and animation; drummer Eds Chester is an osteopath, while guitarist Adam Devlin has carved out a new identity as a guitarist for hire (most notably with excellent Socialist supergroup Thee Cee Cees) and, despite being genuinely sweet in real life, has a neat sideline as a superbly effective twitter troll (according to his profile “BLOCKED by: @piersmorgan @DailyMailUK @KTHopkins @KayBurley @Nigel_Farage @Scientology @lancearmstrong @Joey7Barton @U2 @Sting and @gwenstefani. Twice”.)

xxpost:

Oh yeah, while Britpop undoubtedly got a lot of coverage at the time, it would be beyond stupid to even imply that it was the only thing that happened/was happening in the '90s.

Oasis were undoubtedly at their best from 1994-1996, and incredibly huge in the UK for a couple of years, but I really struggle to find the enthusiasm to listen to one of their albums in 2015. I'm pretty much the same with other bands from the time, too, even Manic Street Preachers.

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:48 (eight years ago) link

Turrican, have you listened to Mark Morris' latest solo album, 'The Taste Of Mark Morris'? it includes a cover of OMD's Souvenir

soref, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:52 (eight years ago) link

Eh!?

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 22:55 (eight years ago) link

i'm with turrican on that particular demand !!?

mark e, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:02 (eight years ago) link

oh shit, that album is full of crazy covers. gonna play now.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:03 (eight years ago) link

it wasn't a demand! just an enquiry

soref, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:05 (eight years ago) link

I like his versions of Souvenir and Love Comes Quickly, I'm going to go ahead and say that say that covering Duchess from Scott 4 was a mistake, though

soref, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:07 (eight years ago) link

he was a worse singer than the prat from the seahorses (which says a lot)

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:07 (eight years ago) link

fair enough.

note (as cosmic et al know) : i aint no brit pop hater, as i have a LOT of the 2nd/3rd tier level stuff hidden away in the archive - just i get bored with the same names being dragged out ..

mark e, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:11 (eight years ago) link

Nah, I haven't heard it, but I am surprised to hear that he's done an OMD cover.

Turrican, Monday, 26 October 2015 23:42 (eight years ago) link

that select cover is the answer obviously

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 19:45 (eight years ago) link

Listeking to Lovelife by Lush right now, holds up imo

This is one of the threads that got me into ILM, I used it as a source for this article / compilation - https://haonowshaokao.com/2015/09/20/britpop-nuggets-part-one-some-people-are-born-to-dance/ - thought I had posted it here, but evidently I was too embarrassed or something. That's almost certainly not the reason for the page views.

Enjoyed that thx. Don't know most of that stuff Lol at Pullover. Of course there was a Britpop band called Pullover.

Jesus fucking christ.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 February 2017 09:02 (seven years ago) link

I find it hard to believe anyone likes those bands. Especially My Life Story. Who were even worse than The Divine Comedy.

Odysseus, Monday, 20 February 2017 09:11 (seven years ago) link

I almost - almost - checked out the new Dodgy album last year

imago, Monday, 20 February 2017 10:42 (seven years ago) link

all of these bands were sometimes quite good, apart from Dodgy who were never good

soref, Monday, 20 February 2017 10:52 (seven years ago) link

Dodgy were good. Homegrown is a decent album. They had a handful of singles that were really good. Then they did Free Peace Sweet and that was just fucking awful, all of it.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 20 February 2017 10:55 (seven years ago) link

nah, has some good stuff on it

good enough might be the worst song by any of these bands though

imago, Monday, 20 February 2017 10:59 (seven years ago) link

I thought Space were sort of endearingly/entertainingly crap at the time, I think I was probably wrong.

chap, Monday, 20 February 2017 11:08 (seven years ago) link

guys, guys

Treesh-Hurt (Noodle Vague), Monday, 20 February 2017 11:09 (seven years ago) link

Salad is probably my favourite of these groups, but apparently Salad Undressed is "Marijne & Paul from Salad, acoustically unleashing songs from then...and now...." which I'm not so sure about

soref, Monday, 20 February 2017 11:10 (seven years ago) link

i wanna get off this endless nostalgia treadmill now, cheers

i did lol at the graphic designers' evident difficulty finding suitably dynamic and/or glamorous pictures of mark morriss and fucknuts from space for the poster. look at those dull bastards standing there grimacing
