The phrasing "impure thoughts' makes me think this was a religious fundamentalist type of homeschooling event.

^^

there are evangelical homeschoolers and there are liberal hippie homeschoolers. they are very different/

marcos, Thursday, 15 May 2014 13:09 (nine years ago) link

i assumed it was an event for all types of homeschoolers & the conflict arose when the liberal hippe girl showed up and there were way too many evangelical parents running the show

meaning it prob wasnt promoted as an evangelical churchy thing & she was blindsided by attitudes a lot of other kids there have grown up around

still shitty & terrible no matter the explication

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Thursday, 15 May 2014 13:28 (nine years ago) link

of all the wishes that story could inspire yours seems misplaced and disparaging of other teenage girls.

Sorry, that was badly worded, I didn't mean to say "other teenage girls are dumb" rather than "I'm so happy this teenage girl sees things they way they are".

And yeah, regardless of who were the target group of the prom party, I just find it incredible that this sort of Medieval level approach of gender (the sin is in the woman, it's her fault if we're drooling over her) still exists!

Tuomas, Thursday, 15 May 2014 14:01 (nine years ago) link

I joined my group of friends, (there were six of us), and told them what happened, they were all appalled, especially considering we’ve been attending this prom all four years of high school and usually wore much shorter dresses then we chose this year.

oh yeah, of course you can; the school may limit their automatic invite list to a particular class (mine was juniors/seniors) but anyone is allowed in as a date

It's very frustrating, especially as the father of a daughter, that in an era where women get the majority of college and graduate degrees (or something close to that), this is still what gets pushed on them (the youtube ads).

Also toddler girls' clothing is pinker than ever with as many hearts, birds and flowers crammed onto it as possible, while boys' clothing is full of trucks, spaceships and monsters.

For reference:

TBF, one of the six is at least gender-neutral I guess? (fighting bullies or w/e). At first I was like "oh, one of them has a superhero uniform" and then I realized that one is also about cupcakes.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Thursday, 15 May 2014 16:49 (nine years ago) link

And even the bully one is "with style" and the confidence one makes reference to "accessories" and involves making a heart with her hands.

my niece had her Senior Ball this weekend. She got sent home for 'excessive cleavage'. as far as I could see from the group photos her cleavage was no worse than other girls, it's just she has a bigger chest than anyone her age.

i don't think schools really think about better ways to handle this kind of stuff. especially waiting for her to arrive at the ball with all of her friends and then have her get sent home like some pariah on what is supposed to be a lovely night

I get sending kids home for being drunk or high but ... idk

the puritanism of it is really fucked up

idk exactly how it went down. I haven't talked to her in person to find out what happened...didn't want to press her for details at the time since I figured she'd be pretty upset and embarrassed.

this was in one of Sac's northern suburbs. Known for being kinda conservative but still. I never knew they would take it that far.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Thursday, 15 May 2014 22:28 (nine years ago) link

how horrible for your poor niece, vg. it seemed completely absurd and anachronistic when the elderly nuns at my school carried on like this and that was years ago, and they were elderly nuns. (nuns who said among many other things that girls have always to set the sexual standards because boys cannot control themselves in the slightest, and you can only get raped if you allow your muscles to relax sufficiently to enable penetration at which point you are sinning because you obviously must want it to happen otherwise you'd stay chastely clamped up and god is vigilantly monitoring your muscles so even if you claim to be a victim you won't get away with it in the long run.)

Maria Goretti (October 16, 1890 – July 6, 1902) is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Roman Catholic Church, and she is one of the youngest canonized saints.[1] She was born on the eastern side of Italy to a farming family, but increased poverty forced the family to move to the western side of the country when she was only six. Her father died when she was nine, and the family had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. Maria took over household duties from her mother, while her mother and the rest of her family worked in the fields. One afternoon, Alessandro, the son of the Serenelli family, made sexual advances to her, but when she refused to submit to him because that would be a mortal sin, he stabbed her multiple times. She was taken to hospital, but died after forgiving him. He was promptly arrested, convicted and jailed. After three years he repented, and when eventually released from prison, he visited her mother begging forgiveness, which she readily granted. He later became a lay brother in a monastery, eventually dying peacefully in 1970. Maria was beatified in 1947, and canonized in 1950. Her mother attended both ceremonies.

^ praised and held up as a role model for 'resisting temptation' wtf and sacrificing her life to preserve her 'purity'. i don't think anyone fell for it though.

not all of the nuns were so extreme but so what. and all this 2014 prom dress bullshit is just another point on the same piece of string.

estela, Friday, 16 May 2014 03:27 (nine years ago) link

Are there any male saints who forgave women for violence done to them? Ungh.

ianac, but i went to catholic girls school pre-k-7th gr, and it wasn't until i went to school with boys in 8th gr that i felt the full sting of all sexist eyes-on-u in the way being described here. it was a huge shock. at my school, there was really no talk of boys at all. it was like girls were the only people who existed. i kinda felt like that tbh. i had no brothers or friends with brothers. i knew no neighborhood boys. i didn't realize the gravity of this huge worldview shift for a long time, but i know for sure now that the shift to going to school with boys and the constant eyes on bodies at all times was not insignificant. if i had always been around it, i might not have found it so shocking, but it was new to me. it was a lot to take in at once.

i'm really proud of this girl for speaking up for herself. the behavior of the school/parents/adults in this situation sucks, but she's doing the right thing by talking about it. so at least things have changed in that regard.

LL, believe it or not this has been running through my mind a lot in the past few days, like it really made me *get* something about ogling, the male gaze, etc. that I didn't completely internalize before
