Mr Caption, apparently.

james lipton and his francs (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

I think it would be reasonable for a poster to list those people whose presence together in the photograph in question makes them happy; I agree that it seems unfair to expect a poster to do any research into the identities of others who may feature.

Tim, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 17:00 (nine years ago) link

After all, without that basic captioning we all run the risk of assuming you are made happy by the appearance of (say) Sting and Joel in a photograph, when in fact it was the presence of (say) Rudd and The Sterns which caused you pleasure.

We could end up talking at cross purposes! Who knows what disasters might ensue?

Tim, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 17:04 (nine years ago) link

Well at least there I can see yr argument tbf, rather than "poster with trait of demanding effort from others asks for effort from others 200 times in one thread"

online hardman, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 17:56 (nine years ago) link

Tuomas's request is completely reasonable and in the spirit of the thread IMO, no one is saying ''go do an hour of research,'' just post the names of the people that caught your eye. If nothing else, it would make it easier to control-f the thread to see if something's been posted already, though obviously it's a bit late for that to help much.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 18:04 (nine years ago) link

I realise I've dragged myself into arguing otherwise but I agree.

Asking after each pic when ppl have declined to do so isn't reasonable tho, nor is insisting in bizarre terms like others having a 'duty' to or even 'should' do it, as if 'no' wasn't an answer

james lipton and his francs (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 May 2014 18:14 (nine years ago) link

Anyway peace out t this isn't an election issue on the doorsteps, see you next time someone posts a pic itt

Best argument I've heard against my position yet.

Wouldn't stop reposts and certainly won't keep me from throwing up a pic and flitting off back to some weird tumblr site, but it's a valid point.

Yes! I'm not asking you to "research" every person in pic with kazillion people, but obviously you instantly recognized at least some of the folks in the pic, because why else would you have posted it in this particular thread? So how hard it is to write the names of those people in your post? It should take you maybe 20 seconds.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

And IMO it's the duty of every poster to be informative when it helps your fellow posters. Being needlessly oblique when others have asked you not to be is just rude. (It's not like the obliqueness is in service of a good joke or something here.) This should be a basic rule for every message board. I'm going to vote for anyone who runs on this platform.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

takes 0.96 seconds to google an image. being needlessly lazy and stupid when others have asked you not to be is rude.

i mean i get it's yr troll technique for many many years running now, to the point that you've actually been tempbanned over it before, but don't pretend it's not deliberately tedious and hostile

that this thread of all threads has caused so much friction over the years is incredible to me

goole, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

i feel like, over the years, maybe i've picked up the subtle style cues that would differentiate an unknown-to-me europoid face among "musician," "pol," "'footballer,'" "high culture icon" or "other media barnacle" but in general it's only rarely worth the investigation anyway? unless other people follow on with a lot of lols

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 22:29 (nine years ago) link

If this thread is about sharing a great thing you've found, deliberately excluding some people from the pleasure of it seems a bit ungenerous to me. I have to confess I have no effing clue who most of the people are in these photos, nor the tenacity to keep asking, and I've only still got the thread bookmarked because of the occasional gem it throws up. The rest of the time it's an annoyance.

There was some pic that a Britisheser posted of a boxer shaking hands with a convicted murderer? Or something like that?

Anyway, typical single-word "whoa" replies followed, so I went ahead and googled it to read the whole story about why the non-boxer was such a pariah. I Learned Something that day.

Now, if there had been a cutline like the one there for John Cooper Clark, a fella I know nothing about, I likely wouldn't have googled it since I already know the name.

I mean, I don't catch half the "jokes" on the Excelsior thread, but I don't insist on the punchline being explained to me either.

pplains, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

oversimplification but john cooper clarke = british jim carroll sorta. rock poet, releases a pretty great album in the early 80s. if you really really like that hannett factory sound i'd say seek it out. they used one of his tracks in a sopranos.

Maybe not too surprising but I don't think of their careers as overlapping.
