Tom Verducci says lowering the mound would help. Also this:

"Most every sport increases action and drama as the game draws near to its end; football teams can go to a hurry-up offense, hockey teams can pull their goalie, basketball teams can shoot more three-pointers...but the closer baseball games get to their conclusion the more they slow down and the less likely teams are to get a hit, which makes the excitement of the comeback less likely.

Let's use the National League as an example. From the seventh through ninth innings, nearly one out of every four at-bats ends in a strikeout (24.1%). In those innings, batters are hitting .232.

Now here's the context you need to know about that batting average. The worst hitting in the league's history occurred in 1908, when batters hit .239 for the season. So what is happening in today's game is that the late innings have turned into a brand of offensive baseball that is worse than the deadest of the Deadball Era years."

""Most every sport increases action and drama as the game draws near to its end... basketball teams can shoot more three-pointers"

just want to point out that what actually happens at the end of close basketball games is a long series of timeouts, fouls, and free throws.

Brandon Belt underwent surgery on Tuesday to have two pins installed in his fractured left thumb, manager Bruce Bochy, but the timetable for the first baseman's return remains six weeks.

The pins are expected to stay in for four weeks, and Belt would spend two weeks after that preparing to return to the lineup.

has anyone ever done an analysis of the worst seasons, injury wise? i suppose it would have tons of caveats but one way to do it would be to take the number of games on the DL and then look at how those players were projected to perform during those games, pre-injury, by ZIPS/Steamer Rest-of-season forecasts

heralded rockies prospect eddie butler, after being shelled in his big league debut friday, has been placed on the 15-day DL with a rotator cuff issue

at least he'll presumably be paid as an injured major leaguer, unlike chris withrow, whom the dodgers optioned just before he was diagnosed with a torn UCL. gotta be a grievance for that, tho, as he never even pitched for the AAA club

Arroyo has another year on his D-Back contract, he will try to come back.

If Arroyo somehow gets a bit back on his fastball from the surgery and recovery like some others have had, I could see him pitching into his 40s. He even talked about it on this interview a couple years ago.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/qa-bronson-arroyo-master-craftsman/

BA: To be honest with you, I think I could pitch as long as I can throw the ball 87-88 mph. I don’t know how long I’ll be able to do that. Physically, weight-room-wise, on the mound, I don’t feel much different than when I was 30. I’m 36 now.

The prime of my life, as far as velocity and strength, was in 2006. I was probably throwing the hardest when I first got traded here. I was 88 to 91-92. I don’t get the ball up to 90 mph much any more. I’ve had four outings here in the spring — granted, it’s spring training and there’s not a lot of adrenaline going — and I’ve only hit 89 once. I’ve been living at 87-88.

If I can keep doing that, I think I can pitch as long as I want to. My mind is better. You get more comfortable being out there in jams. You’re not panicking in situations. As time goes on, everything is easier — except keeping your velocity.

Masahiro Tanaka has a partially torn UCL and will undergo nonsurgical rehab, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday night.

In a best-case scenario, the Yankees ace will miss six weeks, Cashman said. If rehab doesn't work, Tanaka likely will need Tommy John surgery.
