Hmm, is this on the pop side of the topological saddle?

New eponymous album, m/f singers, consistently good singles - I can see where many who gave into Paramore last year will dig this.

Kind of reminds me of Metric mixed with something in a Hyundai commercial.

Apologies for not keeping this thread hopping. My usual rabid appetite for digging up new music isn't as rabid as its been in recent years.

French dream pop, with a side of Michael Jackson's dance moves:

I was a big fan of her ep from last year.

I have a bunch of stuff I've been meaning to post - not sure if it fits the not-pop-not-indie in the right way but I'll give em a shot

Sounds like a TV ad from the 80s crossed with 'Bette Davis eyes'

This has grown on me a bunch, also sounds a bit like an 80s TV ad, with Knife-style steel drums

OK, one more, just discovered this today but another Swedish Knife-esque electro pop band

Kate Boy has been my next big thing for the past year. They signed to Fiction records, finished the album a week ago, and it should be out later this year. They're probably more inspired by 80s Peter Gabriel or Kate Bush, but given Kate's inflections, end up in the Knife-alike category. I've been planning to carpetbomb a new thread once we have an album release date.

Just found the 'rolling like The Knife' thread :)
Sure there was a witch-house one too but can't find it

Is Emm Gryner too poppy or too indie (she does run her own label) for Mr. Fever? She seems to get little play in either pop or indie circles, though I dunno if its because she's too obscure or because she's been around for so long, so I don't think she's at all out of place itt. Her latest single is a duet with a Canadian astronaut:

just thought i would say that the kyla la grange album is really good and deserves to be talked about by a lot more people

ginuwine's cousin (monotony), Monday, 16 June 2014 14:29 (nine years ago) link

emm gryner!

(the answer to your question, sadly, is that the sort of music she makes is covered by basically no one anymore, unfortunately, unless you're courtney barnett or whoever)

katherine, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:22 (nine years ago) link

I haven't paid any attention to Little Daylight before because I just assumed they were a CHVRCHES clone (which they kind of are), but I heard this song "Mona Lisa" Saturday morning and it stayed in my head all weekend.

A lot of it is more slow and samey than I'd hoped for, but I've only listened to it three times. Need to bond with it some more. Title track is still one of my favorite songs of the year, though.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 June 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

Does Total Control fit this thread?

monster_xero, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

I like it. It seems maybe a little more like it's trying to recreate an old sound than draw from it in a new way, but it does a good job.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 June 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link

one month passes...

came across that HAERTS track listening to the Classixx Artist Radio station on Spotify and immediately bought it.

Lots of overlap between the things mentioned here and the things in this:

http://open.spotify.com/user/glennpmcdonald/playlist/75TlYFXWaDllyenFkbPMNp

although that list has no "not" agenda, and so definitely has lots of pop.

glenn mcdonald, Sunday, 20 July 2014 14:50 (nine years ago) link

Thanks! I thought I hardly listened to any music any more but 80% of that stuff is in my regular rotation so bodes well..
Including Uh huh her, Savoir adore, Frankmusik, Sound of Arrows which I haven't listened to in a while

The MS MR needs to be the chvrches remix imo

kinder, Sunday, 20 July 2014 17:14 (nine years ago) link

You probably need to check out the Kitten album too

kinder, Sunday, 20 July 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

Big fan of Woman's Hour from previous singles. Glad their album doesn't disappoint in the slightest.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 July 2014 21:45 (nine years ago) link

i was listening to a spotify station in the shower last week and that Mr. Little Jeans song came on and I went "wow, this is good!" so I looked to see who it was and when I saw the name my heart sank. Good song though.

glenn / seandalai / Johnny - thanks so much for your linking your Spotify playlists on various threads, found so many amazing jams through them.

In particular Fredi Michel 'Oye Poh!' on, I think, seandalai's playlist. Absolute fun party-Goat vibes.

Actually, upon giving this a listen, it's kind of disappointing. They've definitely got better songs and if this is how they want to introduce themselves to the public at large then they need better advisors. That said, I'm still optimistic about the album.

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 22:07 (nine years ago) link

On the bright side, "Call My Name" is officially released now as the b-side to this single.

Really liking this: Kleerup + Susanne Sundfør

https://soundcloud.com/kleerup/kleerup-let-me-in-feat-susanne-sundfor/

although "“Let Me In” will be impossible to evade in the coming months as it leads a global H&M campaign which is complemented by visuals directed by the legendary Jonas Åkerlund" :(

Fully listened to that Thomas Barfod album today while driving around running errands and "Busy Baby" required repeated listens when I got to that wicked deep bass synth in the choruses.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 6 September 2014 23:37 (nine years ago) link

That Tomas Barford album is really good but it's the Nina K collaboration tracks that are outstanding.

definite kate-bush-in-her-quieter-moments sort of voice too

Claire Brentnall does little to dispel this comparison, even visually.
