totally agree that if people trimmed their friends list, FB would be less terrible/more useful

i'm not really sure about that. i basically blocked all but a few friends from my newsfeed and it's not any more interesting. now instead of having 300+ people linking to stupid bullshit on the web, it's 10-15 people linking to stupid bullshit on the web. that's what the facebook environment is conducive to. it has never made me feel more connected to people. if i want to talk to my friends i call them or hang out with them.

marcos, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:39 (ten years ago) link

Well yeah -- and I did the same. The end result was that I ended up dropping off FB entirely for 2 months, and then when I came back, I was just way less interested in general. It has a use for me, I guess, in that my family/friends can see my pictures, and if I have to, I can catch up on their (generalized) exploits. But as an everyday thing, something that I have to make an effort to parse -- no thanks. It's aggressively soul-eroding.

Dominique, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:42 (ten years ago) link

completely agree with everything you said

marcos, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:45 (ten years ago) link

here and there i'll think "oh yea, facebook, i'll see what's going on there" and 30 seconds later i'm off

marcos, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:45 (ten years ago) link

I'd be more likely to use Facebook if it didn't keep reverting back to "top stories". I just want to read everything in chronological order.

Jeff, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:49 (ten years ago) link

just use www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr

not in my experience. most of the people i know and are closeish friends with don't live near me and are not phone talkers. i was off FB for over 2 years and ended up losing touch w basically everyone. it was just easier to rejoin with a small friends list to post baby pictures and updates to out of towners.

ha i certainly recognise this as one of the reasons a lot of white mainstream media types are suddenly "disenchanted" with twitter but LOL at the idea that any group of people anywhere is taking over twitter. it contains more multitudes and more communities than you realise.

lex pretend, Thursday, 1 May 2014 10:05 (ten years ago) link

Still more dumb racists on Twitter than outspoken POC. It's a common fallacy to think that your own Twitter feed is representative of the whole thing but clicking on an unfamiliar trending topic usually sets me straight.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 1 May 2014 10:10 (ten years ago) link

I first learned that lesson by searching for the #takemeout hashtag while it was on telly.

Alba, Thursday, 1 May 2014 10:23 (ten years ago) link

the thing about twitter is it's only really rewarding if you can bring original ideas to it, so people without original ideas see it and get confused

yeah one of the things twitter wants is for people to feel cool just following and not tweeting if they want but idk if thats ever really caught on, i dont think there are too many daily users who exhibit that behavior

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 13:09 (ten years ago) link

this piece is kinda common sensical https://medium.com/five-hundred-words/6f3b7e9f38fa

agree w this

None of this is to say Twitter is without its challenges. From my own perspective, the product is sort of a mess of half-baked engagement experiments. But underneath that still lies a fun, powerful, and important service. They just need someone to go in there and tighten things up. To trim the fat. To say “no”.

yeah i just wonder how many hardcore users actually take that approach, my feeling is its more those who occasionally check in for a minute or two shrug and close the tab, like to truly get that twitter drug youve got to get in there and mix it up do some RTs some @s send out some straight up tweets you know

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 13:35 (ten years ago) link

that's a good point

To say “no”.

otm, as is whoever said it has been product-managed to death. I get that they're saying "yes" because lots of these things are designed to make it easier for them to make money from it, but they're going to kill it in the process.

this is me basically, i basically use it as news wire plus joke book though, very very few irl friends on it though, they're all on instagram which i'm not interested in really.

how often would you say you "check in" with yr pal twitter

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

oh me and the toot go way back

purposely lend impetus to my HOOS (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

the extension of that is that typical user has to be ok with it being essentially non-participatory after their uncool and unfunny tweets fail to garner followers or comments or any attention at all really.

im essentially internet shy so im ok with being bad at twitter, but it'll always lag behind other services that are more flattering to the user imo.

ryan, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:23 (ten years ago) link

you can gain an audience over time by interacting with others via tweeting at them

if you're not boring

the follower count is prob twitters biggest impediment to a bigger audience, its too competitive

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 May 2014 15:26 (ten years ago) link

i've started tweeting at tech people, and it's fun to get favs and responses, but no one has followed me yet.
