most people don't need want an "information network" or whatever in their lives.

twitter is at its best when it's primarily for interacting with your friends about information

xpost why couldn't facebook be that for them?
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:18 (ten years ago) link
like, news shouldn't be the point but a minor feature from which discussions with your friends are born

facebook is crap
i could see facebook having a resurgence of sorts if people trim their friendslists - no one ever completely abandoned it à la myspace because it always fulfilled a functional use (events, basically)

cause facebook is for looking at pictures of babies, the thing m/l that makes twitter hard to understand for n00bs is people use it in a lots of diff ways for lots of differnt things, if it was a pure information network whatever that would look like then it would be easy to understand
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:20 (ten years ago) link

twitter is so fresh so clean
xpost
and as I found out over the weekend, how family keeps up with people who don't live close by. totally agree that if people trimmed their friends list, FB would be less terrible/more useful

once you "figure out" twitter, it's great--it's not always about making the user happy. make the user work
how many social networks are most people on? anecdotally, i see most people on facebook, a subset on instagram, a bunch on pinterest and twitter. i don't think people give that much of a fuck about news or information or whatever you want to call it, and they can just subscribe to the few things they're interested in on facebook and that's enough, obviating a need to sign up for twitter. a lot of us are on twitter but there are a lot more people out there who aren't and never will be
― markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:23 (ten years ago) link
I hate facebook and will never go on it - twitter is just low maintenance and simple enough for me. of course, their problem is they built this mildly amusing thing that doesn't make money, so it will be gone eventually as it hemorrhages users (which will happen to facebook too eventually)

yeah its an established progression at this point where during your userbase building phase you make the design good and easy so people will like it, then during your profit taking phase you fuck up the design in order to facilitate your money making

how many sources do people follow? ben thompson the other day said something like "people have seven websites they go to" and it was in the context of a bigger point that was probably way more nuanced, but the thing stands that you can just install the fucking cnn app or follow them on fb and you don't need a separate service to keep up with a thousand sources like all of us do

i'm not really sure about that. i basically blocked all but a few friends from my newsfeed and it's not any more interesting. now instead of having 300+ people linking to stupid bullshit on the web, it's 10-15 people linking to stupid bullshit on the web. that's what the facebook environment is conducive to. it has never made me feel more connected to people. if i want to talk to my friends i call them or hang out with them.
― marcos, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 21:39 (ten years ago) link
Well yeah -- and I did the same. The end result was that I ended up dropping off FB entirely for 2 months, and then when I came back, I was just way less interested in general. It has a use for me, I guess, in that my family/friends can see my pictures, and if I have to, I can catch up on their (generalized) exploits. But as an everyday thing, something that I have to make an effort to parse -- no thanks. It's aggressively soul-eroding.

here and there i'll think "oh yea, facebook, i'll see what's going on there" and 30 seconds later i'm off
I'd be more likely to use Facebook if it didn't keep reverting back to "top stories". I just want to read everything in chronological order.

not in my experience. most of the people i know and are closeish friends with don't live near me and are not phone talkers. i was off FB for over 2 years and ended up losing touch w basically everyone. it was just easier to rejoin with a small friends list to post baby pictures and updates to out of towners.
