Another Eulogy for Twitter: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/04/a-eulogy-for-twitter/361339/

Some of this rings true. It does feel a bit less fun to me, and a lot of the stuff that used to be fun to join, like shared shouting at the telly, seems to have stopped. I used to think it was just me/the people I follow, but maybe it's wider than that?

Also I'm pretty sure the continual fucking-around they're doing with the site and the apps is making it completely bewildering for new people, rather than a fun challenge like it used to be

Yeah I pine for the days of making pithy commments about x-factor with chris addison and caitlin moran and tracey thorn as well

I "get" that TWTR needs to make $ because it's public but it's such a sweet lil program it makes me sad that "people" think it's not worth anything and their developers keep trying to make it something its not

yes

stet, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

If it were a program it could just be open-source and live forever, but it's a service. Expensive keeping servers running that can do everything we've come to expect in real time.

But yeah it's been product managed within an inch of its life.

the twitter eulogy does resonate, have felt like that for a while, but there are certainly ways of making your own twitter better. mostly it comes down to not being boring and careerist

like i guess maybe its a ~twitter secret~ that you can't have an @ as your first character if you want others to see it, and that slows some newer people on the learning curve?

but i can't see an argument that one of the platform's most iconic characters whose inclusion in your 140 characters is necessary as part of the platform is just 'scaffolding'--its a necessary part of the body of your message that you're *directing* it at someone. just 'tagging' them like you might on fb is so much more passive and less meaningful imo. and does that make the hashtag scaffolding too?

i don't think they're going to remove either of those features, but i wouldn't be surprised if they make a move to make them more accessible, which isn't a bad idea esp. if they can come up with a way to do it without alienating their current userbase

markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:05 (ten years ago) link

fuck the "user base"

just because you don't find twitter useful doesn't mean it's not useful. for me, instagram is a much less enjoyable platform

markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link

what does "more accessible" mean there?

chillin' on an "awesome pretzel" hoagie (DJP), Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link

the @ and # are one of the big reasons companies fuck w twitter over facebook like when they throw a hashtag in corner of the screen of a tv show, its iconic, like there maybe be some usability problems w that but youre way past the point of no return

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:09 (ten years ago) link

it's well known that people get on twitter and then don't know what to do

like i guess maybe its a ~twitter secret~ that you can't have an @ as your first character if you want others to see it, and that slows some newer people on the learning curve?

there are official organisations and people who have been on twitter for years who seem not to realise this - ditto the "if you're a protected account, people who don't follow you can't see your @s of them"

sure but im sayin youre not gonna solve that by eliminating yr most core features youre going to have to find a better way, or maybe just admit youre a service thats not gonna ever be as big as facebook

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link

the big problem for twitter might just be that it's not that essential to most people's lives. it's good if you're really interested in a bunch of things or want to be active in some community, and some people use it as a more private facebook of sorts, but beyond that, if you just want to interact with your friends facebook might be enough. or instagram. or imessage.

markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link

xpost i don't think you have to necessarily "eliminate" it. might there be a way to even keep the @ stuff and make it easier for new users to get a handle on?

markers, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:12 (ten years ago) link

twitter knows its not a place it interact w yr friends, why it calls itself an info network not a social network

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:13 (ten years ago) link

people USE it as that though

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 18:17 (ten years ago) link

i could see facebook having a resurgence of sorts if people trim their friendslists - no one ever completely abandoned it à la myspace because it always fulfilled a functional use (events, basically)
