Seeing as this is sort of also the "cool gifs" thread now, have we talked about these MRI gifs of fruit & veg? Looks like it's been going for a while, so possibly. http://insideinsides.blogspot.co.uk/

it's a 1:250,000 scale map from the dept. of the interior, 1992! here's a giganto version: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/topo/250k/txu-pclmaps-united_states-index.jpg

it divides the US up into a series of topographical areas. in the big version i linked to you can see dates for each segment - that's the last year that the topographical map was updated for that segment. the idea was that you could contact them to order large versions of any of the segments.

totally. the original file is huge so i was able to print out a nice 2'x3' version and hang it up. endless fascination!

plus i've always thought it would be neat to order the tiny "(Chatham)" sliver of a map, hanging off the east edge of Massachusetts

i made a GIF for the prism pipe show at pehrspace in L.A. last night. some ambient musicians played while several "hypnoGIFs" were projected onto a big screen behind them. usually i have to cut down on frames, dimensions, and image quality to meet the requirements of my overlords at tumblr, so this was a cool opportunity to make a giganto animation and save it as a .mp4 so that it could keep all of the nice colors (GIFs are limited to 256 colors, of course). here's a short clip of what it looked like, with one of the members of the band (L'éternèbre) playing in front:

here is the crappy Tumblr version, with the frames reversed for no particular reason:

oh, the full length version's a lot better (about 450 frames across 20 seconds rather than 16 frames across about 2 seconds). when i finish the other 2 for the melbourne thing i'll probably post them on youtube or something!

Karl Malone, Saturday, 12 July 2014 23:06 (nine years ago) link

speaking of, btw if anyone sees this and is going to be in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, directly opposite Stop 37 of the 112 Tram between sunset and sunrise, a few longer-form animation things of mine are going to be screened during a couple weeks in late July as part of the Roundabout Projections public art project. er...assuming i finish two new ones in the next day or so
*gulp*

thanks!

next time we need to fundraise for ILX maintenance someone remind to stop being an asshole and pony up a good amount because i bet this is annoyingly bandwidth heavy :-/

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 September 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

someone remind me to pony up, i meant

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 September 2014 20:29 (nine years ago) link

and this thread, i meant.

i'm sorry, i'm really in no condition to try to make words and communicate

there's a contest that opens on saturday and i want to win one of the prizes (a nice tablet - my current tablet sucks). you can enter multiple submissions, but this is my attempt at the "tired" category

https://38.media.tumblr.com/2c4d8e2ba1950f354c2b1ff5c91cf98f/tumblr_nc4bayv1Le1qdmmiqo3_r1_500.gif

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 September 2014 23:31 (nine years ago) link

since the contest involves a text messaging app, i'm assuming that some of the digital "stickers" will be included in a new emoji-like images competitor for text messaging. i tried to keep things big so that if you reduce it down to a tiny 40x40 emoji size image it might still convey the sense of ZZZzzzz. but all the little noise details will be lost in a tiny version, so i doubt this will do well with the judges. later this weekend i'm going to try to make a new one for a different category and do a better job.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 September 2014 23:34 (nine years ago) link

Ahh that should win. Very nice!
