I feel like "scoops" and speculation about what products could be released is the race to the bottom as far as blog traffic/ad impressions go. It's the most valueless thing, because even if true, it doesn't give any sense of value.

They're not without faults, but I'd rather read a lot more sites like The Verge or in-depth changelogs like the Ars Technica OS X feature rundowns than sit there ping-ponging between tech blogs and nerding out over exactly how many quarter inches the next phone will be.

just follow mark gurman

markers, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

Apple just announced a 7-for-1 stock split. Wow!

Lee626, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 23:02 (nine years ago) link

first in nine years according to someone on twitter (can't remember who)

markers, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

I noticed ios 7.1.1 turns on bluetooth even if you had it turned off before. that might contribute to battery drain.

Dan I., Thursday, 24 April 2014 23:55 (nine years ago) link

Aha! Thanks. That explains a few things about my battery this week. It also turned on "use cellular data for" for every app I own.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Friday, 25 April 2014 00:03 (nine years ago) link

i hope that's a bug because if that's default behavior that's fucked up

markers, Friday, 25 April 2014 00:12 (nine years ago) link

Maybe a bug? I didn't notice it here, but the permanent GPS marker is disconcerting.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 25 April 2014 01:09 (nine years ago) link

I upgraded this morning and bluetooth did not go on.

markers, Monday, 28 April 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

just a spec bump, pff

Nhex, Monday, 28 April 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

24 hour notice is basically "some guy spotted these mid-shipment" or "they are sitting in the back of my Apple store" and not so rumory

a strange man (mh), Monday, 28 April 2014 19:03 (nine years ago) link

i was just alluding to our friend elvis telecom's seeming lack of faith in gurman's reporting

markers, Monday, 28 April 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link

this is like the weakest softball of reporting, so I don't think it's really that good?

a strange man (mh), Monday, 28 April 2014 19:21 (nine years ago) link

"my friend at best buy sent me this picture of a box"

a strange man (mh), Monday, 28 April 2014 19:21 (nine years ago) link

Why would I even have faith in an Apple rumor site to begin with?

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 00:49 (nine years ago) link

because he has good sources

markers, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 00:50 (nine years ago) link

i can't spend time defending this shit tonight, but let's just come back here during wwdc and see if os x gets a massive redesign or not and if it does you can buy me a mac pro all maxxed out

markers, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 00:51 (nine years ago) link

His accuracy is 45%. Let me know when he's better than flipping a coin.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 00:53 (nine years ago) link

TBF, I have the same attitude about all the Apple rumor sites. I've seen enough dubious renderings of "rumored products" from everyone that I can't be bothered.

A redesign of OS X is a safe prediction. Will it be demoed at WWDC? Don't care because I want a new file system instead of more b.s. piled on top of HFS+.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 00:57 (nine years ago) link

I have the impression that HFS+ is seriously locked-in unless there's a really major change needed. They've modified it enough....

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 01:06 (nine years ago) link

Some dick stole my ipad. I replaced it on Wednesday. I noticed today that the glass is cracked in the corner. What the fuck.

well, you got a new lust object, and now you're gonna get yet another
hope you got that applecare+, homie

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 01:23 (nine years ago) link

What are you looking for out of a new FS? Some ZFS-type magic?

Personally I'd love it if Dropbox-type services were standardized and you could easily plug them in at the OS level, but it doesn't seem like that's the direction iCloud is going.

ugh (lukas), Tuesday, 29 April 2014 05:23 (nine years ago) link

I'm not a ZFS-solves-all zealot, but at the very least I want the data/block checksumming and RAID stuff from ZFS as a start.

is that including or excluding "scoops" from other sites that he's reporting on? because i think he addressed a point similar to this one on gruber's podcast.

markers, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 13:17 (nine years ago) link

also, for those on the sidelines, don't listen to our friend here -- gurman's work is worth following.

markers, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 13:18 (nine years ago) link

There's some intriguing speculation that as SSD drives get cheaper and faster it would be possible to further blur and/or reinvent the delineations between RAM and storage.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:31 (nine years ago) link

Hm. As they get cheaper, they generally have a lower number of erase cycles, which means that they would get destroyed pretty quickly if used for RAM. I guess they put a LOT of extra memory in SSDs to cope with cells getting worn out.

schwantz, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link
