BOBBY WOMACK CHINESE SOUL LICKS.

Omg those Joe Perry ones are so shitty-looking.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:56 (nine years ago) link

The one where he's at a board meeting with the corporate suits is so classic for this thread

dollar rave club (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:57 (nine years ago) link

haha, yeah, that is so perfect. good level of "who cares about the cover" vs. "we actually spent a lot of time and money on this cover"

tylerw, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 22:02 (nine years ago) link

When I was in high school, the FM rock station in San Bernardino must have taken a big pile of payola to flog that Corporate Suit Joe Perry album. Heavy rotation for several months. "Let the music do the talking" indeed. The same bag of payola cocaine also paid for several months' heavy rotation of Blue Oyster Cult's Cultösaurus Erectus.

i feel like despite all the titles/covers cited in this thread, we are --at present-- in a golden age of terrible album titles. well, maybe it was more the 2000s.

i mean surely titles like this rule the roost, so to speak

But at least that U2 one is a lyric on the album.

in sum: if your album title is longer than four words you need a REALLY good reason

Nominating this as an early example of the genre:

The u2 & Walkman ones aren't sassy..I feel like sass is the key to this

Not sure that payola ever made it to Perry – he spent some time camped out on my guitar tech's sofa for a while when he was making those records.

I can't find a good picture of it, but there's a Jack Bruce album called I've Always Wanted to Do This with a picture of a woman levitating above a couch

Frank Zappa produced that last Grand Funk album apparently, was wondering where Zappa's album titles fit with this stuff, kind of similar but a slightly different thing?

soref, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:04 (nine years ago) link

good call on zappa, he was in on the ground floor w/r/t titles that make you groan.

^^^ a rarities/b-sides comp, definitely closer to these titles than to, I dunno, the Beastie Boys' Some Old Bullshit.

I must be an idiot but the Aerosmith play on words never occurred to me.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 25 May 2014 04:12 (nine years ago) link

That Lowell George one had been kicking around awhile before it was used--it was a working title for the Sailin' Shoes lp.

Can a mod change Horrible to Awesome in the thread title

okay i stole it

Miles Prower

Had to say it out loud before I got it.

That reminds me of a character from the old Children's Television Workshop show "The Electric Company," a detective specializing in code breaking named Fargo North, Decoder.

Hideous Lump, Sunday, 25 May 2014 17:03 (nine years ago) link

omg, miles prower, you just blew my mind

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 25 May 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

Lowell George: music for Art History majors.

That's So (Eazy), Sunday, 25 May 2014 21:32 (nine years ago) link

Okay, that's just hilarious!

That Joan Baez cover is just insane. It should be the flip picture on Black Sabbath's Never Say Die.

If I seized control of the US government I would force bands like Arcade Fire to do these kind of titles, like the whole band dressed in black and Win Butler dressed all in white, Arcade Fire - "There's One in Every Crowd"
