Nhex, Saturday, 19 April 2014 23:18 (ten years ago) link

yeah although it looks like that article's now disputed perhaps a little bit

markers, Sunday, 20 April 2014 00:37 (nine years ago) link

not the article per se but it's primary assertion

as others have noted, tim cook is on their board

if someone's comp is fucked, it's not terrible advice to send them to the genius bar, right?

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:46 (nine years ago) link

i know that that's what it's there for, but i don't use it because i don't need to. hopefully they're competent

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:47 (nine years ago) link

go when there's not tons of people if you can. but yes, that is where you fix your computers

imo you *should* be using it if you have a laptop and something fucks up because applecare is rad

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:48 (nine years ago) link

i have no idea if he has applecare

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:48 (nine years ago) link

does he need it to use the bar?

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:48 (nine years ago) link

my shit doesn't break! except for my ipods circa 2005/6ish or whatever

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:49 (nine years ago) link

it depends how old the computer is, but outside of applecare they might just charge market rate

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:50 (nine years ago) link

i didn't know that they charged anything! i thought it was free!

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:51 (nine years ago) link

it's a game of numbers, markers. everyone's shit breaks, sometimes.

well, it's more likely to break when your cat likes to fling your iPad off the couch, but you know what I mean.

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:51 (nine years ago) link

are we talking about the same thing? i think there's a possibility he has a software issue

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:51 (nine years ago) link

afaik it's free for minor troubleshooting, and then it goes to warranty, and if you're out of warranty etc

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:52 (nine years ago) link

well, i just told him to show up at the bar. they'll tell him if things veer into $$$ territory before they veer there, right? like, i'm not sending him to get ripped off i hope

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:52 (nine years ago) link

yeah, they will troubleshoot some software issues

oh for sure, they're not going to charge you a cent without authorization

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:53 (nine years ago) link

ok cool

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:53 (nine years ago) link

i told him to ask anyway. thanks dude.

as i've said, my ipods are the only thing i've brought back to the store, minus a battery. they replaced at least one ipod, although i didn't bring that one in.

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:54 (nine years ago) link

(someone else did for me)

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:54 (nine years ago) link

I have nothing but good things to say about applecare+, btw

My entire conversation was "hey, I have applecare+, this iPad is way broken, here's your $50" and they were like "thanks I'll brb with a new one"

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 01:58 (nine years ago) link

wow. i told my parents to get it for their iphones. not sure if i got it for my macbook back in the day.

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:03 (nine years ago) link

i don't think this imac has it.

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:03 (nine years ago) link

the plus version only exists for iPhone/ipad iirc. no accidental damage waivers on the others.

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 02:03 (nine years ago) link

it only lasts three years then it's done, but otherwise it's a good thing and generally worth the money. i know this because a lightning storm fried my HD and I had to get it fixed by a shop, if I had Applecare it would've been a free replacement.

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 03:25 (nine years ago) link

yeah the Genius Bar has always treated me right, and more things than you might expect will fall under a replacement program even if you are out of warranty (assorted non-isolated logic board or display issues, batteries that stop holding a charge too quickly, etc.)

the slow death of America's rich pastoral heritage (silby), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 04:05 (nine years ago) link

For me AppleCare is mandatory. Full stop. When I've had to use it in whatever city I'm I'm in, the Bar (and the whole store) has been unerringly efficient.

BTW, worth noting that earbuds/earpods are covered under AppleCare.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 05:28 (nine years ago) link

usb cables too, which sounds stupid until you see how much they'd charge you for a new one

everyone otm about applecare. If you don't have it though, I feel like the genius bar people have a bit more latitude than online/telephone support to replace bits and pieces out of warranty.

sktsh, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 10:32 (nine years ago) link

FYI iPhone applecare only lasts two years, i.e. warranty year + one more year

, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 10:59 (nine years ago) link

apple is so 80s

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 15:54 (nine years ago) link

Markers are you on 10.9.3

stet, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

no, one previous (.2)

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

why?

markers, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

huh! https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram

sktsh, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:09 (nine years ago) link

lol no thanks

a strange man (mh), Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

So does this mean I don't have to pay the 99 bucks for ADC OSX?

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

I think they give you minor version betas, not major version betas

It'd be worth it if you were really waiting for a fix and it was being tested
