Looks like tour dates, good news that he's finally headlining though.

He was okay at best when opening for Drake (at least when compared to Miguel and the headliner, who just puts on a better show than Future, #honest), so I'm still contemplating whether to see him headline when he comes to town.

hearing "I Won" and the title track is still the only dope track to come outta this so far imo

nova, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 03:27 (ten years ago) link

I think my shipper tendencies for Future/Ciara and Kimye are clouding my judgment because I actually really like this track (and I seem to be the only one).

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 8 April 2014 03:28 (ten years ago) link

The rapping is weak as hell but I'm swooning too hard for it to distract me.

"Sh!t" is aight but yeah, pretty much

some dude, Tuesday, 8 April 2014 03:48 (ten years ago) link

this album is good, definitely feels weirdly minor though

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 April 2014 18:40 (ten years ago) link

weirdly minor compared to where it seemed like he could go with this album like 4 or 5 months ago, not weirdly minor considering everything that has happened w/ the singles since

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 April 2014 19:20 (ten years ago) link

is the Andre 3K verse cool on-and-off beat post-'06 Andre or bad ramble-flow Andre

nova, Thursday, 10 April 2014 20:25 (ten years ago) link

My greatest fear is that this will be Triple F Life pt deux. Could you please kill that thought for me, J0rdan?

longneck, Thursday, 10 April 2014 21:14 (ten years ago) link

no, it's not that

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 April 2014 22:13 (ten years ago) link

my major hold up is that it feels like it could reasonably be a mixtape

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 April 2014 22:14 (ten years ago) link

That actually sounds nice to me, but I like small-picture rap albums. I'm tiring of albums that are big linear narratives (where half the story is told through skits and voiceovers). Just give me some good tracks, as little filler as possible and nothing that pulls me out of the album and I'm totally happy

Evan R, Thursday, 10 April 2014 22:18 (ten years ago) link

that's a strawman, though. only kendrick and YG have really gone for that sort of album.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 April 2014 22:25 (ten years ago) link

recently at least

there are ways to make an artistic "leap" with an album w/o heralding it as some cinematic experience... take care and deeper than rap are good recent examples. even something like tha carter II, as well.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 10 April 2014 22:39 (ten years ago) link

only kendrick and YG have really gone for that sort of album.

I overstated the prevalence of single-narrative albums, but a lot of young rappers are going for this kind of message storytelling on a smaller scale right now. There's a lot of it in most of the recent TDE releases, Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashah, and in Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino and all those guys. Lots of those acts are doing this stuff well, obviously, but right now a lot of acts seem invested in making "important" rap albums when making a really good one is an equally admirable feat imo

Evan R, Thursday, 10 April 2014 23:08 (ten years ago) link

i don't particularly like the schoolboy album to me but i don't see how that one fits in... chance either

i mean they're long and i guess ambitious in a sense but i'd rather that than 12 songs personally

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 11 April 2014 00:31 (ten years ago) link

the andre song is good but... weird. not aesthetically, it just comes from a weird place. andre is good on the hook at least. i'm not sure anyone turned off by his recent verses is gonna find much to turn around on.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 11 April 2014 00:53 (ten years ago) link

yeah I'm having difficulty recalling a verse from him after 2007 that I've dug. Well "Royal Flush" and the C4 interlude were cool actually

nova, Friday, 11 April 2014 00:59 (ten years ago) link

but the good thing is that it doesn't have the feel of ***NEW ANDRE 3000*** verse where he rambles for like 90 seconds straight

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 11 April 2014 01:01 (ten years ago) link

The crux of the Schoolboy album is a two-song message track about drug abuse, "Prescription/Oxymoron," clearly modeled after "Good Kid"/"Maad City." It's like he condensed the Danny Brown album into 7 minutes. Feels like a lot of post-GKMC albums really lean hard on a thesis.

Evan R, Friday, 11 April 2014 02:46 (ten years ago) link

snippets have totally deflated my anticipation for this album. Literally sounds like 2 dope songs on the whole thing, possibly 3 because I can't really tell what the Drake feature's like from the clip. Dude's debut has some stuff that's a step below but I can pretty much play the whole thing bar "Tony Montana"

man

nova, Saturday, 12 April 2014 20:46 (ten years ago) link

i haven't listened to the snippets but i can guarantee you there is more than 2 dope songs

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 12 April 2014 22:54 (ten years ago) link

there's 2 wack songs

le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 12 April 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link

fuck a snippet

lag∞n, Saturday, 12 April 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link

lol may be picky. Initial impression is a bunch of hollow attempted bangers though. My iTunes-sample predicting abilities of whether I'll like the full song are usually pretty accurate, but 1:30's a good amount to go on

other than title track "I Be U" sounds purdy

nova, Saturday, 12 April 2014 23:38 (ten years ago) link

This album is awesome uoeno

Wow this is phenomenal

Evan R, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 15:24 (ten years ago) link

I love ballad-mode Future so much.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 15:25 (ten years ago) link

So "Benz Friends" and "Special" are on the album, just not on this stream, correct? Or did the tracklist get shuffled?

Evan R, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 15:43 (ten years ago) link

it seems like they're on the album but being held back from this stream

posi riot (some dude), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 15:49 (ten years ago) link

help a dummy out: the repeating female vocals in the first track, is that a sample and if so, what is it? or no?

alpine static, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:00 (ten years ago) link

"Never Satisfied:" watch out "Beach Is Better," there's a way doper pointlessly short Mike Will Made-It track in town

nova, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:02 (ten years ago) link

That fade out in "Never Satisfied" has to be stream-only, right? It's so distracting

Evan R, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:07 (ten years ago) link

on the stream they sent me (which had "special" -- which is amazing -- and "benz friends") "never satisfied" also fades out before the 2 min mark

they did play a full version of that track at a listening thing though \(o_O)/

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:13 (ten years ago) link

lol Drake was like "we're cool, you can stay on the tour...i'm not gonna be on the album unless the song is too short to be a single though"

Gah, not knowing what the "right" version of an album is drives me nuts. I always wonder how many album reviews are written around early or incomplete versions of an LP, or leaks with patent flaws or terrible sound or whatever

Evan R, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:18 (ten years ago) link

i feel like that used to happen more often back in the day, stuff like The Source's early review of Nas's I Am, than it does now in the internet era when it's pretty easy to tell if a tracklist hasn't been finalized yet and you don't need a long lead time to get a timely review out there

posi riot (some dude), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:21 (ten years ago) link

I feel like with the Internet what gets reviewed is the first thing that leaks, and often that first leak isn't all that good. A few years ago everybody reviewed a version of Take Care that was missing a song, because that was what they had. Then last year everybody reviewed a version of NWTS with atrocious sound. For a lot of people, critics and listeners, that crappy leak will be their only exposure to that album

Evan R, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:24 (ten years ago) link

thanks J0rdan...

after downgrading my expectations for the past few weeks, i'm digging this p hard

alpine static, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:26 (ten years ago) link

hmmm I listened to that crappy leak of NWTS I think. can't say I'm compelled to revisit though

nova, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:28 (ten years ago) link

i remember American Gangster leaked missing 1 or 2 songs and i wrote a whole article about it based on that and then finally the day of my deadline the last bit of the album surfaced and i was so relieved i could make some small adjustments.

posi riot (some dude), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:31 (ten years ago) link

yeah it was missing "Party Life" AKA the GOAT Jay flow iirc

nova, Tuesday, 15 April 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

lol i haaaaate that song
