this band released an album with a "Magic Eye" cover. basically started chillwave iirc.

I think 'before these crowded streets' is actually one of the better mainstream albums to emerge from that jam band scene, it's just made with such skill and clarity of purpose.

haven't listened to it in ages but i'm pretty sure i'd still like the kronos quartet jam off of 'before these crowded streets,' "the stone"

CONTENTION: Dave Matthews is actually a halfway-decent crooner*—nice warm timbre & natural-sounding phrasing, never pushes his voice too far beyond its range, sticks close to the melody—it's just a shame that his lyrics read like something a music teacher crowd-sourced from first-graders, e.g. "Sweet like candy to my soul / Sweet you rock and... sweet you roll"

* obviously the funky-honky jam-band numbers like "What Would You Say" are another story entirely, and I would rather listen to an entire Blues Traveler album than be subjected to that song's chorus even one more time

also, it's weird (to me) that I never hear "Satellite" anymore—I remember it getting airplay in the 90s, and I've always found it the most listenable song in his catalog (again, ignoring lyrical stinkbombs like "Who's the king of your satellite castle?")

Yeah, Satellite sold me that DMB album. Didn't last long for me, but I love playing along with that guitar part. Regardless, it's still a hell of a lot better than Crash, which I still hear all the time.

loved.

I've never really listened to Incubus (who seem to be popular with the same crowd?) but for some reason always had the impression that their starry-eyed prog-lite stylings could be traced directly back to that guitar part

Yeah, I could hear that.

I love the (3+ minute) coda on #41 through the intro of Say Goodbye.

Many songs would be pretty if on acoustic guitar only with lyrics removed.

Evan, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 19:52 (ten years ago) link

i keep running into abstracts in underground musicology journals that rank dave as a top 5 guitar player using the latest objective forms of chord analysis

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 20:10 (ten years ago) link

The progressions are definitely more interesting and inventive than you'd think from a hated cheesy jam band for northface people

Evan, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link

I read an article recently about a guy who was attempting to use sound wave analysis to determine the best band w/r/t originality, how different they were from other musicians resolved through science. Dave Matthews came out near the top for some reason (above velvet underground!) the piece humorously paraphrased 'ghostbusters' and said nobody ever wrote music like this, Matthews must be an authentic wacko or certified genius.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 20:21 (ten years ago) link

he does seem to construct songs by moving the same finger shapes around on the fret board. they are like the frat boy version of barred chords. you probably do get things that sound weird when you write songs while prioritizing finger shapes over sounds.

i love when he does his funny growly voice.

"hoooowwww youuuuuuaallllgh dooinnggg tonaaaagggggh??"

oh dave, hee!

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 20:50 (ten years ago) link

"Two Step" is a 6.5 minute song, and I'd say at least half of it features Mr. Matthews playing the same dyad over and over again, just daring you to turn it off. If you make it through, Sir Matthews rewards you with "crash into me", an entire 5 minute song of one chord (we get 3 notes in this one, though!).

What if you took this and plucked the guitar part out and had Mark Kozelek singing about crab cakes with a new vocal melody:

90s justice: if someone crashes into you in their car or on a motor bike, you can "come into them" should you desire to do so

Darrell! That's what the true fans call him, because in his Raleigh show in April 2002 he introduced the guest sax player Darrell Pawton, and Pawton said "you should have been a Darrell, Dave", and ever since then all of us on Dancing Nancies call Dave Darrell as an inside joke lol

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:20 (ten years ago) link

somebody call Dave Darrell. we've got a problem, and Dave Darrell is a problem fixer.

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:21 (ten years ago) link

I'm listening to that album he did with the baritone guitar, and it's the only one that doesn't sound like the 90s

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:26 (ten years ago) link

i think it is probably their best album

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:28 (ten years ago) link

sounds kinda like Morphine

I think this is correct. I think they'd be less bad and hated if Everyday was the only album.

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:35 (ten years ago) link

I think. I think about Dave.

how's life, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:51 (ten years ago) link

one of my favorite DMB stories is the Pawtucket show in April 2002. he introduced the guest sax musician Ralph Dharel, and Dharel said "you really should have been a Ralph, Dave", and ever since then all of us on Dancing Nancies call Dave Ralph as an inside joke lol

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

in the song 'satellite,' dave seems to think that satellite television is broadcast via the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. this is incorrect, dave.

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 21:56 (ten years ago) link

we sometimes refer to him as Darrell, as well, in reference to a similar incident that occurred later that month
