he might be cuter now than he was when he sold records

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 19:45 (ten years ago) link

xp okay "Crossfire" blows hard--I don't hear anything close to a hook, the lyrics are distractingly bad, the chorus starts like bad U2 & the piano makes me want to clean Coldplay's clocks

if it were still 2010 & this song were to come on at a place where I was drinking wine with my mom for some reason, she would probably describe it as a 'hot mess' & get angry if I suggested that the singer resembled Springsteen in any way, shape, or form

that being said, if someone can convince me that the song feat. Jenny Lewis is at all sexy, I might give that one a listen

"crossfire" was dope, markers otm

it's so weird when lead singers make solo records that are virtually indistinguishable from the band's sound while the band is still together, though

some dude, Thursday, 27 March 2014 19:57 (ten years ago) link

These lead singers want the satisfaction of paying people to do what you want

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 20:13 (ten years ago) link

On the press run for this record Flowers made it sound like he was all ready to make a new Killers album and the other guys wanted to take a break and be with their families and stuff

some dude, Thursday, 27 March 2014 20:16 (ten years ago) link

is that what "Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts" is about

"Can't Deny My Love" is so good.

Insanely good.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 22:55 (nine years ago) link

Sounds like he really liked the Haim album.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

I posited a bit ago that it sounds like a refugee from the soundtrack of 'The Lost Boys.' Also, he looks like he's doing a Glenn Frey impression on the sleeve art. I give a thumbs up to both of these things.

I could imagine it, which is why I steered clear.

i like this guy. he's handsome and has a workable schtick that transfers to different genres.

80s fetishism has eaten itself, but if that's a bed you want to lie in, how can I deny your love

u have wiked together fiords (imago), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:46 (nine years ago) link

As played out as 80s revivalism is, this feels like one of the first times in a while that I've heard someone bring back the orchestral hit stab.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:07 (nine years ago) link

I think there's plenty of "cool eighties" revivalism/revisionism to go around (some of it good, some of it bad), but few people have brought back "not-cool eighties" styles and done it as great as this song. imago can say whatever, but this is a different kind of thing. Plenty of people have redone New Order. Not many have redone Mr. Mister.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:10 (nine years ago) link

it's too weird for 'whatever' - it's uncool 80s fetishism eating itself, hyperrealised & without sanity - i can understand the love - everything has been thrown in, then some more added just in case

u have wiked together fiords (imago), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:29 (nine years ago) link

I dunno, can one just appreciate the way songs sounded (new-at-the-time technology and production techniques) and were constructed (melodies, swells and flows and cadences) without wishing the world was the same place it was 30 years ago? I think so, because that's me. I don't consider it a fetish. I just consider it one of the ways I like songs to be written and how I like songs to sound. Don't pay attention to dopes in youtube comments who are always saying "music was never as good as it was when I was in high school!" That's bullshit. There always has been and always will be good music. But I think it's a perfectly legitimate practice to pull from one sound of one time to expand on what was added to music in general when that style was brand new. Nobody bags on jazz dudes or composers who do this. People only have a problem when it's framed inside pop music.

^^ Nice post, JF.

this song (and the whole new album) is produced by ariel rechtshaid so yeah Kitchen Person is otm about the haim sound

i like this a fair bit though, surprised it isn't getting more hype

nose, Friday, 27 March 2015 16:17 (nine years ago) link

He spent a year recording the album in Vegas and L.A. with producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim, Vampire Weekend). They ended up calling in guest appearances from Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant and Haim's Danielle Haim, as well as session hands including Joey Waronker, Kenny Aronoff and Bruce Hornsby, who plays on two tracks. "Nobody plays piano like him," Flowers says of Hornsby. "There's a particular emotion that he conjures up, which I associate with being a teenager."

Another song samples U.K. synth-pop act Bronski Beat's 1984 hit "Smalltown Boy." Flowers' favorite tune at the moment is the dramatic "Still Want You." "It's fun," he says. "The chorus goes, 'Crime is on the rise, I still want you/Climate change is dead, I still want you/Nuclear distress, I still want you/Earth is heating up, I still want you/Hurricanes and floods, I still want you. . .' I love that chorus."

That's Liv from The Vampire Diaries!

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Monday, 27 April 2015 18:52 (nine years ago) link

Also, "Still Want You" is great, roughly equal to the new song for me, though not as good as CDML obv

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Monday, 27 April 2015 19:00 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I still prefer CDML, but this one is quite nice. Love the horns.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 27 April 2015 19:11 (nine years ago) link

I want a "Lonely Town" cassingle now.

Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Monday, 27 April 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link

On first listen, more mid-tempo Brandon Flowers/Killers stuff isn't very promising. The use of the word "Gravitron" over and over again is the best part. He should make an album about county fairs. That seems like something he would be good at. I would enjoy that very much.

brontosaur, Monday, 27 April 2015 22:11 (nine years ago) link

really rocking that bronski beat sample

"Smalltown Boy" sample!
