Name: JBR

Location: NYC

Age: 26

Fav Band: Gah, "band" is so rockist. Suffice to say, I like postwar pop and R&B singles, "jammin' oldies" (disco/soul/house, esp. with shouty girl singers), punk-wave-powerpop-indie, mopey British nonsense, the piano as a rock instrument, experimental whatsis (turntables, tape loops, and all those crackpot Germans you read about), 20th c. classical, '60s British folk-rock, easy-listening & other AM-radio detritus, '70s Brazilian samba-funk, choral masses, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, various singers and songwriters.

Fav Movie: Woody Allen's Love and Death

Fav TV Show: those horrible dating shows

Fav Book: There were five books I read as a kid that made me really interested in music -- the 1979 Rolling Stone Record Guide; Joel Whitburn's Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (1987); a British coffeetable book from the early '80s (can't remember the name) that had short articles and pictorials about rock bands like the Jam and Duran Duran; History of American Bandstand: It's Got a Great Beat and You Can Dance to It (1987); and a book about NYC hip-hop/breakdance/graffiti culture. For better or worse, these books helped turn me into the obsessive weirdo I am today, so they take precedence on the pecking order.

David R. - I've both "Infinite Jest" and "The Intuitionist" on my shelves - which is the better/easier escapism? (I need to take one on the road with me - the other books have already been selected.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Since you're going on the road, I'd choose The Intuitionist, simply for weight & size reasons. Both are great, but IJ can get a little cumbersome with its 400+ pages of footnotes. IJ is a book that you nurse on your bedside bureau over the course of a couple of weeks; The Intuitionist is more user-friendly. Go w/ the elevator inspectors, madam.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 February 2003 08:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I kinda don't want to do the fill-in-the-blanks survey because, well, I think it's more interesting when people write in sentences, and anyway there are way too many categories where I don't really have an interesting answer.

Not that I am suggesting that this is going to be an interesting post.

But I already posted something not long ago in an "Introduce Yourself" thread (although, sure, that was before taking part in an explosive thread and working my way onto the top 50 users list) (ha! I'm exactly tied with Oops right now! But this post will push me over him... for now...).

So.

That, right there, that is me in a nutshell.

Or, in another nutshell: I'm 27, male, and I live in Portland, Ore., though like everyone else I used to live in Astoria, NY (1997-9, Grand Central Parkway and 36th). I, like, I'm in this band, and I'm in this other band, and I help organize this avant-garde poetry reading series, and I've edited this webzine for a few years, and I have this cat, and this job at an environmental advocacy group, and I do some web design, and I do all this other stuff, and so I keep busy. Which is weird, since I don't think of myself as a busy guy. I mean, I seem to spend most of my day goofing off on the Internet, so am I really that busy? I dunno. It would explain why I'm so frickin' tired all the time. Also I am single and something of a homebody and I live in a house where we aim to have books in every room (we are almost there) and I've got two turntables and two microphones so clearly, clearly I am doing pretty well in that department.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 14 February 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Eyes: Dark brown

Sex: Male / regular

Location: Dawlish / Exeter, Devon, South West England

Fav TV Show: The Simpsons is about the only thing I watch with anything approaching regularity.

Fav Book: The Subtle Knife! For the next 113 pages, anyway.

Fav Actor: I have no favourite actor - I like films. It's kind of like asking me what my favoruite musical instrument is - I like music, as soon as I mention one, another comes to mind, and then another, and then their bad points, and so on and so on... It is not the individual components that matter, but the whole product.

Fav Food: And again. I like food. I really like food. Chocolate. Cheese. Toast. Bacon. Potatos. Eggs. Ice cream. Brownies. I could go on and on and on and on...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 14 February 2003 09:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sure. I'm part of a collective of about seven people called Spare Room who organize a reading more-or-less monthly series here in Portland. We focus on "avant-garde" or "post-avant" or "experimental" or something -- we haven't quite figured out the right adjective to put there, and don't really want to be forced to. Generally, we're interested in writers who are at least familiar with, say, the New York schools, the Black Mtn poets, the Language folks, the whatever-the-hell-you'd-call-Jackson Mac Low folks, and the sound/visual poets. So next week we've got a sound poetry extravaganza, with 12 Pacific NW poets coming into town and a bank of cell phones set up so sound poets throughout the world can call in at a particular point. It should be interesting. We also organize an annual hunger benefit marathon reading. Mostly we do these monthly readings that usually feature a visiting poet and a local poet (for instance, we've had Chris Stroffolino and Charles Borkhuis read, as well as locals such as Cynthia Kimball).

I would send you to the website but it's a bit threadbare and out of date (all my own damn fault)...

Thanks David, The Intuitionist it is. Have you read um, John Henry Days? (Sorry, it's late and I was drawing a severe blank, but I figured that if I kept typing it would come to mind.)

I'd no idea about IJ - someone sent it to me as a gift and it's sitting right next to "Mason & Dixon" and "The Recognitions" and "JR" and "Underworld", to name a few on my "unread as yet" shelfs - and it just looks so darn heavy! (Physically and mentally, I mean.)

I'm taking with me, in addition to The Intuitionist, a book on the Soviet Manned space program, a history of the word "Fuck," and something by Mahfouz, I think. And, just maybe, a book of interviews with Palestinians and Israelis about the current (well, semi-current, now) situation in that region. I need something cheery to read.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 14 February 2003 09:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

For whatever it's worth, I never got into Infinite Jest. I found a lot of it painfully unfunny. After a few hundred pages I gave up.

After that I read a lot of DFW's other work and enjoyed most of it.

(Similarly, I enjoyed Mason & Dixon until they actually started, you know, surveying the Mason-Dixon line. Then it suddenly got bland for me. But it is a wonderful book to have on your shelf, especially if it's the hardcover: It's a gorgeous object!)

John Henry Days is sitting on my bookshelf, sandwiched by a good number of books I've bought & haven't read. I'm still working up the courage to try & read a non-school, non-comic book for the pure purpose of leisure. (Poetry collections don't count, of course, because there's no need to commit.) I've heard mixed things about JHD, actually, but given how great The Intuitionist is, I'm not worried.

I don't live in Puntey, either. And I proof read the bloody thing three times! I live in Putney, it's very nice.

I also forgot in the TV column any historical documentary with Adam Hart-Davis. He's so cuddly!

I'm sure I've done this before too, but here goes

Also, I'm another person who doesn't like fill-in-the-blanks surveys. My name is Caitlin, although that's not what it says on my birth certificate or my passport. I'm 25, I'm English but I've lived in Edinburgh since I was 18. My taste in anything - music, books, films, art, whatever - tends to be pretty eclectic, so whenever anyone asks: "Who's you favourite [blah]", I go a bit blank. I'm a computer geek - well, a geek generally - and I first found ILX via Sinister.

If you want to know anything else about me, go here.
