three weeks pass...

watched the pilot episode of Lucky Louie last night. weird sitcom format. also noticed that he's had that matriarchy/first guy to punch his mom bit that he did on SNL last week for quite some time.

Louis C.K. ‏@louisck 14m

I took a year off between last season and this one, mostly so I could have more time to do the show, to make it better. This season is very different from past seasons. The first three episodes are pretty typical of what we've done in the past, Self-contained stories. But the next 6 episodes after that are all connected in one story. Then we have a three part story and a two part story. So lots of… parts stories. Yeah.

I am pretty excited!

haha 'parts stories'

like 'chapter books'

the scene with the garbage men really fuckin' nailed it, that was every Tuesday at my last apartment

frogbs, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 04:47 (nine years ago) link

I admit that if I was gonna guess this season's guest stars, Charles Grodin and Yvonne Strahovski would not have been my first picks.

had a nightmare about paying a rich man 5k a month for the rest of my life. maybe not quite that detailed but that was certainly the gist.
louis is good at hitting those terror spots; the doughnut store bully still engages fight/flight when i watch it.

Is it too much to hope that Louis develops a blood condition sometime over this season? Because GRODIN

maura, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 15:36 (nine years ago) link

First two were a'ight with some good moments, felt like first gear Louie though

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 May 2014 15:44 (nine years ago) link

Points for wringing some near pathos from Jim Norton's masturbation habits.

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 May 2014 15:45 (nine years ago) link

that's sort of the thing with this show, every time the episode ends I usually think "was that it?" because they go by so quickly and don't usually contain a lot of plot. I did like some of the touches in this one...at the cafe with Tom Papa with all the zombie-like teenagers on their phones in the background - it would seem very cliche and kinda dumb if he focused on it more, but as a background detail it was neat.

frogbs, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 15:51 (nine years ago) link

That was Todd Barry

dan selzer, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 17:23 (nine years ago) link

correction. I always confuse those two.

i don't know, maybe he's setting us up for a great multi-episode run, but this show hasn't done it for me since the 1st season...he took two years(?) off to work on the show and those first two episodes were the result?

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:07 (nine years ago) link

i thought he took time off to not work on the show.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:10 (nine years ago) link

I thought I remembered him saying he wasn't thrilled with the last season, that he was going too fast and wanted to take a lot of time to rejigger the show

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:13 (nine years ago) link

If the 2nd season didn't do it for you it's probably not gonna work at all going forward.

Simon H., Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:14 (nine years ago) link

I can't recall which epsiodes were in which season, but it's all been of a consistently high quality as far as I'm concerned.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

the 3 "Late Show" eps were my favorites yet

frogbs, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link

first ep was p great, second one w the rich model sort of petered out

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I feel like the same types of gags are circulating over and over--quirky weird authority figure (Lynch/Grodin), sluts-and-nuts scoring-above-my-level, etc....

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:33 (nine years ago) link

I felt that way about the rich model storyline as it was unfolding, but the resolution and scene with the lawyer were pretty hilarious. Loved Seinfeld being an utter dick to Louie as well.

Has he been in it before? Can't remember.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:47 (nine years ago) link

yeah. Seinfeld was p great

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

Yeah not a ton of laughs in these first two. Scenes with the kids are great (loved the "carry my backpack" bit), but the manic pixie model stuff was kinda pointless, and not really funny. Maybe he should REALLY embrace the zero continuity aspect of the show and destroy his life in a different way for each episode...

schwantz, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

he should die at the end of every episode

/become destitute/end up in a Turkish prison etc. etc.

i love how rather than getting up in arms about it, louis kindly helped to herd the teenager absorbed in his cell phone around his chair so he would not hurt himself. it's like he takes their zombie-ness as a given, and just works with it.

This last one, ep 2 The Benefit, is some masterful shit. I loved the ending.

calstars, Friday, 9 May 2014 03:03 (nine years ago) link

idk I was bored as shit by that episode

UUUGHHNNN this show is so fucking good

schlump, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:14 (nine years ago) link

Did not like the rich model episode. Have not seen the "fat girl" one that Lefsetz is raving about as being brilliant, in his email/blog thing.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:17 (nine years ago) link

"fat girl" one is less than brilliant but its good, the diffused end particularly

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:20 (nine years ago) link

Opinion seems to be split on last night's. Some people are all "yes, Louie, yes!" and others are all "thanks, white MAN for hijacking a woman's platform you jerkface!"

I haven't watched it, but I already know both sides have a point.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

i didn't like that one mostly b/c i don't like when louis works in character monologues to get across a moral/ideological/cultural point. it always feels super clumsy to me whether or not i agree with the content.

Clay, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

Like to think Louie was throwing some material out to give the thinkpieceratti something to do before season finales started coming thick and fast.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 23:46 (nine years ago) link

thought the second elevator episode was more entertaining actually. was the russian girl from Stranger Than Paradise?

Darin, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 05:39 (nine years ago) link

oh wow!, it was

schlump, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 14:19 (nine years ago) link

liked both of these. Vanessa's extended rant/monologue was good and definitely novel otoh it seemed to go on forever. Elevator bit was great. Subway bit was also great. That was yet another actress as his ex-wife right? Funny that he's carrying on the (unacknowledged) interracial conceit. Would be funny if he brought back Vanessa for another episode but had her played by a skinny actress.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

It was the same actress...

Number None, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:31 (nine years ago) link

huh for some reason I thought someone else played her in that episode where he went to Miami

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 14 May 2014 16:33 (nine years ago) link

didn't enjoy being lectured by a fat chick

calstars, Thursday, 15 May 2014 00:23 (nine years ago) link

i think several women have played his ex-wife (over the course of the whole show) but the same woman has been playing her for a while.

espring (amateurist), Thursday, 15 May 2014 00:29 (nine years ago) link

naw

schlump, Thursday, 15 May 2014 00:34 (nine years ago) link

Am I missing out on something here? or are you just a pathetic little prick?
