The new one is actually their fourth album. I never heard the first one but I liked Nights Out and The English Riviera. They used to be a trio and then added a drummer before the 3rd one.

Oh right, I'd forgotten a bunch of the songs I liked were collected on Nights Out. Don't think of it as an album, so I blanked on it.

Wiki tells me it was the bassist who left (to pursue his side project Your Twenties, which iirc never lasted beyond two singles). Losing one member and adding two between Nights Out and English Riviera did something to the chemistry and approach, though, and nu-Metronomy isn't for me.

I'm hearing a lot of Squeeze/XTC on this one.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Monday, 10 March 2014 11:48 (ten years ago) link

"Love Letters" is one of the singles of the year for me, an earworm for sure. And I like the sparseness, too.

Casual fan of the last album, particularly its singles. Gave the new one a go over the weekend and it seemed dull.

I tried so hard to like The English Riviera, but I couldn't get into it. There are a few tunes on there that are nice.

However, I quite like the new album.

There's a strong Scary Monsters vibe to the new record, and it comes in at a tight 40 minutes or so.

Like it but slightly prefer the Fatima Yamaha remix of 'Old Skool' to the original, likewise the Cassius remix of '16 Beat'.

for years i tried on and off to penetrate this album but it's only last year that it took hold, and christ did it take hold. 'corinne' has been on repeat for the past hour.

I dismissed this band completely when they appeared on the scene but having just discovered English Riviera, I gotta say its really a timeless classic. So different from everything that's out there

So ten years after starting this thread, I finally went to see them last night (in Brixton). I don't know anything off the most recent album and only downloaded two tracks off the one before (The Most Immaculate Haircut and Never In A Month Of Sundays) (those might not be the names, but something like that) and they played very little of the earlier stuff so I had no idea what I was listening to most of the time.

Still don’t get why ILM doesn’t care about these guys. They’re pretty big in France
