Is "All Eternals Deck" anyone else's favorite MG record?

― Treeship

The best of the recent lot

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 March 2014 03:31 (ten years ago) link

If "the recent lot" is, say, Heretic Pride onward, it's my second fave. "Harlem Roulette" and "Cry for Judas" nudge Transcendental Youth just a tad ahead of it, for me.

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 4 March 2014 03:34 (ten years ago) link

As for the novel, of course I'm pumped (very little recent literary fiction I've encountered matches his Master of Reality volume), but a fall release all but guarantees that I probably won't get around to reading it til around Summer 2015, at the earliest.

I'm one.of the.old.like their old stuff.better people so it would be Full Force Galesborg or Sweden easy. I know that J.Darinelle would vehemently disagree but I just don't get that same sense of bleeding brilliance from.any of the modern productions. Despite there.being a tonne of.great songs scattered about the more pristine recent lot.

Hinklepicker, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 03:39 (ten years ago) link

I think both production approaches have their drawbacks and virtues but I don't think his songwriting's ever declined.

Treeship, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 03:50 (ten years ago) link

first track on sweden is breathtaking.

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 03:59 (ten years ago) link

I was happy to hear Mountain Goats on the Walking Dead, it took a second to click. But I'm sort of with hinkle, Zopilote Machine, The Hound Chronicles, Sweden, Hot Garden Stomp, those tapes and cds were the soundtrack to my high school days. I've only heard a few scattered songs after Nothing For Juice, I should check out his newer hi-fi records?

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 04:08 (ten years ago) link

Yes, absolutely, but don't miss the later lo-fi ones while you're at it (All Hail West Texas especially).

cwkiii, Tuesday, 4 March 2014 04:17 (ten years ago) link

The life of the world to come resonates most strongly with me. Had a long drive up the California coast with that one.

Am a little surprised, given the novel's description, that it's apparently only 200 pages. Looking forward to reading it, in any case.

I like All Eternals Deck a lot, but then I would

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Tuesday, 4 March 2014 04:33 (ten years ago) link

"all hail west texas" is probably my favorite of the lofi albums. i really don't prefer the very earliest material but i barely ever do with any artist.

I can't really deal with this show, but my wife and son watch it every week. I was downstairs folding laundry and they were upstairs jamming (albeit unknowingly) to the Mountain Goats?

what happened to your wife that caused her to be unable to recognize mountain goats songs?

We don't share musical tastes.

What MG song was on The Walking Dead?

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 4 March 2014 14:38 (ten years ago) link

i think the sunset tree will always be my favorite, and that's no disrespect to any of the records that came before or after

but it feels intensely felt in a way, obviously because of the subject matter, cannot be repeated

I have written an "every Mountain Goats song, ranked" listicle, John'd better behave or I will submit that listicle

Dear Mr. Tyler,
How did you end up with a track on the CD accompanying this? http://southerncultures.org/2013/02/15/spring-2013-issue-global-southern-music/
I couldn't figure out at all which article it tied into,

Regards,

this really isn't the place for this but when there're anthology CDs the process usually involves magazines writing to managers/publicists and artists signing off for zero dollars on the idea that being on something that might reach new ears is a good idea as long as the venue seems kinda cool and not something weird like a McDonalds giveaway or whatever

so I always found the title of "Up the Wolves" off The Sunset Tree to be kinda mystifying much moreso than the actual lyrical content), and then just now I made the connection with this

... which seems like a plausible source, but idk

it is possible that in this one instance I have overestimated the influence of Mr. Ronnie James Dio

I ordered a copy, because Mr. Goat is awesome and the book seems cool.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 September 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

Mr. Goat is doing a signing near here (Oxford, MS) so I will go buy my copy there and say hi dere.

I fear I'll need to miss the LA signing, so I've preordered and wait with bated breath.
