technically it's a sippy cup, not a baby's bottle. I don't really know what else to say.

...how do you define what 'looks like hateful iconography'? besides, a bottle-opener has to be shaped a certain way for it to function as a bottle-opener.

Fine. But I'm not trying to define the best way to make a fucking bottle-opener. I'm explaining why one image seems distasteful while another is not. Yes, you actually have to think harder than: "b-b-b-but this caricature of a black person has big teeth too!" Just some awareness of--some openness to the effects of--history, even if it's (God forbid) someone else's history, is required.

(WHITE) BRITISHERS PURCHASING BOTTLE-OPENING CARICATURE KNICK-KNACKS

How do you know it was purchased by white Britishers? It could be another Brazilian-made piece of iconic memorabilia for all we know.

or...on the other hand...are the brits trying to defend their original position, rather than their considered opinion

My considered opinion was what I posted in response to Nabisco (albeit 2342423 xposts later). I can see why people would make the connection to the offensive images that and what has kindly posted from his collection but I questioned that there was ever any intent to offend in that way. I also accept that lack of intention doesn't = lack of offense.

I reserve the right to laugh at Ronaldinho if I like and if anyone thinks that makes me racist they can kiss my black balls.

onimo, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

dude, Brazilians can be racist, too! this isn't about laying blame, its just about calling it like it is!

horseshoe, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

What more IS there to say???

You can't see it in the photo but the slogan on the sides translates as 'once you've had black you'll never go back'.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

now, if that was specifically modelled on the penis of a black man famous throught the world for having a big cock and marketed as such, i wouldn't consider it racist. just really, really inappropriate.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

do you remember the 'boy' thread? where a british black kid was called boy, and there was cultural gulf over whether that was racist. i thought that was culturally imperialistic, to apply US standards to a non-US country, where to use that phrasing in britain isn't racist.

can we argue that the same is true of the ronaldinho figure? given the past history is gollywogs etc, im much less inclined to get behind that position, than i would be over the term 'boy'

or in other words, is the imagery and iconography of such figures a US thing, or are the racist caricatures commonplace in british history also? given the gollywogs, they probably are?

600, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

louis can i ask you what the fuck difference would it make if the thing was made in brazil? newsflash: BRAZIL, TOO, IS A MULTIRACIAL COUNTRY. "BRAZILIAN" IS NOT A RACE.

(Apparently)

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think racist iconography belongs to any one nation, no.

horseshoe, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Gareth you could argue that Gollywogs and similar imagery have been pretty much stamped out in this country. Do you see them anywhere any more? Do you still see the equivalent images much in the US?

Obviously I'm not saying the US is de facto more racist than the UK, but perhaps that UK racism manifests itself in different ways so that images like this don't seem quite as potent?

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

or in other words, is the imagery and iconography of such figures a US thing, or are the racist caricatures commonplace in british history also? given the gollywogs, they probably are?

Known in the UK, but not commonplace enough for it to be the first thing Britons think of, hence this thread.

caek, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

look, I'll ACCEPT that you can see the bottle-opener as being SIMILAR to racist caricature, but my point is that it was clearly not DESIGNED to act as such. you've made me (along with a bit of help from myself in unsuccessfully trying to express my views clearly) seem like a complete tit on a thread which ought to have been of little consequence. and now i'm feeling the shame. it fucking stings.

agreed. you could make the argument that britain is more racist because it hasnt worked through issues and is still insensitive to them, you could make thte argument it is less racist because it has forgotten about them

im sure both positions are right, in different ways, to different people

How do you know they weren't?

nickalicious, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i think there is a point that the imagery that this is compared to is american imagery, and many of these things are compared to US history that isnt necessarily taught in other countries, ie many people may be unaware of such things. the gollywogs make this argument more difficult, though i think many young people are now unaware that gollywogs ever existed, seeing as how british cultural memory is about 15 minutes long

i was talking to a south african guy the other day, he didnt know the US had had a civil war.

"worked through issues" is probably better wording than "come on enough".

Although I do bathe in warm Manchester United jism every second Tuesday.
